Very heavy rains indeed! Our IMD performance has been lacklustre! In comparison Tamilnaduweatherman has done a far better job

The Tamil Nadu State disaster management authority has advised citizens to stay indoors.

CHENNAI: The city received its heaviest spell of rain since the 2015 floods on Thursday evening. Weather blogger Pradeep John has predicted another spell of rain to hit the city within hours. The incoming spell of rain is going to be very intense, John said.

There was waterlogging in several areas and public transport was hit. Several commuters were stranded on the roads as rains led to traffic chaos.

So far the city has received 13.6cm of rainfall since evening. The Tamil Nadu state disaster management authority advised residents of Chennai to stay indoors.

The administration has ordered schools to remain closed on Friday.

Earlier today, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami appointed ministers to oversee rain relief work here and in neighbouring Kancheepuram.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised people living in lower areas to move to higher ground where people and animals can take shelter. People have been advised to avoid entering flood waters and if need be, use footwear. "Stay away from sewerage lines, gutters, drains, culverts, etc," NDMA tweeted.

Within a couple of hours on Thursday evening, several parts of the city including Nungambakkam, Saidapet, Neelankarai, Mogappair, Chromepet and Velachery received about more than 10cm rainfall. Northern parts of the city received relatively lesser rainfall. Weathermen have predicted more rain until the weekend.

Several arterial roads witnessed heavy traffic from 8pm, leaving commuters stranded.

Area cyclone warning centre director S Balachandran said, "A low pressure area has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka. This will bring heavy rainfall in the some of the southern and delta districts on Friday. Chennai will get one or two spells of light showers."

Southern and delta districts received heavy showers during the 24 hours from 8.30am on Wednesday to 8.30am on Thursday. Palayamkottai (Tirunelveli district) received 13cm rainfall, Tiruchendur (Toothukudi district) 9cm, Chidambaram AWS (Cuddalore district), Kelambakkam (Kancheepuram district) and Srivaikuntam (Toothukudi district) received 8cm each, Nagapattinam (Nagapattinam district), Cheranmahadevi (Tirunelveli district) and Vedaranyam (Nagapattinam district) received 7cm each. sivan

The IMD categorises rainfall between 2cm and 6cm as 'moderate' and rainfall between 7cm and 11cm as 'heavy'.

Since October, the city has recorded excess rainfall at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam. In the 14 hours until 10.30pm on Thursday, the city recorded 12cm rainfall at Nungambakkam. Ennore recorded 3cm rainfall, Madhavaram 2.5cm and Meenambakkam 9cm

If a one hour heavy rain leaves so many areas waterlogged, it is a real shame on the State Govt! :tsk:

We can NOT compare these showers with 2015 rains. We have had only a few heavy showers till now.

Our well, which is 20 feet deep, is only half full. Ground water is still so low in Sing. Chennai.

Actually, we need at least a few more showers to have enough water.

The ground in a reputed school in our area, looks like a swimming pool. Closed since Monday, for the whole week.

Reason: The ground was spread with quarry sand for about four inches and it does not allow water to enter the soil. :(

[h=1]As heavy rains in Chennai kill 8, IMD says intensive rainfall pattern is likely to continue for next 3 days[/h]
After torrential downpour claimed eight lives in Tamil Nadu and threw normal life out of gear across the state on Friday, the Indian Meteorological Department on Saturday said that the intensive rainfall patterns are likely to continue for the next three days.

Speaking to Firstpost, S Balachandran, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, IMD Chennai, said, “Two separate weather systems — one being the trough between south Andhra Pradesh coast and the Tamil Nadu coast, and the other being the upper air cyclonic circulation near Gulf of Mannar and Sri Lanka — are responsible for the current scenario.”

The combination of the two weather systems is causing the persistence of Northeast Monsoon over Tamil Nadu, he said.

“In the next 24 hours, widespread rainfall is expected along the state’s Bay of Bengal coast, and a few places might experience heavy rainfall. The regions adjoining the coastal areas will receive moderate rainfall, whereas we do not expect much rainfall activity in western regions like Coimbatore as the weather systems haven’t reached that part yet,” Balachandran said.

In Chennai, few spells of rain and thunderstorms starting Saturday evening are expected to hit the city, and some of these spells may be intensive, he said. “This first spell of the Northeast Monsoon will gradually subside by 6 November in Chennai, and sometime in the next three days in other parts of the state.”

