A German Proverb a day to brighten the day!

173a. Der Mensch kann überall und sowieso leben.
173b. Man can live anywhere and anyhow.

Man is has the greatest ability to adapt himself to anything - if he is forced to.

He can live in Alaska as well as he can in Sahara Desert
and man can eat anything that crawls, runs, swims and flies (including the ant eater!)

I wish that the new rumor that man eats bats, better be a mere rumor an no more!
Sadly while leaning to thrive on anything and anywhere Man destroys all the other things!

footnotes:
Der = The
Mensch = man
kann = can
leben = live
überall = anywhere
und = and
sowieso = anyhow

We can see subtle changes in life.
People stay off politely and safely.

People eat healthy and limited food
People cook fresh and eat fresh food.

People workout at home on machines.
People go for long walks during the day.

People wear masks and play safe.
Every cloud has a silver lining.

Corona Virus has its own effects
both the good and the bad - of course.

But MAN must remember the lessons learned
or Man will go back to his old ways in no time!

Life has always been uncertain in umpteen ways.
Now it is even more so due to Corona and COVID 19.

Need we increase the fear and the angst among people?
Can the people who has crazy followers talk irresponsibly?

Usually the African Amercn get ill treated by the so-called-white-people.
But they are no better than the others when they find a more vulnerable target!

Animals fight one another only for food and mate!
Human fight one another since they fear and hate!

A German Proverb a day to brighten the dull day!

174a. Mehr Menschen werden durch Worte als durch Schwerter verletzt.
174b. More people get hurt by words than by swords.

Tongue is a weapon which can cause damage in two different ways
by speaking the wrong words and by eating the wrong food.

Eating wrong food hurts only the eater
but speaking wrong words hurt everyone else.

Tongue is like a whip since it has no bones and is flexible.
Tongue is a sword since it can sting deeper than a sword.

Be aware of what you speak and what you eat.
Irresponsible words can cause irreparable loss!
"yaa kaavaar aayinum naa kaakka!"

footnotes:-
Mehr = More
Menschen = Peole ( manushan!)
werden = become
verletzt = hurt
durch = by / through
Worte = words
als = than
durch = by / through
Schwerter = swords

Corona and COVID 19 are transforming
every other person into an instant poet!

I must not feel left out of this long list.
I too have the need to feed the readers!

Here is my humble contribution in honor of
the Devastating CORONA and COVID 18.

My Tamil New Year resolution is to sing one complete round of Sreeman nArAyaNeeyam
as a garland of 100 rAga mAlika, once every month - starting on the 15th of the English month
or the first day of the Tamil month! What is not being used will fade out of circulation very soon!

A German Proverb a day to brighten the day!

175a. Mehr Menschen sind in Wein als in Wasser ertrunken.
175a. More people are drowned in wine than in water.

Remaining Sober is not be one's choice but by the compulsion.
Am I talking in riddles? No! Certainly not!

Man remains sober either because he can't afford to buy those drinks
or because he is expected to remain sober during a certain time of the day.

As children my sons made this comment after observing the alcoholics living around us.
"Thank God for making all bad habits very costly. Otherwise everyone will be an alcoholic!"

The same thing is true of dangerous drugs!
Most childhood celebrities end up becoming slaves to drugs!

Do they have too much money, too much freedom and too much bad company?

footnotes:-
Mehr = More
Menschen = people ( manushan!)
sind = are
ertrunken = drowned
in = in
Wein = wine
als = than
in = in
Wasser = water.

A German Proverb a day to brighten the dull day!

176a. Sucher sind die Finder und Finder sind die Bewahrer.
176b. Seekers are the Finders and the Finders are the Keepers.

Nothing is achieved without serious, sincere and focused efforts.
Thousand things exist around us to distract us from our aim / goal.

White light is scattered light consisting of all the colors of the spectrum.
But when focused by a convex lens or a concave mirror it can start a fire!

A beam of Laser can travel a large distance and still remain a mere beam of rays!.
Over 3000 feet, its radius becomes roughly half a foot or the beam is just 1 foot wide!

