The Aristocrats.
The aristocrats wore dresses with lace,
The ladies wore gem studded necklace;
As long as they lived in their place,
Where Good Fortune did them emplace;
When the evil fortune did them displace,
And forced them to live among populace;
The dream of going back to their palace,
Was the only idea giving them some solace.
P.S.
FORTUNE IS FICKLE MINDED.
IF HOSPITALITY CAN BECOME HOSTILITY OVERNIGHT
SO CAN A PRINCE BECOME A PAUPER OVERNIGHT! :moony:
"நான் பணக்காரன்" ; "எனக்கு நிறைய சுற்றத்தினர் உள்ளனர்";
"நான் யௌவனம் நிரம்பியவன்" என்றெல்லாம் கர்வம் கொள்ளாதே.
காலம் நினைத்தால் இவற்றை எல்லாம் ஒரே நிமிடத்தில்
கொள்ளை அடித்துக் கொண்டுபோய் விடும். உலகமே பொய்க் காட்சி.
பிரம்மம் மட்டுமே உண்மையானது என்று அறிந்து நீயும் பிரம்மமாக ஆகிவிடு.
I do not know (nor do I wish to know ) who are the cause for this
unprecedented (unpresidented??!!) hike in the traffic in this thread.
It has reached a record of 2100 during the past 24 hours.
Whoever it may be I thank that person (Those persons?)
I, for one, believe that it is NOT the number of stars ONE SINGLE person can bestow
that decides the usefulness of the thread or its popularity as
the number of views of persons who do not know (or wish to) rate the thread!
Well if one can get the stars AND the traffic then he/ she is truly blessed!!!
THE ASTRONOMICAL CHARGE FOR CUTTING THE SICK TREE AND REMOVING IT 450$!!!! :shocked:
I do not want to know about the transplantation of the replacement tree! :wacko:
Is it a complicated operation on a human to cost so much ( ~31,000 Rs) ??? :faint:
NOW I understand why lay people go on to lay even tar roads in their property - with little or no experience!
The surface of the road may not be smooth - but it will save from holes getting burnt in their pockets!
The Iron Clad lad.
The sentimental ballad,
Made the listeners glad;
They were all iron clad,
But there was a young lad;
Enjoying his simple salad,
He was the one thin clad;
In fact he was under clad,
He too should be iron clad!
We believe that we live one of the safest localities of the state we live in.
We never had any fear and would sleep in a relaxed manner - but any more...
The two old ladies living in the opposite house has an intruder during last night.
Their dog barked and woke them up before he could do any mischief.
When the ladies got up and switched on the lights they were in time to see a man fleeing.
The police came at the middle of the night. Nothing was stolen and nobody was hurt.
BUT we were completely and blissfully unaware of these things until
the ladies went around warning everyone in the neighborhood.
Guess what... even sound we used to ignore seemed to become
magnified and threatening - ruining our shut eye during the night!
The persons who slept peacefully as usual were the two kids and one old man
who were assured that the other three members will handle if there is any crisis!
P.S.
THIS explains why every gent and lady who walk past the house has 1/ 2/ 3/ 4 dogs of all breeds and sizes.
Even if they can't fight the intruder, they can still wake up the householders in time to deal with the unwelcome guest. :wof:
Lovelorn Lady.
It was not easy, her, to tell,
She was under an evil spell;
The family members’ loud yell,
Never in her deaf ears fell!
Her life had become a real hell,
Better to be locked up in a cell;
Tears in her eyes did swell,
She tried hard, them, to quell!
A king collected money for the construction of a lake - a water reservoir. Everyone was supposed to give the maximum possible contribution. There is no need to say that the courtiers and the wealthy merchants parted with huge sums of money to impress the king.
An old widow gave a quarter rupee towards her contribution. The man in charge of collecting money ridiculed her for the paltry sum donated. But the king who was present there put the right sense into the thoughtless mocking man.
The king said, "While the wealthy men have parted with merely a small part of their huge fortune, this old woman has donated her one day's earning. That means she will go hungry until she can work tomorrow and earn another quarter rupee with which she can buy something to eat to keep her body and soul together."
Moral:
The Best Gift is not what we can throw at others very easily - without feeling a pinch.
The Best Gift is what we manage to part with pleasure from our very limited means!"
P.S:
I have distinguished two types of gift givers...
The first type give gifts suitable to their status and wealth.
The second type gives gifts suitable to the recipient's status and wealth!
The gifts given by the first type will be uniform to every recipient.
So those gifts will be given in the crowd or the 'Sabhai' full of guests.
The gifts given be the second type will vary from person to person.
So they always make it a point to present the gifts in secrecy rather than in a crowd.

The Wine Glass.
It was the over dose of the drink,
That made him unable to think;
His found it harder to blink,
Being on deep sleep’s brink;
The lady in the lovely pink,
Did in fear from him shrink;
He stumbled up to the sink,
To make sure he won’t stink;
The cunning dame in the mink,
Had in her mind a crooked kink;
She wanted to establish a link,
The easiest way was to clink!
On 4th June 1807, the well known Pall Mall in London was aglow with the world’s first ever street lighting! The man behind the miracle was Frederick Winsor. The occasion was the birthday celebration of King George III. Very soon street lights became part of the daily life in all major cities of the world.
Today it will be difficult for us to imagine a world without street lights. But in the past there was complete darkness once the night fell. The main source of light at night was the moon. But it rises and sets at different time everyday and the “new-moon-days” turn out to be “no-moon-days”.
In the past, most people would stay indoors after dark. It was a challenge to find one’s way in the dark. Also the darkness provided complete cover to the deadly criminals. So dangerous was the darkness that the Roman writer Juvenal warned that it was extreme carelessness to go out for supper–without writing one’s will first!
In 1416, all the householders were asked to hang lanterns outside their houses, in the winter, by the Lord Mayor of London. Louis XI of France issued similar orders in 1461, in the interest of the people’s safety.
In U.S.A the main streets of New York were lit by whale-oil-lamps tacked on posts. The lighting was bleak and dim. With the invention of the gas lighting, things improved fast. By 1830, gas street lighting was adopted in New York and most of Europe.
Independent of each other, Joseph Swan of England and Thomas Alva Edison of USA invented the filament electric lamp in 1878 and 1879 respectively. Using vacuum space, bulbs were made brighter and lasted longer.
As soon as electric lamps appeared on the streets, the crime rates dropped dramatically. Yet electric lights superseded gas lamps very slowly. Only when driving the newly invented automobiles demanded brighter and better lighting, Sodium and Mercury lamps came into use in 1930s.
Today we take for granted the efficient lighting system, flooding the streets at night time. Those who complain of the high cost of electricity will be “shocked” by this information. To get the same illumination, we will have to spend 500 times more on candles than on a fluorescent bulb!
Come what may, the street lights have come to stay!
