Ailing state-owned telco BSNL has sent an SOS to the governm ..

JJ ji,

The caption of the thread is so apt.

It is reported that we had just five public sector undertakings during 1951, and with increasing years, the list seems to start growing and now we have more than 300 public sector undertakings.

Among the above 300, it most of the public sector undertakings, there is no expertise and are unable to compete with private enterprises.

They are making loss continuously every year and thus dragging our economy down

DATA shows that among the 50-60 PSUs, BSNL, Sir India, MTNL and Hindustan Photo Films are huge loss-making Units.

And it is a same story with Public Sector Banks which are bleeding…

And no Government had the required guts to close down such loss-making Units, though we had Financial Experts as PM once.

பூனைக்கு யார் மணிகட்டுவது ..??

Lack of progress in technology is one thing, more than that cost, the salary and other expenses. The private can cut it down any time. In government they can't do. "One works very hard to get a government job, after joining he works hardly

They are never customer friendly - leading to their loss of customer base as well! By RBI Guidelines RTGS and NEFT fund transfer are free services from today But IOB has debited around Rs. 5 to my account for the fund transfer by NEFT I just made - fund transfer charges!

Most of the comments are just one side of the story. The PSUs will be profitable if they are allowed to function as commercial enterprises. The government of the day routinely interferes in the functioning of these units, right down to the smallest of issues. The forcing of the buying of planes for air india and its aftermath on the balance sheet of air india is a glaring case. The merger of the Indian Airlines and Air India, both of them profitable before merger, forced them into a loss with huge wrangling amongst the employees. BSNL and MTNL have not been allowed to upgrade the infrastructure. In days of 5G, the Govt ( mostly controlled by private businesses) has not even allocated 4G spectrum to these companies. How do you expect them to give you the fastest network. moreover, an airtel or a vodafone is not forced to provide telecom infrastructure in places you may not even have heard of. Then ministers like maran will get high speed ISDN lines layed solely to benefit SUN TV. The most profitable airports of the Airports Authority of India are given away to private bidders and the AAI itself is asked to build airports at nondescript places in the name of RCS (UDAN) which later have to be maintained without any flights operating to them. The mining companies given away to private bidders are exploiting the natural resources and causing huge damage to the ecology and no one is bothered.

The basic fact that is lost is that the PSUs should be allowed to run as business enterprises which is not the case. Independent and prudent decision making is hardly ever possible with the harassment of vigilance and the interference of the concerned ministry even in day to day affairs. The best airports in the world Changi HongKong Dubai Abu Dhabi and even airports in Pakistan are government owned, and this should be example enough to let PSUs run on their own.

The comment that people in PSUs hardly work is pretty ill founded. Most of you would be surprised that the fourth largest airspace in the world is managed incident free by personnel of a PSU AAI. The Best Communication Navigation and Surveillance equipments in this country are again installed maintained and commissioned to International standards by the employees of this very same PSU. And these employees work 24X7, 365 days a year in graveyard shifts too. When you enjoy a holiday on your favourite festival or a new year, these guys and of course gals are at their working best in their work positions.
Your experience with the lazy clerks at public contact places of govt departments particularly Tamil Nadu cannot be generalized.