The uninterrupted focusing of the mind is a 'Tapasya' / a Penance / a Perseverence.
But Remember that "There is no pain without gain" just as "There there is no gain without pain".

footnotes:-
Sucher = The Seekers
sind = are
die = the
Finder = finders
und = and
Finder = the finders
sind = are
die = the
Bewahrer = keepers

One may track the effect and result of Tapasya in the following video clippings.
Tiny tots who know nothing about dancing become full fledged dancers in less than 3 years!
Enjoy the music, the dance and the talent of these budding artists!

A German Proverb a day to brighten the dull day!

177a. Wer sich in einen Streit einmischt, hat oft eine blutende Nase.
177b. He who in a quarrel gets mixed up, often ends up with a bleeding nose.

Never get involved in a quarrel between any two persons.
You will become the common enemy for both those persons!

They both may often join hands and give you what-they-think-you-deserve...
for interfering/ intervening and trying to ruin their pet-pretend-personal-quarrel!

uralukku oru pakkam idi! ivarukkO iraNdu pakkamum idi! :(

Footnotes:-
Wer sich = He who
in = in
einen Streit = a quarrel
einmischt = gets mixed up
oft = often
hat = has
eine = a
blutende = bleeding
Nase = nose!

I wonder our interference really has any consequences!

A young boy accompanied his thatha from TN to a shop.
His thatha got for him an orange candy - perfectly spherical.

The child started choking on it and no one but I noticed it.
I put my finger in his mouth and managed to pull out the candy.

I was happy I could save the life of a small child
by being alert and having the presence of mind.

The child later fell over into a water tub kept in front of their quarters
just 2" high 2" diameter and got mysteriously drowned in that tub!

One can drown in such a small tub only if one stands in siras-aasanam!
And yet it happened when the entire family was in that house at that time!

The moral I learned is that...
No one can't change the Fate!

The child escaped death by choking but
he did not and could not escape death itself! :(

Hope is what emerged last from Pandora's box!
Hope was what followed all those horrors let loose!

Hope is what make us pull through all hardships.
Hope is what makes our ephemeral life worth living.

Let us hope and pray that this Tamil New Year will be
more Auspicious, Prosperous and Happy for all of us!

Let us start the New year with a delightful dance from the Ananda Series!

Nothing like bhakthi, classical music, excellent dance, colorful costumes,
dazzling ornaments and talented young beautiful dancers to lift one's mood.

According to Hesiod, when Prometheus stole fire from heaven, Zeus, the king of the gods, took vengeance by presenting Pandora to Prometheus' brother Epimetheus. Pandora opened a jar left in her care containing sickness, death and many other unspecified evils which were then released into the world. Though she hastened to close the container, only one thing was left behind – usually translated as Hope, though it could also have the pessimistic meaning of "deceptive expectation".

From this story has grown the idiom "to open a Pandora's box", meaning to do or start something that will cause many unforeseen problems.[6] Its modern, more colloquial equivalent is "to open a can of worms".[7]

A German Proverb a day to brighten the dull day!

178a. Ob zu kämpfen oder zu lieben, es erfordert zwei Personen.
178b. Whether to fight or to love, it requires two persons.

One hand can't make any sound by waving itself in the air.
One needs two hands to clap and make a sound.

Or the one hand waving in the air needs
another thing which can make a sound when hit.

So to make a new relationship or to break an existing one
both the parties involved must be be willing to do so.

If one of the two is unwilling, than nothing will happen!

Footnotes:-
Ob = Whether
zu = to
kämpfen = fight
oder = or
zu = to
lieben = love
es = it
erfordert = requires
zwei = two
Personen = persons

A proverb a day to brighten the day.

179a. Was niemals sein wird, wird niemals sein!
Und was auch immer sein muss, wird sein!

179b. What will never be, will never be!
And whatever must be, will be!

Tenacity of purpose also has its own limitation!

The Fox must eventually realize that his umpteen jumps
will never help him to taste the grapes ( be it sour or sweet!)

The parrot waiting for the fruit to ripen ( ilavu kaaththa kiLi)
must eventually realize that it is waiting for a cotton pod to ripen!

