Ramayana as we all know, stands tall-one of the greatest epics in Indian history. It is very important that the immense values & insights that Ramayana has garnered to its readers are passed on to genrations to come as well.
At this juncture, it would be good to clarify on the origin of Ramayana, that of Valmiki's composition.
Was it a real string of incidents passed on to us through Valimiki?? or was it from some divine vision that kindled
him to compose?
Please do share your valuable thoughts on the same. Thanks in Advance!!

I would feel its a combination of both..real string of incidents passed on to us through Valmiki and also Divine Vision that kindled Him to be able to reproduce what had happened.

If the Geeta is described as below:

The Upanishads are the cows milked by Gopāla, the son of Nanda, and Arjuna is the calf. Wise and pure men drink the milk, the supreme, immortal nectar of the Gita.

I would like to describe the Ramayan as Raama Rasaayan in a Akshaya Patra that still flows in the rivers of our mind composed by Valmiki who still steals..but this time He stole our hearts away.

What great Maharishis like valmiki wrote cannot be and should not be doubted or questioned by ordinary fellows (like us) who don't have even a very small fraction of their spiritual ability. If a maths teacher puts a question like "if one bag of rice costs 17.50 rupees, how much will be the price/cost for 35 bags of rice?", the students are expected to learn how to find the answer, how to multipli 17.50 by 35, etc. They are not supposed to argue whether the rice price is real and all that.

Similarly, we have to learn the lessons from the ramayana and worship rama and sita. also, hanuman.

We cannot doubt the great sage or the authenticity of his work, however there are several other factors that need be considered while decoding his works.
Socio-economic structure prevalent at that time as one primary reason on his view.
Focus on the energy force of Rama and dedication to his life, can give a person the glimpse of Rama's life.
Alwars and many others have written Ramayana sequences that were not a part of Rama's life from Valmiki.
There is an interesting book that is coming into the market called I, Rama, King of Ayodhya which talks of Rama's life from his own view. Divine knowledge is available for those people who seek spiritually, but historic is only on stone.
Isolating those two threads, one can find the reality vs perception.
Why not Rama's life be read from the know-how of today's knowledge ?

As a starter, Rama avatara was in the treta yuga, more then 8 lakh years ago. So dating ramayana to 4000 or 5000 BCE is not correct. We believe in a cyclic system; so dates arrived at with astronomical calculations will not be correct.
