Many clamour to experience spiritual bliss but few earn it, because they are too weak to reject the clamour of the senses! A little enquiry will reveal that senses are bad masters; the joy they bring is transitory and fraught with grief. Mere knowledge of this fact will not endow you with joy; only the contemplation of the might and majesty of God, can be a never-failing source of joy. No two individuals agree on any matter, be they brothers or sisters, life-mates or father and son. It is only as pilgrims on the Godward path that people heartily agree and lovingly co-operate. Be a pilgrim on the spiritual path even while attending to your daily duties. Feel that each moment is a step unto Him. Do everything, dedicating unto Him as He directs, as work for His adoration or to serve His children. Test your actions, words, thoughts on this touchstone: "Will this be approved by God? Will this rebound to His renown?"

Many people perform ritual worship (puja) to God, adore Him and want to follow Him. For whose benefit are these offerings? They are only for our own benefit and not for God’s! Consider this example. When we think of something exciting in our mind, we find that our words show positive energy and our actions also show excitement. On the other hand, if there are sad thoughts in our mind, then our external body will reflect the sadness our mind is experiencing. Take an even simpler example - think of a lime and think that you are cutting it! If you like lime, you will find saliva on your tongue! Actually, the lime juice has not come and touched your tongue. Merely the thought of the lime juice makes your tongue water. So too, people adore and worship God such that by thinking of the good qualities of the Divine, they will also be inspired to cultivate noble qualities.

We may get a doubt as to why God should have so many different names. Each of these in fact refers to a particular quality of the Lord. We know that in a house the son comes and addresses the head of the family as father, while the daughter-in-law calls him father-in-law, the grandson addresses him as grandfather, and the wife as “My dear husband”. Here we see that because he has established different types of relationships, he is addressed by different names by different people. Similarly, a brahmin is called a pujari(priest) if he performs puja and is called a cook if he is cooking. He acquires a different name depending on the nature of work that he performs. Similarly depending on the time, situation and the country, God has been given different names that are appropriate to the situation and role He plays.

The five elements that constitute the earth are also controlled by certain laws. Even the infinite ocean moves under certain laws and regulations. In order to get this limitation in the worldly plane, some discipline is necessary. In the context of the whole world, man’s life is only a part. Therefore man’s life has to be regulated. Whether it is for love, for hatred, or for anger, some regulation is necessary. For doing any kind of work in this world, there should be some order and discipline. Any work that you may do without discipline, will not yield good results. That which rules the world is the rule of law. What is required to control oneself and put oneself under the rule of law, is discipline. This control of oneself is like tapas or penance. A life, in which there is no discipline and control, will fail and fall one day or the other. One must recognise the truth that there should be controls on, and limits to, human nature.

When the oranges are brought in, some of them are green, some yellow, some ripe, some overripe, and so on. From all these oranges, they extract the juice and bottle it under a trade name. Once the juice is extracted and put in a bottle, you no longer see the different forms of the oranges which were present before. One can not say which part of the juice comes from which orange. Similarly, when all of us have merged ourselves in Divinity, we will not quarrel over individual forms and names. The relationship with the Lord is described as developing from Salokya(in the vicinity) to Samipya (nearness), to Sarupya (Form of the master) and then on to Sayujya (absorption into the Form). You can understand this clearly, if you take Salokya to mean, being in the kingdom ruled by the Lord, or as a servant in the palace where He dwells. You are under His fostering care. In the Samipya stage, you feel you are a personal attendant on the Lord, privileged to be near Him and to be called upon by Him for some personal service. You have neared the principle of Godhead, intellectually; you feel His presence ever, emotionally. Next, the stage of Sarupya is like being the brother of the King. He can wear the same robes. One has the splendour, the glory that bespeaks the full blossoming of the Divine latent within. Lastly, when you are the son, the heir apparent, you approximate as much as possible to the Royal Power and so, you can say, ‘I and My Father are One.’ These are the stages of the soul's journey to Realisation of the Oversoul.

Everyone is now seeking comfort and pleasure! If you tell someone that they can eat whatever they like and as much as they like, they will be delighted; if you add that they might develop, as a consequence, some illness, they will treat you as an enemy. No regimen or control is popular. But strength is derived only from control, restraint, and regulation. A person becomes tough and capable of endurance only if they welcome hardships. Struggle, and you get the strength to succeed. Seek the basis for the seen in the unseen. The tall skyscraper has a deep base reaching into the earth. This seen world has, as its base, the unseen Divine (Paramatma); your body is the vehicle through which you can search, investigate, and discover that base. Your body is an instrument for doing work (karma); prayer and meditation (japa and dhyana) will purify your intelligence and make it an instrument for winning grace, and ultimately attaining self-realisation.

