New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry has approved a proposal to set up water aerodromes in the country, and has identified Chilika Lake in Odisha, Sardar Sarovar Dam and Sabarmati River Front in Gujarat in the first phase for the development of such facilities, an official said on Saturday. The proposal was cleared by Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu on Friday.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had, in June, issued regulations on procedures and requirement for licensing of water aerodromes. Since there is no historical data, the project will be done on a pilot basis, according to a ministry official. The development will pave the way for operation of amphibian planes (both in land and water) to enhance air connectivity.
Under the proposal, water aerodromes will be set up near tourist locations and places of religious importance. “In the first phase, Chilika

Lake in Odisha, Sardar Sarovar Dam and Sabarmati River Front in Gujarat have been identified for the development of water aerodromes,” said the official quoted above.

The day M K Stalin was born, his father Muthuvel Karunanidhi, then an emerging DMK leader, was at a condolence meeting for Joseph Stalin. As someone informed him about the birth of his second child from his second wife Dayalu Ammal, Karunanidhi instantly named his son after the Soviet Communist leader. This DMK fable is not without the contradictions that such lores are allowed — Stalin was born on March 1, 1953; the Soviet leader died four days later.

M Naganathan, one of Karunanidhi’s closest friends, who taught economics at the University of Madras and who accompanied the late DMK leader for his morning walks for about 25 years, is fond of recounting this story. Talking to The Indian Express the day Karunanidhi travelled out of Chennai for the last time — to address rallies in a few northern and central districts ahead of the April 2016 Assembly elections — Naganathan also compared Karunanidhi’s stand on his successor to that of another Communist leader, China’s Mao Zedong.

Telangana attracted Rs 10000 crore investment in life sciences: Minister

Hyderabad: Telangana's life sciences sector has attracted Rs 10,222 crore in investment during the last four years, including Rs 3,000 crore in research and development, Industry Minister K.T. Rama Rao said on Sunday.

Since January 2015, when the state passed announced TS-iPASS, a new system for industrial clearance, about 700 investment proposals in life sciences sector were approved. These include more than 100 R&D proposals.

According to a statement from the Minister's office, 80 per cent of these projects have already commenced project execution. These envisage about 20,000 high value R&D jobs and around 50,000 manufacturing jobs in the state.

Kerala rains: Rajnath Singh announces Rs 100 crore immediate assistance for flood affected areas

After conducting an aerial survey of rain-hit districts, Rajnath Singh said, “I understand the sufferings of the people of Kerala from the present crisis. Since assessment of damage would take time, I am announcing an immediate relief of additional Rs 100 crore."

UNION HOME Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday announced an immediate assistance of Rs 100 crore for rain-ravaged Kerala even as the state estimated its loss at Rs 8,316 crore. After conducting an aerial survey of rain-hit districts of Idukki and Ernakulam districts along with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister of State K J Alphonse, Singh said, “I understand the sufferings of the people of Kerala from the present crisis. Since assessment of damage would take time, I am announcing an immediate relief of additional Rs 100 crore.”

“The Centre is closely watching the flood situation and providing all possible assistance to Kerala state. We will leave no stone unturned to mitigate this unprecedented disaster. I have come to know that it was in 1924 that Kerala faced such a big calamity. I appeal to all political parties to join hands with the state government to mitigate the sufferings of the people,” he said.

Chennaiites join hands to help Kerala flood victims

Chennai: While there have been several incidents illustrating the hospitality provided by Tamilnadu people, the State, yet again, stands first in lending a helping hand to help the Kerala flood victims.

With flash floods and sudden unprecedented rains taking the death toll to 39 with eight drowning in four days in Kerala, the rain-ravaged State has faced tremendous loss.

Understanding the necessity, the Union Minister Rajnath Singh has announced an additional relief of Rs 100 crore. Reports suggest that the total number of people stranded in relief camps in the State has come down to 35,874 on Friday.

