If dowry is considered a social evil then why is it acceptable to demand alimony?


In India demanding dowry is illegal, but when the marriage breaks down is it reasonable to demand alimony ?

Before reading any further please make a visit to Vrindavan to personally see the condition of abandoned widows/women.

Dowry and alimony are apples and oranges and there can not be a fair comparison.

If you do not pay dowry you can still get your daughter married.

If you do not pay alimony your divorcee may be left to the mercies of nature or the society and may have to lead a condemned life for ever because many of these divorcees do not remarry for want of offers.

Alimony is for survival of a human being left in the lurch whereas dowry is for buying a luxury--may be a villa, a house a car or at the minimum a bike.

Dowry is demanded and taken by lousy, lazy males and their greedy parents whereas alimony is granted by law to poor helpless divorcees.

That is a helluva lot of difference.

When there is a paradigm shift of social conditions with regard to male and female, there will be no dowry or alimony. Of course dowry is different from alimony which are not inter-related. These laws are applicable to only well-to-do and half-well-to-do groups. In rest of the cases it will be decided on the pavements or alfresco notwithstanding the fact that everybody is a citizen of the Republic of India.
