In the ancient days everyone went about armed for self protection as well attacking their enemies.

So to assure that he would not attack the other person, each of them held his hat in his hand and

greeted the other. Well! You ca't hold an elaborate hat and wield an arm at the same time... can you?

Later carrying swords went out of fashion and smaller guns came into play. An expert can draw and

fire with the speed of lightning. So they had to hold the hand of each other hand to make sure the

lightning attack does not happen. This lead to the habit of shaking hands.

Now the hand holding serves more than just self protection! It aims at protection the busty wife from

the rusty grasp of the lusty and nasty men.

There is no assurance that he-whom-you-may-know-very-well

WILL NOT grab that-which-you-love-and-cherish-most!