Educational institutions have remained shut since 31 October in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts.
The intensity of the rainfall over the next day will be similar to what was observed in the last 24 hours, but the weather systems are expected to weaken after that period, Balachandran said.

In the last 24 hours too, the IMD official said that coastal regions received significant rainfall, and the intensity of the downpours decreased as one moved west on the map.

“Nagapattinam district received the highest rainfall — 27 cm — and Chennai received an average rainfall of 7 cm across the city on Friday,” Balachandran said.

Heavy showers battered several parts of Chennai, such as Mylapore, Foreshore Estate, Tambaram, Chrompet and Pallavaram.
A total of 10 IMD stations recorded heavy rainfall while two recorded very heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu over the past 24 hours, Balachandran said.

It seems to be much more than normal.

Thousands of people took refuge in relief camps as torrential monsoon rains flooded parts of Tamil Nadu, killing at least 12 people this week, the government said Saturday.

The weather department has predicted rain or thundershowers over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Monday. Districts like Villupuram, Tiruvallur and Tiruvarur continued to be lashed by rains.

Friday had brought a little respite
and the sun, but heavy showers had continued through the evening.

Commuters had a harrowing time due to delayed services of buses and trains and severe traffic snarls. Mild rainfall was recorded in some areas in the state, moderate in others and heavy in some pockets.

We cannot fully blame the administration here. Wells,Ponds, and other water bodies which used to store the excess water have gone. Trees which used to soak a lot of water is also become a thing of past. This is the price we are paying for the blind folded development. There is still time to think...

There is something wrong with this analysis. It is like saying that operation was successful but the patient died.

Who allowed the development? Whos pockets were lined for this development? Who allowed the ponds to run dry? Who allowed the trees to be cut?

We elected a government to manage these resources, what did they do? Is it not the government's fault?

Water conservation is government's job and the common public should support it.

We all should have been

Dr. Rajendra Singh is a well-known water conservationist from Alwar district, Rajasthan in India. Also known as "waterman of India", he won the Stockholm Water Prize, an award known as "the Nobel Prize for water", in 2015. Previously, he won the Ramon Magsaysay Award for community leadership in 2001 for his pioneering work in community-based efforts in water harvesting and water management.

But the successive government in TN did not care enough.

Dear Athimber Sir,

Why not blame the administration? Who gives permission to close the ponds and lakes, to build new apartments?

The 'Rain water harvest' program was mostly an eyewash! In most of the houses, it was NOT done properly. Our house is

on the 80 feet road, which was raised several times in the past three decades; the floor level of our house is just a few inches

above the road level! We had to raise the front portion of the plot to block the dirty water from the flooding road, entering our

house. So, all the rain water which falls in our plot is stored in the garden and charges our well first and distribute to other wells

in our area. In all other houses, the rain water runs to the road and goes away! Hence, we have the puNyam of providing ground

water to Sathya Garden!! :D

I don't say the Governments are not at fault. What I said was it is not entirely the Governments fault. Till very recently no permission was required to cut trees (may be some 15years back)within one's own premises. Same was the case with filling up Wells and ponds in any private property . I don't think people seek any permission to level water bodies in any private property even now. That's the contribution of we the general public towards ecological imbalance. Hope I made it clear now.

Athimber Ji,

I agree with you.

But would like to add that majority of general public just exercise their valuable votes by receiving a paltry amount with no consideration for the merit of the candidate.

In April 2017, Election Commission cancelled the R.K. Nagar by-election on the based on evidence of large scale bribing of voters by the ruling AIADMK (Amma) among other parties and candidates.
What can be expected from such candidates once they become Ministers…?

What reap what we sow.

There are a lot of areas where one can site the irresponsible behavior of a section of Chennaiites, who simple through the garbage on the road and not in the dust bin provided for that purpose by the Corporation.

It Is also individuals responsibility to help keep their city clean and hygiene.

Out of greed, construct multi storied apartments in low lying and flood prone areas.

BTW Who constructed a part of Air Port on the floodplain of River Adayar….?

Who constructed a sprawling bus terminal wholly over the Buckingham Canal for the Mass Rapid Transit System at Koyembedu…..?

hi

luckliy modiji's visit and rain saved me from returning to USA today.....no problem in airport...