People today tend to be naive in their actions. They go after nondescript preceptors and seek messages from them. When the preceptors are themselves wallowing in bondage, how are they going to free you? How can someone filled with delusions themselves rid you of your delusions? Some people are constantly seeking some spiritual messages (mantra). What is the mantra you need? It is the understanding of your true nature. This mantra is in you. Everyone within has the mantra, tantra and yantra (the spiritual message, the method of practicing it and the instrument for implementing it). Your process of breathing verily contains the mantra you need: So-Ham (I am That). What is the yantra (the instrument)? Your physical body! What is the tantra? Your heart! When you have all the three, why go to anyone for a message? It is a sign of weakness and ignorance. Do not go in search of Gurus.

Today we are celebrating Guru Poornima. The day is usually observed as an occasion for offering worship to the Guru (the religious or other preceptor). There are eight different types of gurus, who impart spiritual instructions of different kinds. Among these, the really important guru is "Vihitha Guru", the preceptor who removes the doubts in the minds of the disciples and reveals to them the process of Self-discovery and Self-realisation. The guru should destroy the darkness of ignorance (about one's Reality) and illumine the mind of the disciple. The illumination must result in the perception of the One Reality that is beyond name, form and attributes. No purpose is served by going in search of gurus. There is a guru in each of us. It is the Atmic principle. It is the Eternal Witness functioning as Conscience in everyone. With this Conscience as guide, let all actions be done.

You must use your wealth for supporting educational and other institutions to help the people. Give food to the starving. This is the way to lead a purposeful and sublime life. Life has been given to you not to become fat yourself. The body is the basic instrument for the practice of righteousness (Dharma). Dedicate your entire time to service and for the proper discharge of your duties. God alone can transform your spiritual efforts into a transcendental experience. God is omnipresent; He is everywhere and within you. You are Divine! Ensure your spiritual practices (Sadhana)are not for any selfish reason. It must promote the good of others. Firstly, you should make an attempt to make good use of the mental and physical strengths that have been gifted to you. If you are so lazy as not to use the mental and physical strengths you have, what will you do with divine strengths? Just because God gave you enough food, for you to expect that God must help you in transferring this food to your stomach is indeed a lazy idea. But all the while her attention is on the baby, and her thoughts are always about when the baby would wake up. Even if she is engaged in an urgent and pressing work, her attention is on the baby, and as soon as she hears the cry, she comes running. She does not wait to analyse in what tune (raga) and tempo (tala) the baby is crying. Just as the mother comes running as soon as she hears the baby’s cry, so also, when a person cries to the Lord from the depths of their heart, the Lord responds instantly and helps every devotee. God does not ask what path this devotee is adopting or what bhajans are being sung to call Him, etc. But He looks for the sincerity with which the devotee has cried out.

They believe in things they have not seen and consider what their ears hear to be true. A blind person is in darkness and when he denies there is light, do we need to attach any value to his denial? No! On the contrary, you see a plane zooming in the sky; someone tells you that it is flown by a pilot, but you refuse to believe because you do not see him from where you are. Is this appropriate? Isn’t it reasonable to guess that a flying plane must have a pilot? If you want to verify, you must get to the plane and see the pilot! It would be unwise to deny his existence standing on the ground. So too seeing the Universe, you must firmly believe in the existence of God, and not deny His presence because you have not been able to see Him.

Some people may think that this light came from several sources. That is incorrect. The single source of light fell on a large number of coloured glasses, and hence appeared as if it is composed of different colours. If the same light falls on the ground, we would not be able to see the light, because the ground obstructs and absorbs the light. In the same manner, if the brilliant shining grace from the Lord falls on a sattwic (pure) person, he/she will shine brilliantly. If the same grace from the Lord, falls on a person with rajasic(aggressive) qualities, it will make him/her develop several desires of the world. If the same grace falls on a person withtamasic (dull) qualities, it will not only go through without having any effect, but also might lose some of its lustre.

People nowadays do not seek these, nor do they try to learn how to get them! The top spins perpetually and has no rest; people too pine and labor forever and ever, and have no relief from the spinning. The only peace and joy they get now are momentary; here now, gone the next minute. Pain puts a stop to joy; joy is but the absence of pain. Why must one live for years as a burden on earth, consuming so much of rice or wheat year after year, with no return in joy or peace to himself or others? The petromax light will shine bright only when you pump air vigorously; your light too is dim and well nigh out; pump vigorously, that is to say, engage yourself in spiritual practice and illumine your mind better and spread light on all who come near you.