As a gesture to show gratitude to the State who helped Tamilnadu during the 2015 floods, several organisations -- both NGOs and private firms from the city, have started collecting relief materials to aid the people of Kerala. In conversation with News Today, the good Samaritans share their plans of helping the state bounce back to normalcy.

Sabarimala cordoned off as Pamba river overflows due to opening of dams


Pilgrims traveling to Sabarimala have been instructed to not visit the temple as the river is flowing in full spate in the region.

The holy Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala will temporarily remain inaccessible to pilgrims following the flooding of the Pampa Triveni bridge. The bridge due was submerged due to water gushing from the opening of two dams due to heavy downpour in the district.


The shutters of the Kochupampa and Anathode - Kakki dams (which provide water to the Sabarigiri Hyderoelectric Plant) in Pathanamthitta district were opened due to rising water levels.

[h=1]Madurai HC directs CBI to probe Thoothukudi firings[/h]Chennai: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today ordered CBI investigation into the Thoothukudi police firings that killed 13 people who were protesting against the Sterlite Copper smelter plant.

The case was earlier handled by the Tamilnadu police.

The court also dismissed the cases registered against six members of Makkal Adhikaram organisation, booked under the National Security Act in connection with the protest.

A two-judge bench consisting of Justices Basheer Ahamed and C T Selvam passed the order after hearing more than 15 PILs requesting a CBI probe into the firings and alleged police brutality on the 100th day of the anti-Sterlite protest that killed 13 people and injured over 100.

A total of 173 FIRs were registered on the protestors on 22 May and several people were arrested.

The PILs put forth many requests to the court like providing adequate compensation for the protestors who were illegally detained by the police, additional relief measures to the family of the 13 people who were killed, request for murder cases to be registered against top Thoothukudi district authorities including Collector and suspension of police cases against registered against more than 100 protesters.

In view of the worst devastation in nearly a century suffered by Kerala due to rains and floods, the government on Tuesday cancelled this year's Onam celebrations, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced.

The harvest festival is celebrated across the state.

The Kerala government, which had earmarked Rs. 30 crore for the cultural events to be held all across the state, decided to divert that amount to the Chief Minister's Distress Relief Fund.

The week-long festivities were to take place in August -- with the Thiru Onam falling on August 25.

"What has occurred in our state has been the worst ever (disaster). A total of 444 villages have been affected.

"The money set aside for Onam will be used for relief. We seek everyone's help in our efforts," Mr Vijayan told the media after a cabinet meeting.

Kochi Airport Shut Till Saturday, Flights Diverted to Calicut and Thiruvananthapuram

The Civil Aviation Ministry acceded to the state's request to utilise other airports in Kerala, instead of diverting the flights to Mumbai and other places.


Kochi/New Delhi: The Cochin International Airport on Wednesday suspended all flight operations till Saturday as the aerodrome was flooded following unabated rains and the opening of dam shutters in the Periyar river, prompting authorities to divert all incoming and outgoing flights to Thiruvananthapuram or Calicut.

The Civil Aviation Ministry acceded to the state's request to utilise other airports in Kerala, instead of diverting the flights to Mumbai and other places.

The 10th Prime Minister of India had been suffering from kidney-related ailments.

Former Indian Prime Minister and senior BJP politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee has passed away at the age of 93 in New Delhi on Thursday.

A statement from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi said, “It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 05: 05 pm on 19.08.2018."

The 10th Prime Minister of India had been suffering from kidney-related ailments and was admitted to the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi from June 11.

According to a health bulletin released by the hospital on Wednesday, the nonagenarian’s condition was critical.

"Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted for the last 9 weeks at AIIMS. Unfortunately, his condition has worsened over the past 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life support system," read a statement from Dr Aarti Vij, Chairperson of the Media and Protocol Division of the hospital.

Over the past couple of days, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani, Congress President Rahul Gandhi and other senior parliamentarians and leaders have visited the ailing leader.

