My father used to say often that a busy and well respected executive - at whose sight everyone else shudders - would be as mild as a lamb in his home and let his wife dominate and dictate to him.
On the other hand the man doing the meanest job in an office will give a hard time to his wife - just to get the anger out of his system and prove to be a terror to her.

Dear VR ji,

This post of yours and the word Snub nose suddenly made me wonder!

The controversial usage of the word Anasa meaning snubnose in the Rigveda had sparks controversy that it describes Aryans describing the Dasyus(Non Aryan) who appeared snub nose.

Now suddenly a thought came to me...was that word Anasa actually used to describe a particular race or it was used to describe the evolution features of men??

Cos you see the Neardenthal man was snubbed nose as you have correctly described..and as man evolved his features and skull shaped changed and the nose became a bit more prominent and well defined as in modern man.

Dasyus mean Slave...the Neardenthal man was a "slave" to his instincts cos he had to be fully dependent on the senses to learn by trial and error... and he can be described as yet to acquire knowledge hence called "dark"..dark about knowledge..Dasyus were also called Apada footless one...it is not possible for race to have no feet..so footless could mean..no proper footing in society yet becos of lack of a civilization....and over time he became cultured and became knowledgeable and became Noble..hence Arya..the Noble one.

So that whole verse could have just meant the evolution of mankind!

I have no idea if I am right but your post gave me this thought.

Monkey has only nostrils but no raised nose. When man evolved from the primates, slowly the nose and the forehead became more and more prominent.
A Wide forehead and a sharp nose denote clever people and cunning people respectively.

I was reading the Ajamila episode yesterday and I was thinking that all credit went to Ajamila for calling out for his son Narayana when Yama Dutas came to take him..even though he did not mean to call Narayana as in Lord Vishnu..still he got saved by Vishnu Dutas cos Ajamila uttered the word Narayana Narayana.

Ok in this story..Ajamila wife was a sex worker and Ajamila fell in love with her..married her and had a few children with her.

In this whole story she is painted as a bad person who deluded Ajamila to lead a life of Adharma of the lust kind...but you see she gave birth to her youngest son whom they named Narayana and that son finally was the one whose named the father called when Yama Dutas came...so technically it was becos of the name and presence of this son that gave an opportunity to Ajamila to utter the word Narayana and Lord Vishnu was happy and sent his Dutas to save Ajamila from the Yama troop.

So that means this son was instrumental in saving him from hell.

That means Ajamila was lucky to have had a son like this...and now the even bigger question???

Why wasn't any credit given to Ajamila's wife??

A 100% evil and bad woman would have never had the bhagyam to deliver a son that could save his father from hell.

So I think it is high time we all give her some respect too..even though she was sex worker before marriage but she had the bhagyam of giving birth to a worthy son that become instrumental in saving Ajamila from hell.

I am quite sure some of our Puranas were gender biased and saw good even in fallen males but never in a fallen woman.

Dear Renu,

It has always been a man's world.. more son in India
where being born as a woman is equated to being born as a sudra.

I always feel bad when Narayaneeyam speaks of a sthree and a sudra in the same level as being unfit for religious rituals and even for listening to sat-sang.

Ajamila fell in love with that woman. He left his family and children and went behind her to live in her style of life. He forgot his kula dharmam. You can't blame that woman for all these.

She could have named her youngest son as Maada saami or Kuppu saami. But she named him as Narayana. She herself must have called her son so many thousands of times and earned punya for uttering the word Nayarana.

Woman has always got the rough edge. I am glad now the youngsters have woken up to this truth and learned about their latent talents and powers and are giving a hard time to those who try to give them a hard time.

You ae right! A womn is rose... nice to those who respect and love her and prickly to those who ill treat and demean her.