The simple adage in Tamil has a lot to convey
"kittaadhaayin vettene maRa!"

Instead of wishing and waiting for the impossible to happen,
one must know when to let go and move on with ones life.

footnotes:-
Was = What
niemals = never
sein wird = will be
wird = will
niemals = never
sein = be
Und = and
was = what
auch immer = always
sein muss = must be
wird sein = will be.

Will working and studying from home become the new normal?

Everything seems to be going on as usual through keyboards and screens!

No traffic, no noise, no pollution, no fumes, no visitors, no fuss and no nonsense!

See how well we adapt to the changing circumstance and life style!

Have no doubt that "The fittest survives and the others slowly perish!"

A proverb a day to brighten the day.

180a. Wissen ohne Übung macht nur einen halben Künstler aus.
180b. Knowledge without practice makes one but half an artist.

Knowing is one thing but doing it is quite another matter altogether!
Actually Doing = Knowing + Practicing Patiently aiming at Perfection.

The critics who tear into tiny pieces many of the budding artists
KNOW a lot, but will NOT be unable to perform better than those artists.

Practice makes one perfect. There is no short cut!
If one trains like an asuran, one can sing like a dhEvan!

footnotes:-
Wissen = Knowledge
ohne = without
Übung = practice
macht = makes
nur = only
halben = half an
Künstler = artist
aus einen = out of one

Para kaaya pravesam ( Entering into another person's body) is an ancient concept of India.
That power lies beyond the ability of everyone - other than the truly liberated siddha purushas.

Celibacy is a life long vratham attached to the physical body of a person and not to the aathma residing in that physical body. One's aathma does not get contaminated or corrupted by any physical experience.

So when Adhi Sankara was expected to answer questions related to family life and love in a serious debate, he decided to enter into the body a dead king and live as the king for over a month.

During that time he found out the answers he was seeking and went back to his own body -
just before it got destroyed by the King's soldiers.

Anything can be offered to God! Our Devotion, Our Hopes, Our Dreams and even Our Sorrows!
After all it is He who really enjoys or feels what every living thing in His creation enjoys or feels!

A proverb a day to brighten the day.

181a. Gezeichnete Brunnen werden selten trocken.
181b. Drawn wells seldom become dry.

We do not lose what we regularly use...
be it an art, a skill, a talent or an education!

I was once surprised to learn that a lady who studied in the same institution as me
did not remember which year she had graduated from that institution!

IF she can't remember the year of her graduation,
what will she remember of what she had learned?

I have no idea! I bet neither did she!!!

footnotes:-
Gezeichnete = Drawn
Brunnen = wells
selten = seldom
werden = become
trocken = dry

A proverb a day to brighten the day.

182a. Die Vorgewarnten sind die Bewaffneten
182b. The forewarned are the forearmed.

Knowledge is power.
Knowledge must be acquired at all costs.

Knowledge prepares one for the future.
Knowledge helps one to plan the future actions.

If one fails to act despite being forewarned,
he is most certainly a Zero and not a Hero!

Footnotes:-
Die = The
Vorgewarnten = forewarned
sind = are
die = the
Bewaffneten= forearmed.

Wie die Zeit vergeht! (How Time flies!)

It is more than six months I got the strange of idea of posting in this thread
a German proverb everyday with its meaning and footnotes.

The reason?

One must learn something new everyday...
may be a slokam / a poem / a line / or at least a word.

Knowledge is power. Acquire it and administer it! :)

A proverb a day to brighten the day.

183a. Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall.
183b. Pride comes before the downfall.

When God wants to punish someone, He robs his / her power to discern the right from the wrong. So the Ego flourishes, humility perishes and the pride leads to the downfall!

Be it the ancient Kings/ Demons / the super human characters from Epics, the moment their vivEkam ( power to discern) gets compromised, their downfall starts!

He / She suffers most - who cherishes immense EGO!
According to Einstein, Ego = 1 / Knowledge.

So the less is one's knowledge...the more is one's Ego!
So the more is one's Knowledge...the less is one's Ego!

footnotes:-
Hochmut = Pride / Haughtiness
kommt = comes
vor = before
dem = the
Fall = downfall