44,000 crore freight corridor on east coast in the works


The Indian Railways plans to invest 44,000 crore to build a 1,100-km greenfield freight corridor on the east coast connecting Kharagpur in West Bengal with Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh.

Once operational, the corridors will increase the national transporter freight carrying capacity to over 2,000 million tonnes, up from the existing 1,200 million tonnes.

The corridor, which is expected to carry about 200 million tonnes of freight per annum, is likely to be announced in the budget proposal for 2019-20. “There is very heavy traffic on this route. The work on the proposal is currently going on,” said Anurag Sachan, MD at Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC). “We wll be proposing funding from multilateral agencies along with some equity from Indian Railways for the project.” The corridor will connect mineralrich areas of the country to industries in the south.

The engagement was set to take place in Kannur, but both families decided that the money should be used to help Kerala get back on its feet.

As Kerala struggles to deal with the worst floods it has witnessed in a century, several heartwarming acts of help have come to the forefront - be it donations pouring in from across the country or people opening up their homes to strangers who are stranded by the floods.

In one such act of kindness, a journalist in Kerala cancelled his daughter’s engagement function and chose to donate the money to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund instead.

Considering the the distress the state is facing, Manoj, the resident editor of Deshabhimani, the CPI(M)’s mouthpiece, spoke to his daughter’s fiancé’s family, who agreed to cancel the engagement, scheduled to take place on Sunday in Kannur.

"The engagement and ring exchange of my daughter Devi and that of Advocate Sudhakaran, son Advocate Gokul, was scheduled for August 19. But considering the unprecedented natural disaster which Kerala has been facing, the function is being cancelled. We, both the families, have decided to donate the money set aside for that to the Distress Relief Fund of the Chief Minister,” a Facebook post written by Manoj says.

Cricketer-turned-politician and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan was sworn in as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan on Saturday in presence of several leaders and cricketers. The oath-taking ceremony was administered by President Mamnoon Hussain at the President House in Islamabad.

Those in attendance include Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi, former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, Wasim Akram, actor Javed Sheikh, Punjab governor designate Chaudhry Sarwar, Punjab Assembly speaker Pervez Elahi, Ramiz Raja, caretaker prime minister Nasir-ul-Mulk, PTI leaders, Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Zubair Mahmood Hayat, and Chief of Air Staff Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan.

The election in the 15th National Assembly was held on July 25 and results were declared the next day in which Khan’s PTI emerged as the largest party securing 116 seats. Opposition parties Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 64 and
43 seats respectively. However, Khan did not have the majority to form the government as a total of 172 votes were needed for that in
the 342-member lower house of Parliament.

On Friday, of the total National Assembly members, 176 voted in favour of Khan, while his opponent, Shahbaz received 96 votes. Hence, making the way clear for the PTI chief to become the new PM.

[h=1]‘We found him sitting with his wife’s body’: NDRF men recall tragic rescue op in Kerala[/h]

NDRF personnel recount a distress call they received from Pothissery in Thrissur district of an aged couple, who needed immediate rescue.

As their bus surged forward in the flood waters that still inundated National Highway 47, people standing on top of buildings on either side of the roads waved at them. Their orange uniforms have become a familiar sight for many people in Kerala. People know that these are the heroes from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) travelling from one place to another to rescue those in distress.

But inside the bus, the mood is grim as the NDRF personnel recall the struggles of the last few days. On Friday evening, four members of this battalion from Tamil Nadu’s Arakkonam had undertaken a rescue mission that officer Biju says has scarred them deeply. A distress call from Pothissery in Thrissur district had said that an aged couple had to be rescued from a house that had completely flooded. The distress message also said that the wife may have died two days ago, but they were unsure.

"We tried different routes, but the current was too strong. Finally, by evening, the locals told us about a route. Four of us went on a rubber boat for around two km. Then we reached a dry spot and people in the taluk arranged a truck. We were taken to Pothissery which was again 2 or 3 km away," Biju recalls.

Bengaluru: Heavy rain leading to landslides and flooding continued to lash Karnataka's Kodagu district, chief minister HD Kumaraswamy said on Saturday.

