[h=3]Rapid warming and disintegrating polar ice sets the stage for ‘societal collapse’[/h]The Arctic and Antarctic are seeing an accelerated collapse of both sea and land ice. Arctic sea ice reached a new record low, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reports. Compared to the record low set in January 2016, last month’s new record low Arctic sea ice extent was smaller by the size of Wyoming. Climate models have long predicted that if we keep using the atmosphere as an open sewer for carbon pollution, the ice cap would eventually enter into a death spiral because of Arctic amplification - a vicious cycle where higher temperatures melt reflective white ice and snow, which is replaced by the dark land or blue sea, which both absorb more solar energy, leading to more melting.

[h=3]Scientific Panel Says Editing Heritable Human Genes Could Be OK In The Future[/h]Scientists could be allowed to make modifications in human DNA that can be passed down through subsequent generations, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine say. Such a groundbreaking step should only be considered after more research and then only be conducted under tight restrictions, the academies write in a highly anticipated report released Tuesday. The academies determined that new gene-editing techniques had made it reasonable to pursue such controversial experiments down the road, though not quite yet. "It is not ready now, but it might be safe enough to try in the future," R. Alta Charo, a bioethicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison who co-chaired the committee, said.

[h=3]Humana to leave Obamacare exchanges next year[/h]Health insurer Humana is leaving the Affordable Care Act's public insurance exchanges for next year as it regroups after ending its proposed combination with rival insurer Aetna. Humana Inc. covers about 150,000 people on exchanges in 11 states. The insurer said Tuesday it had taken several actions to improve that business, but it was still seeing signs of unbalanced risk in that customer population. Health insurers have struggled to attract enough healthy people to their risk pools to balance the claims they incur from people with expensive medical conditions. Humana and Aetna said earlier Tuesday that they were calling off Aetna's roughly $34 billion acquisition of Humana. That deal already

[h=3]Sikhs opened their temple doors to Oroville Dam evacuees - and strangers came pouring in[/h]Each morning before the break of dawn, Nirmal Singh makes his way to a small stage at the Shri Guru Ravidass Temple adorned with roses and silk. There, the priest sits and reads prayers from a centuries-old Indian text to open the day. It's usually a quiet affair, with words spoken in Punjabi to an empty hall the size of a large backyard - a solemn start at the small Sikh temple that sees few people outside of weekend services. But this week, Singh had company. Bodies shuffled under blankets in front of him. On Tuesday a Mexican couple and their kids woke up to his right, revealing the head scarves they wore in respect of Sikh traditions. In a nearby room, an African American man was also was
