Make your own car at Meerut auto scrapyard in just four weeks - The Economic Times

i dont know why, but this article reminded me forlornly of the now absent moore market. i used to love the place and would spend days there during summer holidays.

this article talks of another type of innovative mind. to make something out of nothing. i bow before the ingenuity of those guys and their likes mentioned in the article.

of very interesting note, is the comments of the mainline auto companies' representatives on page 3. if i were them, probably i would say the same thing :). i guess.

India has good family values and this must be preserved and used in the proper way. Once this falls , India will be in deep trouble considering the other factors such as population density and corruption. We must pursue a different model from the USA. The model to be followed is this- Every individual who is healthy should have opportunity for some job at any point of time. Every job should have good working environment, in terms of friendliness, fairness, respect and pay. No working member at any point of time should find it difficult to meet the basic needs of life and providing worthy education to their children. Further a rule should be brought out that children who dont take care of their parents to their parent's satisfaction must pay additional taxes to the government . The government and others in turn must provide good old - age care centres, the only condition for acceptance being that the parents whose children dont take care of them must transfer their inheritance( after death) to any of the recognized charities.

Once this basic set of requirements for looking after citizens is fulfilled, people will have no hesitation to take up any risk as long as they are prepared for a lower but manageable income in case of bankruptcy. Also if we thus provide the basic needs for the people, people will be happy with even low-paying but self satisfying jobs. Nobody will be worried if they are not able to show off wealth to others.

Whether J wants to dismantle the samachchIr kalvi with a watered down syllabus for all the children or not, I want such a system to be dismantled, since it is against the principles of choice in democracy and spirit of competition and innovation in education. It is not a question of leveling down, but one of building up.

Look at the other such schemes aimed at equality and much touted by the previous TN government.

• In the sama-pangkti bhojanam, the diners are not served the watery kanji which is the staple food of the downtrodden. Everyone is served a feast--leveling up.

• In the samatvapuram, the government is supposed to provide identical residential units and let them be occupied by people from all castes, clans and religions. Today's residential flat complexes in urban areas are actually such samatvapurams. While it is another issue that the previous government favoured its party men mostly to occupy these samatvapuram houses, the government did not build a poor man's hut for everyone--so, leveling up.

• TN governments vie with each other to give free consumer items such as TV, cooking gas connections--and now grinder, mixer and a laptop. The idea is to let the poor have the same lifestyle that only the haves can afford--again a question of building up, not leveling down.

• In the samachchIr kalvi, therefore, why should the government try to level down the syllabus? True, human brains and capabilities are not equal, but then, is stunting their growth a solution? What the government should do in samachchIr kalvi is to regulate the fees structure of private and elite public educational instutions, and subsidise admission of deserving poor children to elite schools, thus preserving the edge of competition and innovation which is so vital to education.

TO ALL,
one of the grandsons of Dr.Manmohan Singh was studying in the same school where my
grand daughter studied. The name of the School is"Sardar Patel School in Lodhi colony,
Newdelhi. This school is one of the prestigious schools in Newdelhi where admissions are purely by merit.Perhaps they may have some quota to accommodate the wards of VVIPS.

Sri "Saidevo",

When we pass through the villages in Tamil Nadu, we can see the "Thanthai Periyar Samathuvapuram" colonies, built by DMK Government. (A pet scheme of Kalaignar). What is striking in these tenements are they are built away from the main Villages. And interestingly the first Compound in the village is "Podu Mayanam" (பொது மயானம்). What an idea to spread the message of Samathuvam.

Regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

BK,

to the best of my knowlege, MMS's family is keen on education. one daughter, i have heard, is in the usa, doing phd, involved in social politics etc.

MMS himself is a phd from cambridge or oxford.

so would not be surprised, if the grandson, is a chip of his grand dad.

sai,

i have been saying this all along. economic level of equality.

we have now economic agraharams, as i view it. if you can view 4 crore flat. you live with others who afford the same, and along with it, similar support, educaitonal and social institutions, that these type of people patronise.

the other extreme, poverty too is a great leveller. for these, corporation schools, street side biriyani or idli stalls.

ofcourse now both groups have grinders and TVs. soon both will have personal computers. :)

samacheer should raise the standards to som extent. but seriously sai, i am uncomfortable at the way nowadays children spending so much time with their books. 98% of what they learn, is not used later in life.

