It is indeed foolishness to single out a particular day in a year and celebrate only that day with great joy. Everything in this objective world is impermanent and unreal. Hence we must contemplate on the eternal truth and reality. We should not waste our time brooding over the past or anticipating the future. It is great foolishness to worry about the future or the past, forgetting the present. The present is only real. Past is past, you cannot get it back, however much you pray for it. The future is hidden in the womb of time. Unable to internalise this truth, people worry about past and future. Hence, from now, give importance to the present. It is important that you consider every minute of your every day and celebrate it with new joy! Indeed, for a true devotee, every day is new; every day is a festival day!

You consider helping people in difficulties is service. No. It is not as simple as that. Your body should be constantly engaged in serving others. The human body consists of several limbs. All these limbs are meant to be engaged in serving your fellowmen and not for other activities. Unfortunately we are forgetting this basic fact. Every limb in the body has been granted by God for Karmopasana (worshipping God through service). Karmopasana is the only means by which the human life can be sanctified. We are building several temples. We are undertaking various spiritual practices. But all these sadhanas can give us only temporary satisfaction, not eternal joy. Our ancient sages have been able to achieve eternal joy through a conscious effort. Therefore, you must develop firm faith in the truth that nothing can provide eternal joy, except service to humanity. Undertake service to the suffering humanity. Service is not merely confined to health services. Service encompasses every possible help to fellow human beings.

Gladly share your education and wealth with your fellow human beings. God is the real owner of the wealth you acquire. Remember, the money you earn belongs to God’s Trust. You are His Trustee and accordingly, make proper utilisation of your wealth. Do not hanker over money or other forms of wealth. Instead, constantly contemplate on God. You don’t have to go to caves or forests or ashrams in search of Him. Wherever you are, He is with you. Develop this faith and win over your demonic qualities. Do not forget that what ultimately comes with you is not your wealth or education, but the sin or merit you have accumulated through your actions. Share at least a morsel of what you eat with others. Never forget to practice selfless love and service. Help yourself and help others, this is indeed the greatest spiritual practice (sadhana). Without following these principles, there is no peace and joy, anywhere in the world!

The word surrender has been misinterpreted and people promote idleness in the name of surrender. We think that we have surrendered our mind and body to the Lord. Your mind is not under your own control, how then can you hold it and give it to the Lord? You have no control over your own body too. So to say that you have surrendered your mind and body to the Lord is untrue! The flute is a very good example of an instrument close to the Lord and the one great quality in the flute is its complete surrender. There is nothing left inside the flute – it has no residual desires and is completely hollow. Like the flute has nine holes, our body also has nine holes. If we successfully remove the pulp of desire from our body, then there is no doubt that our body-flute will also become nearer and dearer to the Lord.

Unbelief is the insidious disease that is now rampant amongst people. It sets fire to the tiny shoots of faith and reduces life to cinders and ashes. You have no criterion to judge, yet you pretend to judge. Doubt, anger, poison, illness — all these must be destroyed before they grow. Repeat Rama’s name, whether you have faith or not. That will itself induce faith and create the evidence on which faith can be built. In addition, if you aspire to be a devotee, you must eschew attachment and aversion. You should not be proud if you sing well or decorate your worship room tastefully. There must be a steady improvement in your habits and attitudes; otherwise, spiritual discipline is a vain pastime. Your homes must be immersed in the highest peace (shanti) — undisturbed by any streak of hatred, malice, pride, or envy. No worship or penance can equal the efficacy of obedience to the command given for your liberation.

Good and bad, wealth and poverty, praise and blame go together in this world. You cannot derive happiness out of happiness (na sukhat labhate sukham). Happiness comes only out of sorrow. A wealthy man today may become a pauper tomorrow. Similarly, a pauper may become a rich man some day or other. Today you are being praised, but tomorrow you may be criticised. To consider praise and blame, happiness and sorrow, prosperity and adversity with equal-mindedness is the hallmark of a true human being. The Gita declares, “Remain equal-minded in happiness and sorrow, gain and loss, victory and defeat (sukha dukhe same kritva labhalabhau jayajayau). You can truly enjoy your life as a human being only when you consider both sorrow and happiness, profit and loss with equanimity. There is no value for happiness without sorrow. All the five elements have been created by the will of the Supreme. They must be used with reverential care and vigilant discrimination. Reckless use of any of them will only rebound on you with tremendous harm. Nature outside must be handled with discretion, caution and awe. It is the same with our inner ‘nature’ and internal instruments too! Of these, two are capable of vast harm - the tongue and one’s lust. Since lust is aroused and inflamed by the food consumed and the drink taken in, the tongue needs greater attention. While your eye, ear and nose have single uses, the tongue makes itself available for two purposes: to judge taste and to utter word - symbols of communication. You must control the tongue with double care, since it can harm you in two ways. Sage Patanjali, the author of Yoga Sutras has declared that when tongue is conquered, victory is yours!

