A proverb a day to brighten the day!

386a. Es ist besser, allein zu sein als mit schlechten Gefährten.
386b. It is better to be alone than with bad companions.

"Show your friends to me and I can say everything about you!"
Sounds scary? But it is true!

The people who we associate with are either like us or are liked by us.
Remember the saying,"Birds of a feather flock together"?

The wrong type of friends can corrupt and change
a good person to become wicked like himself.

footnotes:-
Es = It
ist = is
besser = better
zu = to
sein = be

allein = alone
als = than
mit = with
schlechten = bad
Gefährten = companions

387a. Die unbenutzte Waffe wird rostig. Das unbenutzte Gehirn wird stumpf.

387b. The unused weapon becomes rusty. The unused brain becomes blunt.

We lose what we don't use.
We develop what we use!

When we use something it gets worn out.
When we don't use something they get rusted or become blunt

388a. Können wir Eier an eine Henne verkaufen?
388b. Can we sell eggs to a hen?

Some sales persons can be called as 'vidaak kaNdan!'
They won't take 'no' for an answer!
They will keep trying to sell the eggs to a hen.

footnotes:
Können = Can
wir = we
verkaufen = sell
Eier = eggs
an eine Henne = to a hen?

The Art of Belittlement!

Why do I call the unpleasant belittlement as an Art?
It is complex and pervades everywhere like Lord VishNu!

Some people have this natural ability inherently.
Others develop it to prove their imaginary superiority over the others.

The two main ways are not to recognize the achievements of a person
and not reacting to the hardships suffered by a person.

It does not matter to them. Nothing matters to them!
In German it is said thus: "Es ist mir egal!" [ = I don't care!]

Out of curiosity I looked up that word and found a treasure cove of 78 words related to this Art of Belittlement. Enjoy the following article and those words.

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

389a. Kind ist der Vater des Menschen
389b. Child is the father of man.

Man is the father of the child.
But the reverse is also true!

Child is the father of Man.
Child exhibits what kind of a man it will become when it grows up.

footnotes:
Kind = Child
ist = is
der = the
Vater = father
des Menschen = of the man

391a. Grabe dein eigenes Grab nicht mit deinem eigenen Löffel und deiner eigenen Gabel.
391b. Don't dig your own grave with your own spoon and your own fork.

In fact, there are now almost two-and-a-half times as many overweight and obese people on the planet as there are undernourished. And more people die from eating too much than from not eating enough.

footnotes:-
Grabe nicht = Don't dig
dein = your
eigenes = own
Grab = grave
mit = with
deinem = your
eigenen = own
Löffel = spoon

392a. Vergessen Sie nicht die vergangenen Erfahrungen. Sie werden Sie in Zukunft führen.
392b. Don't forget the past experiences. They will guide you in the future.

Why does History repeat itself?
Does History go in circles???

No! We forget the past history and
the valuable lessons it has taught us.

:
Sie = You
Vergessen nicht = don't forget
die = the
vergangenen = past
Erfahrungen = experiences.

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

393a.
In der Jugend ist das Fehlen von Vergnügen Schmerz.
Im Alter ist Schmerzfreiheit ein Vergnügen

393b.
In youth, absence of pleasure is pain.
In old age absence of pain is pleasure

In life everything is relative and nothing is absolute.
We always compare what we have with what we want to have.
That makes our life sweet or sorrowful, happy or sad, pretty or ugly!

footnotes:
In der Jugend = In youth
das Fehlen = the absence
von = of
Vergnügen = pleasure
ist = is

A proverb a day to brighten the day!

394a. Der bekannte Feind ist besser als der unbekannte Freund.
394b. The known enemy is better than the unknown friend.

We will be on the watch out in our dealings (if any) with the known enemy.
But with people who we believe to be friends, we may not be very cautious.
If they happen to be false friends or selfish friends we will be in trouble.

footnotes:
Der = The
bekannte = known
Feind = enemy
ist = is
besser = better
als = than
der = the
unbekannte = unknown
Freund = friend

395a. Ein geschlossener Mund sammelt keine Fliegen.
395b. A closed mouth gathers no flies.

Mouth can be Man's best friend OR Man's worst enemy.

Man suffers when he speaks out words which he should not have.
Man suffers when he eats random things which he should not have.

As they say in Telugu
"mee nOru manchidhAyithe ee ooru kooda manchidhE"
[ If your mouth is good, then this place is also good ]

footnotes:
Ein = A
geschlossener = closed
Mund = mouth
sammelt = gathers
keine = no
Fliegen = flies

I get to read some funny episodes and stories in my German lessons in Duo Lingo.

I am planning to post some of them here - trimmed and condensed to the minimum.

#1. Who was she?

Max returns home from his school by his school bus. A cute little girl comes, sits by his side and starts talking to him. Her name is Sissy and she seems to know everything about Max....his favorite color, his favorite food, his favorite movie, his favorite book and his favorite place.

She also knows everything about his mother, his dog and his home. Max keeps asking her how she can know so much about him while he himself knows nothing about her.

The little girls smiles and says it is rather difficult to explain. She tells him it is time to get down from the bus since his mother is waiting for him.

Max tells her mother about the little girl and wonders how strange everything seems to be. Max's mother reveals a secret which he has long since forgotten. Sissy is the name of the imaginary friend he used to have - when he was very young.

Small wonder Sissy seems to know everything about him! :)

As always this facility to upload is misused by some attention seekers.

I was shocked to see a 'classical dance' by someone
who resembled more closely a hippo than a woman.

To be body positive is one thing but to make oneself a laughing stock is quite another!
Five digit subscribers to see this kind of dance by such types of persons!

Reminds me of the popular saying
"One will find more people around a mad man than around a wise man"

God Save Us! 🙏

#2. The clever grandma

A grandma gets stopped by the traffic police for driving too fast. The police officer is a very strict man. He has to give her a ticket. He also learns that she has got four tickets for over speeding already. So now he will have to arrest her.

He demands see her driving license. The grandma hands over her license. Then she starts to admire his stylish uniform, instead of worrying about her over speeding. She shows him the photo of her grand kids and asks about his family.

The police officer melts down without realizing it. He shows her the photo of his kids. There is a lot of mutual admiration going on between the officer and the old lady.

Now the police officer can't bring himself to write to this lovely and friendly old lady a ticket or arrest her. He gives a stern warning and she promises him never to cross the speed limit in the future.

Only after she speeds away does the police officer realize how he has been taken for a ride by the clever old grandma! Obviously 'The fox-and-the-crow-technique' never fails! :)

But this NOT the end of the story. The same old clever grandma will almost become the soft target of a swindler later on!

397a. Ein Hahn ist tapfer in seinem eigenen Misthaufen
397b. A cock is valiant in his own dunghill

Everybody is a hero in his own territory - like every king in his own country.
The term 'pEttai rowdy' is proof for this statement.:)
The rowdy rules over his 'pEttai' but is powerless beyond that.

Every animal guards its own territory zealously.
The animals have various means of marking their territory.

footnotes:
Ein = A
Hahn = rooster
ist = is
tapfer = valiant
in = in
seinem = his / its
eigenen = own
Misthaufen = dunghill
