Mitr my friend, directed by revathi, ex Malayalam actor, distant relative of yours truly.

After a great opening scenes, the movie falls flat.

The movie starts with oothukkadu venkata kavi’s ‘kuzhal oodhi’ – a prosperous tambram household poNN paarkkal, marriage to a USA software engineer, relocation to California, a baby girl, a loving doting hubby and apparently contented home life. This is the beautiful shobhana.

Move forward 17 years, and we have a teenage girl in the house, an indifferent husband wedding to long hours at work, and a stayathome mom, who for 17 years had spent all inside the house, catering to the needs of the hubby, daughter (big flaw in story here…but then it is only a story).

The new twist here, is that in order to find solace from the inevitable mother daughter conflict, and husband’s aloofness, through internet chat. There is this slight suspense here, as to who her regular chatterer friend is.. but even this is cleared very soon, leaving the movie with nothing but a few pale versions of bollywood theatrics.

What a let down, after a great start.

Shobhana won best actor national awards for this movie, which I would go along. The hero nasir Abdulla, familiar to everyone who sees any ad for any fashion wear past 20 years, is miscast as the tambram husband. He comes out cold, unfeeling and uptight – surely we are better than that as hubbies? :)

The teenage daughter acts her natural self, like all of us who have teenagers in north America know.

The weak link, is why it took 17 years for shobhana to leave home and start self fulfilling activities. Most tambram women landing on the shores of usa, cannot wait to assert themselves to improving their lot – education, activity, socialising etc. in this movie, even getting a drivier’s licence was an issue. But then it is only a story. Right?

3 :)

How lucky you are K sir to be able to boast of Revathi as one of your relatives. I'm a huge fan of hers and love her acting especially in Marupadiyum, Anjali and one of my all time favourites of hers, Mouna Ragam (which i can watch a gazillion times and never tire of. I guess it helps that I also adore Mohan and Karthik!)

I thought Mitr, My Friend was very good considering the fact that it was Revathi's debut film, as a director.

mitr may be a good average movie. but had potential to be a great movie. as a story nothing was wrong, it is just the histrionics and withering away of the plot towards the end...

it may be a good movie as a first effort, but in moviedom, a good movie can be produced first time ventured.. or even after several times, a famed director can slip.

Amala,

You know I am not fond of Revathi at all!! I find her like a female version of Vishu..where she is always trying to get a message across but ends up being boring finally.Somewhat always trying to be a "teacher" and trying to make a change but who wants to be a student when watching a movie?

Dont know why I could never really like any actress who displayed serious roles sorts.I still somehow like the ones who can run around trees and dance sorts cos they help us unwind and are less stressful to the mind to watch.

My mum loves Revathi.
You know who I liked in the 80's? I used to watch movies for the sake of item numbers and Silk Smita was my fav..I used to like Anuradha too..so I used to watch movies just to see item numbers.

I never really was fond of the 80's heroines..could only like Radhika cos she was funny, glamorous and had a star quality which most other heroines lacked.

Why a separate thread for this movie??
Oh! Ms. Revathi is Kunjuppu Sir's relative... :grouphug: . . . :thumb:

This is the 'distant relationship' people keep talking about all the time- in addition to one's own cousins twice removed and thrice removed ! :dizzy:

I am reminded of a joke where A introduces B to C as his
"onnu vitta friend!"

C is naturally puzzled since he has never heard of a friend being described this way!

On further questioning it was revealed that B had given A such a hard slap once that he had ever since been fondly labelled as "onnu vitta friend!"

Foot notes please, dear Sis!!

The Geni family tree has the 'once removed' and 'twice removed' concept.

Anyone can 'remove' a relative from their family tree and later on 'add' him / her to their tree. Action replay is also allowed!!

:juggle:

Revathy is Asha Kelunni and also seen as Asha Kelunni Kutty. I was told she belongs to the ezhava caste. Is this correct?

Yes Renu, i agree that Revathi was more of a serious actor. She was particularly good at tear jerking films/roles. She does that so naturally.

You know i only knew who Anuradha and Seema were recently. I watch one serial called Thangam and they both act it in and are slightly older and horizontally challenged. I was told these 2 ladies used to be very popular item number dancers in their heydays. I like Seema. Shes still very pretty from what I've seen now.

As an aside I also like Sripriya. I used to think she was a tambrahm. I wonder where are all our Sripriyas and Lathas today in Tamil movies. No "real Tamil" actresses anymore apart from Trisha it seems.

i think trisha is a tamil in name only. she went to church park convent i think, and in my days, those girls spoke a language peculiar to 'high class girls' - a combination of english, tamil, with dee and paa thrown in, with some hindi and french to impress the guys ;)

it was a shock to me, when i read that trisha's voice was dubbed in vinnai thaandi varuvaya - the dubber - chinmayi..

Accolades-pouring-for-Chinmayee-for-VTV-dubbing

cannot believe anything anymore :)