Well, I have had darshannot once but many times, and yet, my evil fate has not left me and I am suffering even more than before!” True, you may have come and haddarshan, and have sowed fresh seeds secured from the holy places — seeds of love, faith, devotion, good company, godly thoughts, remembering God’s name, etc. And you may have learnt the art of intensive cultivation and soil preparation. Now you have to carefully sow the seeds in well-prepared fields of cleansed hearts. Until the new harvest, when the fresh produce comes in, don’t you have to consume the grain already stored in previous harvests? The troubles and anxieties you experience now are the crop collected in your previous harvests, so do not grieve and lose heart!

Egotism has struck deep roots in the heart and has grown to demonic proportions. People have become puppets, yielding to every pull of the string. They crave all things that confer temporary happiness on them and accumulate things that cater to their sense of power. They examine every item from their own selfish point of view. They are therefore enslaved by the monsters – envy, pride, fear and prejudice. True knowledge alone can save mankind from ruinous downfall. Sai has reiterated the four goals laid down in the Vedas. They are Truth, Righteousness, Peace and Love. Humanity must understand the importance of these four goals as foundational pillars, accept them, adore them and practice them in daily living. The second category consists of those who highlight their own excellences as well as the excellences of others (the middlings). The third category (the worse type) is that of those who pay attention to their own excellences and only to the faults of others, and the fourth category (the worst) is of those who present their own faults as excellences and the excellences of others as faults. The present day education has only a means of livelihood as its aim. It is job-oriented, not truth-oriented, not God-oriented. Life must be lived in love, peace and bliss. Therefore, even while in schools and colleges, boys and girls must know about the ever peaceful, ever blissful, ever loving Eternal Soul (Atma). The body, the senses, the mind, the reason and intellect are all unreal in the sense of temporary existence. Raising the standard of living is not as important as raising the level of consciousness. Education today highlights accumulation of things. Indeed, giving up is equally essential. Renunciation is not a loss; it is highly profitable, because you acquire joy thereby. Renunciation means freedom; it is surrender to God, love and freedom. God can be realised only through the expansion of Love. Students and youth must lead lives anchored in righteousness and wisdom, and be shining examples of simplicity, humility and mutual service.

Develop the quality of forgiveness (Kshama) and refrain from harshness in speech. You must realise that if you give up forbearance and forgiveness, you will have no peace. Whatever anyone may do to you, do not bother about it. What is it you lose on account of their ill behavior? If you resort to retaliation, you will only worsen your condition! You have no idea either of your strength or weakness. Face such situations bravely and do not allow yourself to be agitated over them. You must win over the other by your forbearance. Make forbearance your life-breath and your ideal. You all have the sweet essence of kindness, peace and compassion in you abundantly. With God’s grace, you are free from grief and bad qualities – Do not let them in! Born in society, brought up in society, educated by society and deriving countless benefits from society, what are you doing for society? Social service should be regarded as an expression of gratitude to society for what it has done for us. Without society we cannot survive. The God-given body should be employed for practising Dharma (prescribed duties). Women should treat even their daily chores as a form of concentrated work. If they are unable to attend a Satsang (spiritual gathering) on account of household duties, they should not feel miserable. Discharge of duties at home is as sacred as attending a satsang. Only if you do your duties at home properly will you be able to render proper service outside. In whatever work you do at home, whether sweeping the floor or making chapatis, convert it into a form of spiritual exercise. Infuse every action with love of the Divine and dedicate it to God.

A true human being is one who faces life’s difficulties with fortitude and overcomes them. For this, what is required is strength of the Spirit. Without spiritual strength, all other things are valueless. Whatever spiritual discipline you may practise or not, cultivate love for all. Offer that love as a divine offering to all. Only through love can world unity be promoted. It is because of the absence of love that all kinds of differences arise. Love is God. Live in Love. Make this the ruling principle of your life. Embodiments of Divine Love! Remember always that God permeates everything in the cosmos. Everything you experience is Divine. Everything you see is Divine. What you eat is Divine. The air you breathe is Divine. You cannot see the air, nor can you grasp it. Likewise you cannot grasp God. The eyes cannot see Him. He can only be experienced in the heart. Today man has taken to many paths to acquire wisdom. All the knowledge that one has acquired is not true knowledge in the strict sense of the term. Knowledge of the spirit, Atmic knowledge, is the true knowledge. That is Brahma Jnana (Knowledge of the Divine). Work, worship, and wisdom - all begin with service. No matter what service it is, if it is done with love and divine feelings, it becomes worship (upasana). What is wisdom? All actions related to our senses, the fleeting objects of the material world, speak of our ignorance. Wisdom dawns the moment the mind is withdrawn. The thoughtless state between two consecutive thoughts is Brahma Jnana. You are not able to experience this thoughtless state of Brahman and are carried away by fleeting, ephemeral, and momentary things. True wisdom dawns when all thoughts are decimated. Bhagawan's philosophy requires you to practice unity in work, worship, and wisdom.

