The amendment to the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage act - introducing "Irretrievable Breakdown" as ground for divorce will save a lot of delay and harassment (The Hindu). In response to this in a letter to the editor(June 16) V.M. Khaleelur Rehman of Ambur writes it is welcome & also claims it to be based on rational thinking and in accordance with the Islamic law Is this as simple as suggested by Shri. In theory this amendment will enable a husband (or wife) to stay away from the spouse, claim that there is irretrievable breakdown of marriage and then make a plea for divorce. In practice it will depend to a very large extent on how the Supreme court implements the law.

In any case, one thing is clear - marriage is becoming more a civil contract to live together than a sacrament with some esoteric shades involved in it. In that respect Shri Rehman is correct because Islam sanctioned the contract point of view but the right was purely one-sided, only for the convenience of males, I suppose, and not enforceable by woman.
