To B V Raagavan : you are totaly changed the real OM(AUM) conveniently towards vaishnava siddhantha. But dont explain according your own version since OM is a Sound self Birth and nothing to do with Narayana are Vishnu. OM ment for SUDDHA SIVAM and Sakthi so it is called PRANAVA Manthiram. s.r.k.

The answer to the question is simple Yes. There is "upanayanam" to Chettiyars who come under the category of Vysia Varna. But Nagarathar (Nattukottai Chettiars) do not follow this. Those who come under Khashtriya Varna like Naidu, Velama, Raju, Mutharayar (Muthiraja) and Vahnikula Kshathriya also wear Poonool. Many others belonging to artisan castes like Achary, Karuman, Sthapathy, Weavers (Pattunoolkarar and Jedar) also wear Poonool. Even there are some sects of Karuneegar (Kanakku Pillai), Mudaliar and Udayar wear Poonool during their Marriage. Now members of many of these Castes have left this practice.

Brahmanyan.

Sir,

As far as I know, all those belonging to the first three varnas are dwijas, and hence are entitled to upanayanam and yagnopaveedam.

Swami

Yes, At the time of taking Sanyas all external appendages identifying Caste and Community are discorded.

I quote Sanyasa Sukta from Mahanaranopanishad (4.12) here under, which is generally recited as Guru Vandana at the end of all Vedic Ceremonies:

'Na karmana na prajaya dhanena tyagenaike amrtatvam anasuh/
parena nakam nihitam guhayam vibhrajate yad yatayo visanti /
vedanta-vijnana suniscatartha sannyasa yogad-yataya-suddha-sattvah /'
te brahma-loke tu paranta-kale paramrtat-parimucyanti sarve /
dahram vipapam parame’ sma bhutam yat-pundarikam pura-madhya sagmstham /
tatrapi dahram gaganam visokas-tasmin yad antas tad upasitavyam /
yo vedadau svarah prokto vedante ca pratistatah /
tasya prakrti-linasya yah para-sa mahesvarah //

Meaning:

Immortality is not obtained through action, or begetting offspring or wealth. Some attain that state through renunciation.

The Sages (that have conquered the senses), attain that Sat, which is more supreme than Heaven and shining all alone in the Heart.

The adepts, who by renunciation and one-pointedness are pure in heart and have known the certainty of Truth by the special knowledge proclaimed by Vedanta, get fully released in the Brahmaloka from the causal Maya at the dissolution of the body.

That alone which shines as the tiny Akasa void of sorrow in the lotus Heart, the tiny seat of spotless Supreme in the inner core of the body is worthy of worship.

He alone is the Supreme Lord, who is beyond the Primal Word, which is the beginning and end of the Vedas and in which merges the creative Cause.

Dear Sri Swami,

You are correct, that is what I have also heard and read. But the fact is that many belonging to artisan Caste are wearing Poonool. We have our Grama (kula) Deivam in Perungalur, near Pudukkottai known as Ayyanarappan (Malayappa Swami) temple, where I have seen the Poojari belongs to Padmatthaar Caste is wearing Poonool.

This is a subject that needs indepth discussion to understand more.

SV sanyasses wear poonal. They have a small white cloth tied to their tridandam that they use for Gayatri japam, yes, they do three sandyavandanams a day besides Bhagavat Aradhanam. These SV sanyasees are not supposed to even set their eyes upon a Brahmin sanyasee sans poonal. A few years ago when Srimat Azhagiya Singar met Kanchi Sankarachariyar he came under some muted, but severe criticism from the orthodoxy.

Cheers!