maybe MK was correct, in that, we tone down our focus, and encourage sports and such like. kids are too serious to enjoy playtime. that is sad.

sai, just to stress a point: till 1950s, there used to be two types of doctors: mbbs, and lmp (licensed medical practitioners). the latter was good for almost 90% of common ailments. then the madras govt abolished lmp. still dont know why. you had someone between a nurse and mbbs, got the licence in 3 years, knew the limits of their knowledge and were very accessible.

i was delivered by lmp. so were 3 cousins, same lmp. only one needed mbbs, because long first delivery pains. the lmp realized the limit of her knowledge and called the mbbs.

what i am trying to say, though not very coherently, is that sometimes i feel, we are stuffing our kids with useless book knowledge, all in the name of 'education'. i think so, atleast, sometimes.

This is a real life incident. A professor from our community played a great role in the education of a dalit boy. The boy who hailed from a poor dalit community managed to do very well in studies. The professor spent his free time mentoring , providing the boy with books and even access to the university library. The boy managed to crack IIT-JEE securing a listed rank in general merit quota with only the professor as a mentor , no other coaching. The story is literally like from one of the stories in by-gone days.study by the night lamp, hardwork and little facilities. The boy I have heard has now done well for himself and his family. This gentleman it may surprise somehere is an orthodox person, performing his sandhyavandam. Yet his orthodoxy did not come in the way of supporting a true cause.

There was some news report that this daughter of MMS got into some drunken driving case and was let off lightly because of the high connection. In some forum it was also rumoured that George Bush used that "incident" to make MMS and through him Sonia, to dance to his tune in the nuclear bill.

Subramaniam Swamy says that he knows MMs well as the latter was advisor to the ministry which Swamy was heading and says "the PM is a biological wonder...he has no backbone!".

Dear K:

You don't like all MBBS, after scratching LMPs - How about all MDs in the US? What's happening in Canada?

As you know, MD takes 13 + 4 + 4 + at least 3 = 24 years of schooling to practice as an Internist or FP. Specialists will take another at least 3 more years!

I always wondered whether this is necessary? And my daughter who just got her MD and starting her Residency says YES!

The cost of getting a practicing MD is prohibitively very expensive! Why?

This is a serious bit of information and if true a movement should be started to demand the resignation of PM.
The country cannot be held to ransom like this.
The right to Information act can force Government to admit the truth in this unless GB Bush is so clever that he can cover up records in his own country and erase all discussions and documents presented to the Government in this matter.
I would personally like to know the source.

subbudu,

considering that subra swamy is the source, i would take it with a grain of salt.

the man has no following worth mentioning except a section of tambrams.

now re the 2G scam, he is or his admirers are trying to claim some fame for him. the forces that moved re 2G are far diabolical, than swamy could ever fathom. far more cunning and scheming involved here, than swamy could muster.

swamy could have been a nobel prize contender had he stuck to harvard and economics. dabbling in indian politics was, i think, a depth, too deep for him to swim, and him ending up as a third rate politician in the backwaters of tamil nadu.

had swamy stuck with bjp, atleast they would have found him a loksabha seat from their heartland. but he was too pompous, and had an exaggered image of himself. he begged to be with J in this election, and was given the boot. enough said.

people who support swamy are of the extreme conservative and hindutva type, in my opinion. perhaps they do not know, that swamy is married to a white american christian, daughter suhasini married to ex foreign secretary, salman hyder's son and who made a big issue of it in the radical journals, re supposed threats from hindutva folks re her IR marriage.

i don't care a bit about this, but to many here, those flag carriers of swamy, that might make them re-evaluate swamy. previous times, when i have mentioned this, i was responded with a deafening silence.

Four Indians named among Asian Heroes of Philanthropy - Pictures - Pictures/Videos - News in Pictures | Economic Times

i am one of those, who wishes that our scriptures, sobent on wordsmithing philosophies, but not giving enough emphasis to charity.

yes, people will always point out that there are instances of great charity giving. but what i mean is, that there is no organized diktat to perform and give. give. give more. give till it hurts.

the usa for all its warts, i think, made charity giving, a national obsession. considering the number of requests that come to me every week - money for this cause or the other.

even the policemen here in toronto, who make more than 100k a year, have their welfare fund.

so it is gratifying when a fellow tamil is listed among the 40 most charitable persons of asia by forbes magazine, which boasts itself to be a 'capitalist tool' - take it whatever meaning you want.
