Think or sink!

A tiny lab under your skin!

Tiny blood-monitoring implant calls smartphone before heart attack

You may have received hundreds of important calls, but one of the most unique and urgent calls a person might receive could come from a tiny blood-monitoring implant to alert you that you are about to have a heart attack.

A team of Swiss scientists at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) developed the world’s smallest medical implant, 14mm by 2mm, to measure critical chemicals in the blood,
reported ExtremeTech.

This “
tiny lab on a chip” is implanted under the skin and uses Bluetooth to transmit the data to a mobile device. The wireless impant is powered by a skin patch, which is about the size of a credit card.

The implant tracks five substances in the blood, such as
troponin that the heart produces hours before a heart attack. The researchers have tested the tiny implant on lab animals, but hope to begin testing on intensive care patients soon. They expect this implantable device to be ready for the commercial market in about four years.

Focusing on the potential of these developments is exciting, but focusing on the potential hacks to such devices would be scary. Let's hope that the researchers build-in security and privacy, such as in the embedded medical device, instead of trying to bolt it on afterwards.

The bearded boys will become happy.

The hair transplanting doctor will be happy - raking easy money.

But the happiest will be the head lice which will get

an additional ground to play on - just by crossing

the face along the ears - in the short cut - as the crow flies!

Some Research Data

A number of studies have shown that stethoscope can be a leading cause of spreading infection. Here are some of the findings

arrows.gif
90% of all Stethoscopes today are contaminated with some form of microorganism. The demanding and fast paced clinical setting does not always afford caregivers the ability to properly clean the stethoscope by traditional means between patients.

arrows.gif
It has been documented that only 32% of healthcare workers clean their stethoscope regularly.

arrows.gif
One study revealed that 234 of 355 stethoscopes carried at least two different types of bacteria, and 31 carried potentially pathogenic bacteria.

One study showed the following in regard to the contamination of the stethoscope:

• 90% of physicians’ stethoscopes were contaminated
• 79% of nurses’ stethoscopes were contaminated
• 67% of medical school students stethoscopes were contaminated
• 83% of respiratory therapists’ stethoscopes were contaminated
• 100% of physical therapists’ stethoscopes were contaminated

It is NOT just stethoscope that can spread infection.

During those four days i spent in a hospital in December, four young nurses would come in a group.

One would put the oxymeter in one of my middle fingers. The other will draw blood for the strip test

for blood sugar from the other middle finger.

A third one will put the digital thermometer in my armpit and

the fourth will juggle to measure the blood pressure.

NOTHING was cleaned in between uses on different patients.

If one of the patients was suffering from some kind of skin infection in his arm pit area,

it was guaranteed that every other in-patient at that time will get it.

The digital thermometer had weird smell like the sweat of men traveling in the bus

wearing the same unwashed shirts over many days.

If we come out without catching more infections... we are really very lucky!
