Greatest festival on earth Kumbhamela.

Newly initiated Naga monks are given Diksha by a Guru on the banks of Ganga.

London Swami Ji

Namaskaram. I am right here in Prayag and have being giving my little updates - nowhere comparable
to what you must already seeing/reading in the print and electronic media.

Request, let us keep all Kumbh related materials in Prasadji's thread - Harward Study........
This will enable us to find it all in one place.

Having a great time here - in the midst of all this mess - noise, filth, nudity etc etc etc.....

Guruvethunai

Yay Yem

This is news to me. They are given sacred thread at the time of initiation. And two sets like grihastas.

Before giving Sannyasa one has to be Made a Brahmachari or a Grahastha. That is the rule. Then he breaks the Sacred thread and throws it away on becoming a Snnyasi.

This is done by all Hindu Sannyasi orders including Ramakrishna Mission.

I was also surprised when I saw the Punuls. Our enlightened friends may throw more light on it. For those who wanted to see the photos enlarged, please click on them. More photos are available in London newspapers such as Daily mail.

Mass mundan ceremony...
Mass poonal ceremony...
Mass initiation of males of all ages ...
March by the langhoti clad sanaysis!!!

People can't throw off what they don't have.
So first they are made to have it ..the poonal.
Then they are told to throw it off...the poonal.

The principle behind these ceremonies is this.

To enter Sannyasa Ashram you have to give up your Purva Ashrama.

Without Upanayanam one does not enter into Brahmacharya Ashrama. So first his head is shaven and Upanayanam is performed making him a Brahmachari.

Many of them are already Grahasthas. So no new ceremony is required except an additional Upaveetham for making him a Grahastha.

Brahmacharis continue with only one Upaveetham.

It is new to me as well.
So they are all made "brahmins" even though they may be born "Sudra"?

Brahmacharis wear one poonul.

Grahasthas wear two poonuls.

Grand fathers have to wear three poonuls.

When men used to go around with bare body (topless),

this number would show his marital status and position in the family.

How many grandfathers do actually wear three??? :noidea:

dear sir !
nagas sadhu means naked sadhus and i had dharsan of them during 1977 kumbamela when i was in Patna.but you have given photos of sadhus in lankotti/i think they are not nagas.
guruvayurappan

I have published those naked Nagas pictures in my post :நிர்வாண சாமியார்களுடன் அலெக்ஸாண்டர்.
It is available in google images. Probably these Sadhus may undress themselves after initiation!
Wait and see.

Four.....off with the world (Moksha!!!)

Freedom from everything.

I wish this were true but sadly it can't be.

They still live in the world!

They still need food to keep their body and soul together!

They still need to sleep so as not to go completely mad!

But the fourth can be this without :argue: and :boxing:

Off with Samsaara ..since they have become sanyaasis. :)

But the mass initiation and steps

one..two..three. four does not :nono:

automatically assure/ ensure them Moksha

or nirvana (in addition to the one they already sport)

They still have to work very hard for total

liberation/ moksha/ deliverance/ nirvaana!

Brahmacharis wear one poonul.

Grahasthas wear two poonuls.

Grand fathers have to wear three poonuls. .......
I think the third is added when the first child is born and not when the grand child is born!

In some families never three pooNuls are worn. The number is either one or two!

I will have to get it checked!
But it makes more sense since
a bachelor wars one,
a married man wears two
and so one with children must wear three
and may be one with grandchildren must wear four!
Then there will be no confusions as to marital status and
family position of the male member.
