Guru pAduka stotram

Sri Sachidananda Shivabhinava nRsimha bhArati, the 33rd pItathipati of Sringeri mutt, a treasure of learning, who composed several slokas, ever immersed in Atma niStA, travelled all over India along with this guru composed Guru pAduka stotram after his guru.

pAdukA is treated as person’s ‘self’ identity across cultures, as synecdoche of the wearer. Hence we have sayings like ‘Think from other’s shoes, too big shoes to fill’ etc. Hence barathA placed rAmAs pAduka in throne.
Gurus’ pAduka is the very identity of a guru, lasting longer than guru’s mortal body itself. Hence it is addressed as ‘Shri’, & used to invoke his teachings in us.

The wealth that guru pAdukA stotram talks about is the knowledge with which we are able to live in a detached way. Guru imparts it.

This detached perspective is the boat in which we can cross the ocean of samsAra, is the water cloud that douses ills we face in our life, is true wealth and knowledge that makes us speak well.
Post Guru, the pAdukAs of Guru keeps us reminding of this knowledge that Guru imparted.

The very sight of Guru pAdukAs by bringing the memory of our guru and the teachings of detached living, inhibit our excessive desires, control them, inspires us in midst of our difficulties such that even Kings submit like ordinary people. It creates varied perspectives, keeps watch like eagle on snake, ensuring we don’t commit sins and shake us out of ocean of inaction.

The sight of guru pAduka, by invoking Hari bhakti, leads us on the path of detached living, peace and state of samAdhi.
It’s because pAdukas bear the Guru’s very ‘self’ borne in that body that lived for others with fiery eyes. Thus Guru’s self watches like eagle over our desire snakes (through the pAdukAs), gives us wealth of detached knowledge, awareness and leads us to our mokSa.
