I have visited a large number of temples all over the country and though most members will know about what I am going to say I am going to start my return with this topic.
In the south normally devotees are not permitted into the garbha raham
I hink Bhimasankar a jyotlinga is the firstt southern temple to differ rom the practice
I differentiate temples South of the Narmada as South
Right from Bhimaankar to Kedarnath you can perform pooja and Abhishekam
No des code is there except in Lngaraja temple in Bhubhaneshwar
Where I was asked to wear Pancakatcham an my wife was asked to cover her head with her Palu
This condition was there in Puri also. But my wife was not asked to cover her head in Puri
Anoter interesting fact
In some temples in Himachal both of us were asked to cover our heads
Most interesting
In the Gayatri temple in Himachal near Kullu the priest was a lady and she said ladies can chant gaythri and initiated my wife

Namaskarams,

In South India, the temples are constructed as per the agama sastram and the dieties are installed with ashtabandhanam etc. with all the vedic chanting. After that 45 days special poojas are performed to bring sannidhiyam to the diety. Because of all these, the general public are not allowed to touch the idols to protect the sannidhiyam. In North India, in Vaishnodevi temple, the abode of tri-devis, the general public are not allowed to touch the idols (pindis).
In North Indian temples only the marble idols are being installed. In South Indian temples, the idols are carved by sthapathis who are well versed in the construction of temples and idols. Each and every step of carving has its own speciality. So the idol attains a special stature after installation. In North India, the general public virtually embrace the idol, put their heads on the idols etc. etc. which are not allowed in South Indian Temples. In Uttar Pradesh, at Vrindavan, there is a temple for Sri Krishna called Banke Bihari Temple. Here also you can have darshan of the diety from a distance. You cannot touch the diety. In many temples in North India, mainly the Siva Lingam is being allowed to touch by the general public and not other dieties.

In Bhimashanker, Old Somnath and Nageshwar and Lingaraj temples they are carved and not marble. I these places Rudram was being chanted.Kedarnath was also not marble.
All temples are governed by their respective Agamas. The temples I mentioned are Jyotir lingas with special powers,Incidentally if you go south westward the resrictions are more.
It is the so called aacharam and anushtanam which are the man cause for restrictions.
Incidentally in the north west in VasishtAshram siva linga you can do puja.
Even in Kamakhya a sakthi peddam thee are no restrictions
