I have read that AdiSankara won a philosophical debate with the scholars of some North Indian king and the latter, in appreciation of Sankara, detailed a part of his army for the protection of the Acharya. The soldiers so detailed to protect Sankara, formed themselves into a few Akhaaras (akhaaDaas) which are arenas for wrestling and other physical feats which would keep those soldiers physically fit. After Sankara's time these people in the akhadas - all of which were Saiva then - took to the monastic way of life. Later on when Vaishnavism spread into North India, they (the Vaishnavites) also found it desirable to have a similar martial set up to protect and assist their holy persons/spokespersons in spreading the Vaishnava philosophy. The Sikh panth also followed suit and created their udaseen panth.

Thus there are now three types of Akhadas. I think the Shaiva akhadas are called Naga Sadhus. They may not have any historic connections with the Nagas of Nagaland or the snakes proper.

According to your logic, people with great grand children should wear five.
Then it will become Ther Vadam ( Chariot Rope).
In those days seeing great grand children was possible because of Balya Vivaham ( Chld marriage).

My family priest says all grahasthas must wear three sets of Punul irrespective of children or grand children.

What about those who had two or three wives (excluding the chinna veedu). Will they wear one each for each wife plus one each for each off spring?

I have heard from learned people that one is worn from the time of upanayanam, two from the time of marriage and the third is worn in place of the uttareeyam because a brahmin is not supposed to perform any task without wearing a dhoti and a uttareeyam. On those occasions when the uttareeyam acts as the Asanam to protect you from getting soiled, your third poonool takes the place of the uttareeyam and your yajna of taking food or any other task can be proceeded with. Otherwise you should wear what is called a third vastram which is called in Tamil as மூன்றாம் தளுவம் by elders.

Cheers.

If you have more than one wife you may pretend to be a non grahstha and throw out your punul!
You may say that you have gone beyond and entered sanyasam.
Many Ananadas show us the way!

If you feel guilty of taking off the punul there is a Second option :

Normally quality Punuls are thin. You may make it thicker by adding one fine thread for each wife.
No one is going to measure the thickness by using Vernier calipers.

For measuring thickness of very thin strings
the use of Screw gauge is more appropriate! :)

I wonder which man will like to reveal the
existence of his multiple wives (harem???)
to boast or boost his image and capability!!!

கில்லாடி = super specialist like Sachin in cricket, Viswanath in Chess and Bolt in Sprint. :first:

If any one says I am a கில்லாடி, I will take it is as a compliment!

I hope and pray that you too will take it in the right meaning I had really meant! :pray2:

they did not think of replacing :decision:
the keezh veshti also by an arai naaN or one more poonal!!!

One who does not have a arai naaN or kati Sutra is a nagnan (naked) according to Sastras. So there is no question of its replacing or coming there in place of another keezh veshti.

Cheers.

When does one wear four sets, twelve threads?

I think when you need an anchor rope to tie your boat. (just kidding) I do not have any answer sir.

கில்லாடி came from khilAri of Hindi/Urdu meaning a champion among players. அல்லாடி is a family name the root of which only a family member with that prefix can explain.

khel in Hindi = play

khilaadi = player and usually stands for distinguished players or champions!!! :first:

Are you Happy now???

WHY NOT REALLY???
If an additional poonal can represent an uththareeyam
an additional arai naaN can represent a kheezh veshti!!!

In sampradhaayam, any thing tied below waist or any thing taken from below waist is below par and can not be used for noble purposes. So arai naan is out and can never replace a uththareeyam. For the same reason when water is brought from river or well for Thirumanjanam (abhishekam) of a deity it is always carried on shoulder and never carried by hands hanging on a side like fetching it on a pail.

Cheers.

:ballchain:
