Please tell me the difference between Krishana jayanthi and Gokulashtami. Iyar from Vishnu temple said yesterday Aug 13,2009 was gokulashtami and Krishna jayanthi is on next month, is that right? I am confused.

For us (Iyers), vittam kazhinjaettam naal gokulashtami. It means we are much concerned about the thithi. Iyengars follow Avani rohini. That actually comes this year, one month later. We celebrated avani avittam itself in AADI month this year. During, Agnatha vasa (mahabaratha), duryodhana found dharma a day before itself. But, dharma will say to him better you consult bhishma regarding this. He will be clarified then about circles of time. It is like that things will hapen sometime (this year everything has been changed). Even under normal circumstances, Gokulashtami (that is ashtami) and Shri jayanthi or pancharathra jayanthi (rohini) will mostly wont coincide. Might be they will come in succeeding days. Similar for Karthigai deepam also.

This is not correct. For Sri vaishnavas, both Rohini and Ashtami are important for determining Sri Jayanthi. The rules are quite complicated. One branch of Iyengars called Munithraiyas have a different rule from Thenkalai and Sri Ahobila Matam followers. Sri Krishna Jayanthi/Gokulashtami for all Sri Vaishnavas has already passed last month (Sep 11th and 12th).

Am sorry for that Nara. But the thing is mostly it won't coincide with Iyers. Am I right??? Might be a day after they will celebrate. Am not sure about the reason, if what you said is correct. There are a consecutive functions for this, Shri jayanthi, pancharathra jayanthi, Munithraya jayanthi (almost 3 different days they fall). I am not sure about the reason, if they are not differing from thithi and star.

Both the nakshthram and thithi are considered in the determination of holidays such as Sri Jayanthi and Sri Rama Navami. These do not coincide in the same way the original births of the Avatharas are described in the Ithihasapuranas. When there is no match between Nakshathram and Thihti, the rishis of yore laid down rules for determining when to celebrate these functions. Different rishis gave different priority to different aspects of the match. So we ended up with different rules of interpretation.

In addition, due to the fact these are based on lunar cycle and has to be reconciled to solar calendar, every 4 or 5 years we end up with about 60 days for one of the 12 chandramana months. This will happen if two amavasyas fall within the same sowramana (solar calendar) month. This is why Deepavali actually falls in November this time according to the Sri Vaishnava calculation. However, many are celebrating it in October itself.

Panchrathra Sri Jayanthi is what Thenkalais and Sri Ahobila Matam sishyas follow. Then there is munithraiya Sri Jayanthi. These two are usually in consecutive days, but occasionally will be on the same day as well. These are only two versions among Sri Vaishnavas. I don't know much about Smartha rules.
