Seeking information regarding a visit to a temple

Hi all,

I am interested in finding out whether there are any special procedures to be followed while visiting a temple. If there are, do they vary depending on whether it is an Iyer temple, Iyengar temple or others? What is the difference between these procedures between North and South India.

I would appreciate any help from the members.
