Siruvachur

Hello everyone,
My family’s kula deivam (family deity) is the goddess at the Siruvachur Madurakaliamman Temple in Tamil Nadu. I moved to Germany a few years ago and haven’t been back home for the pooja ceremonies with family. We are planning to visit the temple in December with my spouse and our youngest child, and we’d like to perform two important rituals:
  1. Maavilakku Pooja (offering of the rice-jaggery lamp)
  2. Head-shaving (tonsure) for our youngest child as a vow / offering to the goddess.
Could someone please kindly explain what the procedure is at the temple for these two rituals?
In particular:
  1. What offerings are required (e.g., maavilakku materials, fruits, coconuts, special cloths)? and where to buy them?
  2. What time of day / what days is the temple open for these rituals (I understand this temple opens certain days only).
  3. For the head-shaving: where is it done, is there a barber facility in the temple premises or nearby, what are the customs (bath afterwards, disposal of hair etc.)?
  4. Any dress code or special etiquette we should observe (for us as a family, especially coming from abroad)?
  5. Approximate donation / fee (even a ball-park) and whether we need to bring local currency (rupees) or can pay by card/online.
Any good time in December (which day of week / auspicious day) to do these, so we can plan flights/hotel.

We would very much appreciate guidance, especially from someone who has done these rituals at Siruvachur temple.
Thank you in advance for your help and blessings.

It is a great temple - very powerful Goddess. Gives so much peace to visit the temple and pray. I have only prayed there and did not perform any rituals you have listed.
Temple opens only on Monday, Friday, fullmoon and no moon days. In addition it is open on certain festival days. I think the timings are 8am to 8pm - to be verified.
For maavilakku I have seen some people pound the rice in the temple premises itself - they have provided the facilities like ural and ulakkai. Your family elders/relatives may know what tradition your family follows.
Check this page for facilities https://hrce.tn.gov.in/hrcehome/facility.php?tid=25213
You may get in touch with the temple directly to find out about mudi irakkuthal. I visited the temple in the evening - so may not have seen this being performed.
Dress code - ideally veshti, thundu, sattai for gents and saree for ladies. Guess salwar kameez is also allowed. Suggest avoiding any western wear as it is in a village.
You will need to pay in Indian rupees either via gpay or similar upi or cash.
I suggest reaching out to a forum member here Nannilam Balasubramanian - he has not been active for about 6 years now, but he has the same deity as his kula deivam