Even casual acquaintances you meet in public places such as trains, airports or buses, you ask them about their family affairs, their property, and lineage. But do you know your own lineage, property, your heritage and status? You are Manuja, meaning, born of Manu, the person who laid down the moral code which is your property and inheritance. You have the Lord installed in your heart and so, you are essentially Divine. You deny all this precious wealth and go about announcing you are poor and weak in spirit! Is it the truth that such a big tree is contained in such a tiny seed or is it just our illusion? We know it is a truth. The seed is in the infinitesimal form and when we put it in the earth, feed and nourish it, it sprouts, grows and becomes big. The fruit, flowers and the leaves - all come out of this tiny seed. In the same manner, in this huge body of yours, there is an infinitesimally small seed called the Atma. If you give it nourishment, and let it grow and prosper, then it will show the Divine form of the universe. But where should we put this seed, how do we protect it and promote it to grow into a big tree? Can we put this seed in our palm and pour water on it? A seed will become a tree only if it is put in the soil and watered suitably. Even in that soil, if you put the seed too deep or too shallow, it will not become a tree. In the soil of our heart, if we can put the seed of God’s name, and foster it with the water of love, it will sprout into a good tree.

Do not merely boast that you have mastered the Bhagavad Gita (scriptures), read it a hundred times over, and memorised all the slokas and the commentaries written so far. Among all the millions who were taught the Gita, Arjuna alone had the realisation that this Universe is but a partial manifestation of His immeasurable glory (Vishwarupa Darshana)! Why is it that these great scholars had no such experience? Realisation of that reality can come only to the aspirant who deserves it. Arjuna reached the highest stage of surrender when the teaching started and during the process, he had unexcelled concentration. No wonder he was blessed. Unless you have the same degree of surrender, the same yearning and concentration, how can one expect the result that Arjuna attained? The path of surrender (Saranagathi or Prapatti), that the Gita lays down is not easy; it requires dedication and persistence.

Men will bear the difficulties somehow, why don’t you remain here and take care of old Dhritarashtra and Gandhari?” The Pandavas had asked Draupadi to take care of the two main people who were cruel and in fact were responsible for their having to go to the forest. This is a very great quality in the Pandavas, and we must learn a lesson from this conduct. The moral here is that whatever has to happen in one’s life will happen, but to take such inevitable events and use them to promote hatred is incorrect; it is not good human character. The misfortunes, troubles and pain we experience are not arising externally, nor are they God given. They are the result of our own actions. It is only as a result of one’s own weakness, that one blames someone else for one’s troubles and misfortunes. This is not a right attitude.

Once the Atma is cognised, you will find that all is really One. This is the goal prescribed by the scriptures of this land. But the children of this sacred land have neglected it and are today struggling in the quagmires and cesspools of faction and fear. When the four bulls that grazed in the jungle were united and watchful of each other's safety (for they felt they were all one) the tiger dared not approach them; but, when discord broke them and created out of the ‘one’, four separate individuals, they were attacked one by one, and devoured by the tiger. That is the fate of those who feel separate. Know that though vyaktis (individuals) may be separate, the shakti (power) is one; that Shakti is the Paramatmatattva (principle of the supremeAtma). This is the message that I bring. This message surely is hitha(beneficial), though it may not be priya (pleasing). Realising this truth, respect all, love all and give joy to all. Then you become God! When you recognise the fact that Divinity in all is the same, there would be no sense of duality. You may think that it is very difficult, but it is extremely simple. Your inability to recognise this truth is due to the fault of your vision and not the Creator. Correct your faulty vision and perception; see the unity in diversity. In this world, there is a constant strife between good and evil. Many people are jealous of others and subject them to slander. But do not attach any importance to such criticism. Praise and abuse are common to mankind. Several noble people faced similar difficulties and overcame these with fortitude. That the great variety that we see around us is coming only as a result of the change in our own qualities (Gunas) is a truth that is asserted by the sacred texts. You are sometimes very happy, sometimes afraid, and at other times courageous. These changes come about in quick succession and in a casual way. The main reason for all these changes is the change that comes in our own mental attitude. These are manifestations of one’s own qualities. Man has three distinct qualities or gunas - satwa, tamo, and rajo gunas. If these are mixed in a balanced manner, there will be no drastic change in one’s nature. Sunlight is composed of seven different colours. When these colours are mixed in appropriate proportions, there will be no change, and the Sun will shine in its natural colour. On the other hand, if there is an imbalance in the manner in which these colours are mixed, then you will find that some special colours show themselves.

Our great leaders made great sacrifices and secured freedom for us. While we have attained Independence, unity has not been achieved. What is the use of freedom without unity? There is hatred everywhere. If this kind of disunity persists, how can hard-won freedom be safeguarded? People are not treading the right path. You must adopt the path of complete unity, so that every citizen (Bharatiya) must be able to say proudly, “This is my beloved country; this is my mother tongue and my religion.” You should also uphold the reputation and traditions of your family. There are many who chant the sweet name of Lord Rama, but is there anyone who actually practices the virtues Lord Rama represented? Lord Rama said, “Mother and motherland are greater than even paradise” (Janani Janma Bhumishcha Swargadapi Gariyasi). You must recognise and live by this truth.
