One thing to think about is how did the brahmins as a group or class came to hold a high social status in the beginning?! To understand this, may be you have to study the evolution of priestly class. Everywhere the priestly class held a high social status even from the earlier shamanisric days. so this is not unique to Indian society.
In prehistoric societies, a shaman is perceived as one with some supernatural ability. May be he did something that could not be explained by others. May be he healed someone that others couldn't. May be he did something that people perceived as a miracle because science wasn't advanced enough to explain. An aura develops around him and people accord him high respect. Then when societies become complex more elaborate rituals evolve and the group that was tasked with carrying out these rituals became the priestly class.
You look at Egypt or Mesapotamia or Rome or Greece. Everywhere the priestly class enjoyed a high social status and were accorded great respect. So the brahmins who were priests in the beginning did not have to claim high social status. That was how societies evolved at that time. Over the time, priestly class controlled access to knowledge including religious knowledge and rituals etc which cemented their position in the social hierarchy. This aspect of priestly class enjoying high social status is not unique to Indian society.
Money and power rule the modern world. So rich people and politicians enjoy the highest status today.
