I read this delightful book The Apprenticeship of a Mathematician - an autobiography of famous French Mathematician Andre Weil (at least two times, the last time was nearly a year ago). He is the de facto leader of Bourbaki Group (a group of French Mathematicians taking a fictionalized name) which worked from first principles and wrote ground breaking books.
Andre Weil learnt Sanskrit when he was in highschool/College and knew about India. One of his famous quotes is:
"God exists since mathematics is consistent, and the Devil exists since we cannot prove it."
He was imprisoned during second world war and he continued his research while in prison.
