[h=3]97% engineering graduates cannot speak English fluently: Survey[/h]As many as 97% engineering graduates in the country cannot speak English, which is required for jobs in corporate sales or business consulting, revealed a new survey. The survey also found that 51% of them are not employable based on their spoken English scores and of the 6 lakh engineers that graduate annually, only 2.9% candidates are the fluent while speaking English. Pronunciation and fluency were found to be major barriers in effective spoken English. The survey, conducted by Aspiring Minds, an employability evaluation and certification company, took into account almost 30,000 students across 500 engineering colleges in the country.

International aid is on the way following appeals by the government, but so far, most of the help has come from volunteers ferrying noodles, rice and clean water door-to-door in small boats. Heavy monsoon rains that began in late June — compounded more recently by Cyclone Komen — have triggered some of Myanmar's worst flash floods and landslides in recent memory.

[h=3]New 'all-weather' fence to seal 100km of LoC in year[/h]The army is all set to fence off infiltrators in the Kashmir Valley with a new improved all-weather barrier by next August as part of a strategy to overhaul border security. The army had identified “high priority areas” — most vulnerable to infiltration — along 100km of the Pakistan border in the Valley to replace the existing fence with the new one, Northern Army commander lieutenant general DS Hooda told HT. The construction will begin in April 2016 in “hot sectors” such as Tangdhar, Keran and Gurez that sit on major infiltration routes along the Line of Control, the de facto border between India and Pakistan.

[h=3]All major rivers of Himachal in spate, more rain on the way[/h]With heavy rainfall lashing most mid and low altitude regions of the state for the past two days, all major rivers in Himachal Pradesh are in spate increasing fear of flooding in floodplains. The water levels of rivers such as Beas, Parvati, Sutlej and Ravi have surged, causing widespread damage to land along the rivers, leading the state government to issue an alert to warn people against venturing near the rivers and their tributaries. The state government is monitoring the situation and has directed administrations in various districts to remain vigilant and take adequate measures to rescue the people affected by the rain and compensate them as per the relief manual. Shimla Meteorological Centre director Manmohan Singh said lesser rain was received on Sunday as compared to Saturday.

The battle over salt played out recently and in a major victory, a public sector laboratory from Bhavnagar has humbled the giant multi-national corporation Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) to restore control over a patent to efficiently make the everyday commodity iodised salt. Eighty-five years after the famous ‘Dandi March’ during which in 1930 Mahatma Gandhi launched the famous ‘Salt Satyagraha’ that eventually vanquished the British from India, a modern day tug of war over salt unfolded once again.
