Query on Tharpanam

hello all,

I live in an apartment and i have a question on tharpanam.

After we do tharpanam - What should we do with the yellu in the water.

I am asking because - the priest in my village told me - you should not pour the water and yellu (til)
into mud or ground. it should be put in the terrace (motta maadi) for birds.

A friend told me that he puts it inside a pot.

So, my question - What should one do?