"Rains have been causing massive damage in Kodagu. The state officials, along with Indian Army troops, Navy divers are carrying out rescue and relief operations on war-footing," Kumaraswamy told reporters in Bengaluru.

Kodagu is one of the districts in the southern state worst hit by the south-west monsoon rains since June first week. The landslides and heavy rain have claimed six lives in the district since Thursday, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), the district received a maximum rainfall of up to 25.3 cm and an average rainfall of 11.9 cm over the past 24 hours.

Located in the Western Ghats mountain ranges, the incessant rain has been causing landslips across the region, making rescue operations difficult.

On condition of anonymity, the expert said that currently the piped water supply in the city could be around 50 to 60 LPCD, which is quite minimal, the issue being the availability of water.

CHENNAI : 4,100 waterbodies, but metro still thirsty Chennai Corporation’s target was to provide 135 litres per capita per day (LPCD) of piped water supply by 2017 under the XIIth plan. But with the rising population and stress on water resources due to irregular monsoon, Chennai Metro Water is providing less than half, according to an expert.

On condition of anonymity, the expert said that currently the piped water supply in the city could be around 50 to 60 LPCD, which is quite minimal, the issue being the availability of water.

Barring the two desalination plants of 100 MLD capacity each, water in the four reservoirs — Red Hills, Chembarambakkam, Poondi and Cholavaram usually ends up in dead storage before the arrival of monsoon. While Metro Water is planning to have 750MLD of regular water supply from desalination plants, S Janakrajan, former professor of Madras Institute of development studies and President of South Asia Consortium for Inter-disciplinary water resources studies questions the idea behind it as Chennai is set to expand to 8,878 square kilometres.

“Do you know we have 4,100 waterbodies in Chennai. It has the largest rainfall (1300mm) when compared with Jaipur (600mm), Hyderabad (800mm) and Bengaluru (800mm). It is a water state and is a mega water shed. There is something seriously wrong if you are concentrating only on desalination plants, which if materializes will cater to two-thirds of Chennai. Somebody has to be penalised for overlooking waterbodies,” Janakrajan says.

[h=1]Rs 2 cr worth relief materials despatched to Kerala[/h]Coimbatore: More than 20 lorries carrying relief materials worth Rs 2 crore from all districts in the state was today flagged off to flood-ravaged Kerala.

With the Chief Minister announcing Rs 5 crore financial assistance to the Kerala Chief Minister's Distress fund again, the relief materials collected from all the districts in the states were despatched, Local Administration Minister, S P Velumani, who flagged off the vehicles here said.

Items like rice, dal, edible oil, sugar, salt, bread and biscuits and cooking materials, clothings, medicines collected from NGOs and other social organisataions were sent to the Waynad, Malappuram, Thrissur, Palakkad, Calicut and Ernakulam, he noted.

Relief materials are being sent from 10 districts including Namakkal, Tirupur, Dindigul, Dharmapuri, and Madurai, the Minister said.

Medical camps are functioning at places bordering Tamilnadu and Kerala for the benefit of those arriving there, he added.

Karnataka Minister flings biscuits at flood victims; Video goes viral

Bengaluru: Karnataka Minister H D Revanna courted a controversy after a video purportedly showing him flinging biscuit packets at flood victims in a relief camp in Hassan district went viral today.

Revanna, PWD Minister and brother of Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, was seen picking biscuit packets and hurling them at the people sheltered in the relief camp.

As the video clip went viral in the social media besides being aired by TV channels, netizens and BJP leaders termed Revanna's action as "insensitive."

Senior BJP leader S Suresh Kumar flayed Revanna for the act. "Dear Public Works Minister, throwing biscuits (at the flood victims) is not a public work... Is it the bloated ego, uncivilised behaviour... behind throwing biscuits?" he asked in a face book post.

Coming to the defence of his brother, Kumaraswamy said Revanna's act was not out of "arrogance."
