Indian cricketers, generally, stay away from controversy as mega bucks are involved. Some exceptions like Sreesanth lose everything getting into controversies. The others know that.
He didn't play for the country for free. He got paid and in multi crores. Indirectly, we paid him.
I am not questioning his qualification for the BR. But my point is that are others, who are/were equally talented but never got the publicity because they did not play cricket. Of the many many crores he got out of cricket including contracts with sports goods manufacturers, brand ambassadorship for products, commercials, has he contributed anything to the country? A hospital for the underprivileged or a primary school in rural areas, an orphanage for senior citizens - some such public service would have made him and the country proud. There would have been no controversy whatever may be the timing.
