Hindu saints have been using copper vessels for thousands of years. They keep water in it for drinking purposes. When Aluminium vessels became cheaper and copper turned expensive people slowly moved away from copper. But Western countries are going back to copper. Hindus keep Ganga Jal (holy water from Ganges) for years in copper pots. They never go stale.

Read the latest news from British News Papers:

An Irish hospital is the first in the world to embrace the latest science by specifying hygienic copper door handles throughout in a bid to reduce healthcare associated infections such as MRSA, providing the best possible solid protection to its patients.

St Francis Private Hospital, a 140-bed facility located in Mullingar, County Westmeath, and its associated nursing home, St Clair's, made the decision after examining the compelling evidence from the clinical trial at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, which showed that copper surfaces such as taps, toilet seats and door push plates can reduce microbial contamination by 90-100%.

A hospital in Birmingham, Britain tried copper fittings and pens against MRSA (Medicine Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus). This bacterium Staphylococcus aureus can’t be killed by antibiotics.
About 80 percent of MRSA transmission comes through surface contacts so an 18 month trial found that replacing stainless steel fittings with copper can greatly cut infection. The clinical trial was conducted at Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham. Key surfaces such as door handles, push-plates, bath taps, toilet flush handles and grab rails were changed to copper. Even the pens used by the staff were of copper alloy.

MRASA lives for days on stainless steel but dies within 90 minutes on copper, tests at Southampton University found. Copper can also tackle the resistant bug Clostridium difficile and could even act as a defence against bird flu.

In Britain, 30 000 patients pick up infections in hospitals each year. At least 5000 are likely to die the cost to the NHS is estimated at £ 1 billion a year (Source : Metro News paper, London).

In non-ferrous metals copper is ruling the world. Any idea described above will push up copper prices. Alongside it will also lift the price of Tamarind. By the way, has anybody gone into the kitchen to find out how many copper bottom vessels are there - of course with the sized copper sheet at the bottom?

You are right. You wont believe this.People are stealing copper wires from the railway line cables. The trains are delayed because of this theft. This is happening in London!!!! Sometimes we feel that the situation is worsening here. I mean worse than India. Copper price and silver price are competing with gold now.

The copper may be bacteria resistant, but the lead in Iyyam is poisonous, and causes various health problem including mental retardation.
Lead poisoning (also known as plumbism, colica Pictonum, saturnism, Devon colic, or painter's colic) is a medical condition caused by increased levels of the heavy metal lead in the body. Lead interferes with a variety of body processes and is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems. It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is therefore particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. Symptoms include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability, and in severe cases seizures, coma, and death.

If you do not have iyyam coating, the copper would react with all the acids of the food, and would be ingested by us. I think you need to do more research before advising.

Long-term Ingestion of Copper
The human body is capable of processing large amounts of copper. This means that should you have an excessive amount in your body, you will easily be able to excrete it. Actual copper poisoning could occur if you have ingested over a long period, a food that was pickled in copper. The symptoms are headache, metallic sensation on the tongue, dizziness and constant thirst. However, a doctor can treat you for these conditions.

Water was stored in copper vessels, because the copper ions that entered the water had a germicidal effect. However it was later shown that the copper also caused liver and brain damage among some infants. It did not harm adults. The richer families in India stored water in silver vessels for the same reason. No physical harm was ever reported in families that used silver vessels. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, developed a spiral of silver. This spiral, suspended for 12 hours in a pot filled with water, killed all the bacteria in it. An analysis of the water with even the most sensitive instruments failed to show the presence of silver ions in the water. The method has now been recommended by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. It is a very cheap method, but unfortunately it has not been widely publicised.

Yes. Lead is poisonous and copper is not poisonous. But copper vessels must be cleaned every day or blue colour copper sulphate will deposit on them.

But I wonder how come Brahmin houses have EYA SOMBU (lead pot) or Eya Katchetti for rasam and kuzambu. What is the reason for such an unhealthy (?????!!!!!!) practice?

"Ignorance is not bliss". Just because we have been using it, or like the taste of it, or is written in scriptures does not make it right to use it now. We need to improve our data base everyday.

Copper ions are water-soluble, where they function at low concentration as bacteriostatic substances, fungicides, and wood preservatives. In sufficient amounts, they are poisonous to higher organisms; at lower concentrations it is an essential trace nutrient to all higher plant and animal life. The main areas where copper is found in animals are liver, muscle and bone.

Copper is mostly used as a metal, but when a higher hardness is required it is combined with other elements to make an alloy (5% of total use) such as brass and bronze. A small part of copper supply is used in production of compounds for nutritional supplements and fungicides in agriculture.

In pots and pans we can not use pure copper as it does not have the strength to hold up. So the so called copper vessels are all copper alloys and as such should not be used in puja. For puja only pure metal like Gold, and silver should be used. We have come to accept copper alloys as pure copper.

The health effects of lead have become much better understood since the middle of the 20th century. At one time, the metal was regarded as quite safe to use for most applications. Now lead is known to cause both immediate and long-term health problems, especially with children. It is toxic when swallowed, eaten, or inhaled.

Young children are most at risk from lead poisoning. Some children have a condition known as pica. They have an abnormal desire to eat materials like dirt, paper, and chalk. Children with pica sometimes eat paint chips off walls. At one time, many interior house paints were made with lead compounds. Thus, crawling babies or children with pica ran the risk of eating large amounts of lead and being poisoned.

Some symptoms of lead poisoning include nausea, vomiting, extreme tiredness, high blood pressure, and convulsions (spasms). Over a long period of time, these children often suffer brain damage. They lose the ability to carry out normal mental functions.

Other forms of lead poisoning can also occur. For example, people who work in factories where lead is used can inhale lead fumes. The amount of fumes inhaled at any one time may be small. But over months or years, the lead in a person's body can build up. This kind of lead poisoning can lead to nerve damage and problems with the gastrointestinal system (stomach and intestines).

Lead causes both immediate and longterm health problems, especially with children. It is toxic when swallowed, eaten, or inhaled.

Today, there is an effort to reduce the use of lead in consumer products. For instance, older homes are often tested for lead paint before they are resold. Lead paint has also been removed from older school buildings.

There is a procedure how to use copper utensils and what for you can use. Uncleaned vessel is harmful. I may not be able to lay hands on that info. Mostly it is used for storing drinking water with soaked in Tulasi at home. It heats faster and stay hot for long time.

Good conductor of heat and electricity in pure form. You get stainless steel pots with copper bottom to achieve optimum advantage.