Sathya Sai Baba
The third flower that God loves the most is the flower of compassion (daya) towards all living creatures. Live in amity with everyone, but do not have too much connection with people. The fourth special and significant flower that God dearly loves is that of forbearance (Kshama). The Pandavas suffered a lot at the hands of the Kauravas. But never did Dharmaraja lose forbearance. It was the virtue of forbearance that always won for Pandavas the protection of Krishna and made them an ideal to the rest of the world. God loves the offering of ever-blooming flowers of nonviolence, sense-control, compassion and forbearance (ahimsa, indriyanigraha, daya and kshama). God will be pleased with you and confer boons on you only when you offer Him the ‘flowers’ which are dear to Him. No benefit accrues from offering flowers, which fade and decay everyday.

- Divine Discourse, Aug 22, 2000.

A real human being always shines with the qualities of calmness,
forbearance and compassion. - Baba

Young people, the wealth you earn, the prosperity you acquire, the mansions you will build are all transient and temporary. If you want to lead a life of peace and happiness in future, it depends on the kind of actions you perform in the present. Your conduct is the most important thing in your life; this lays the foundation for your future life. It is only when you shape your present conduct along a proper path, your future will be peaceful and happy. The seed you plant today, will determine the kind of tree which grows. If you respect your parents today, your children will respect you in future. So, if you want to be near God, see good, do good, and be good. This is the way - the royal path to get nearer to God, and it is the primary duty of every human being.

You read in journals and newspapers about campaigns, conquests, victories, etc., but they are all material conquests. Campaign against the temptations of your senses; conquer your inner foes; triumph over your ego. This is the victory for which you deserve congratulations. The day becomes holy when you sanctify it by sadhana (spiritual practices), not otherwise. Sadhana can grow only in a field fertilised by Love. The love you have towards material objects, name, fame, wife and children should be sanctified by the overpowering Love for God. Add two spoons of water to two liters of milk; the water is appreciated as milk! At present your Sadhana can be described only as mixing two liters of water to two spoons of milk! Let the Love for God fill and thrill your heart; then, you cannot hate anyone, you cannot indulge in unhealthy rivalries, and you will not find fault with anyone. Your life will become soft, sweet and smooth.

One may desire something good. That is due to the inner prompting, the Iccha shakti, but one cannot fulfill that desire, unless one proceeds according to a plan which can guarantee success. The desire has to be developed into a deed. This requires Kriya shakti or the power of action. Above all, realisation depends on Jnana shakti or the force and clarity of wisdom, the self-confidence that flows from the mastery of the situation. This is a gift of grace from God, God installed in the heart. Whatever one plans and executes must be sublimated as an offering to God. Or else it will degenerate into barren gymnastics. God is Omnipresent. No one can deny God or ignore Him. When one denies God, one denies oneself. You must foster faith in God and know that He exists in all. That faith will plant in you, humility, courage and reverence.

Sun is the natural source of light. Human life is impossible without Sunlight. Sunlight is the cause for rains which enable crops to grow. Sun is also the source of health and happiness. Similarly, Right conduct (Dharma) is the Sunlight that illumines the entire Universe. The word Dharma means ‘that which upholds’. It is Dharma which teaches the right relationship between two individuals and between societies. Dharmareveals to every being, through their hearts, what is right and wrong, what is true and false. It is righteousness which promotes the wellbeing of societies. It is the protector of universal wellbeing. The Universe cannot be sustained without Dharma. A man of wisdom is more powerful than a physically strong man, just as a puny mahout is able to control an elephant. It is not enough for people to rely on physical strength alone.

True devotion consists not in merely chanting the name of Rama (the Lord) but in rendering help to the society and serving the needy. Only then can you become worthy of God's grace. Hanuman exemplified the ideal of implicit obedience to God's injunctions. True devotees should give no room for doubt. They must act with full faith in God. They must realise that everything belongs to God and should give up all senses of ‘I’ and ‘mine’. There is a basic difference between the attitude of the Gopikas (the simple cowherd womenfolk) towards Krishna and that of Yadavas of Dwaraka (relatives of Krishna). The Gopikas felt: "Krishna! We are Yours". While the Yadavas felt: "Krishna! You are ours." Their attitude was based on Ahamkara (sense of ego). That was responsible for their ultimate destruction.

All beings are images of God; all men are His pictures; then, why shut yourselves in? All creation is marching on a pilgrimage to Him; why then behave as if you are trekking it alone? People commit many offences, knowingly or unknowingly, not only in this life, but also in previous lives. The imprint of these actions is carried by the subconscious memory (Chitta) over many lives. When the mirror of the mind is soiled by these relics, the mind cannot perceive anything in its true state. This is the reason why people are unable to recognise their own true nature. Hence it is necessary to cleanse the mirror of impurities on it. This is done by regulating your food and recreational habits! You must ensure that the food you eat is obtained through righteous means. Many sufferings today are only because people consume food obtained by unrighteous means. It may not always be possible to ensure highest purity at all times. To get over this difficulty, there is an easy and effective solution! Before eating, offer the food to God! Then it becomes a gift from God (prasadam) and all impurities in the food are removed. This helps in cleansing the mind. Continue this practice always!
