Temple Sasthrigal ( priests ) have to take a shower if they have to relive themselves urgently!!
I wonder what would happen if there is no provision of Toilet cum bath room in Temple compound itself !!
The Sasthrigal has to run to his home for this purpose...
Any idea tbs garu ?

hi p j sir,
temple priests live very close to temple......i think some may some adjustment with nearest house to temple...i think no toilet
in closer to older temples.....in USA...all temples are provided beautiful toilets in the temples...in some temples there is separate
toilet for ONLY FOR PRIESTS....generally small kulam available in all temples....
i don't mean this to be deragatory or insulting in any sense whatsoever, and so please forgive me if you or the public find it so.
isn't it strange, that the priest (or anyone else tambram for that matter) is expected to bathe, ie purify the body, AFTER he has excreted the 'poison' ie the waste FROM the body. till that point, his body was abode to all those 'impurities' but he was considered 'pure'.
i do not understand that logic. i would have thought the person would be 'clean' after the execrement. and not before. same goes for urine.
extending it further, our body has so numerous poochis and puzhus, especially when growing up in india, it is a matter of fact. .. how are these considered among the orthodoxy?

The act of going to bathroom and touching private parts is unhygienic, So a wash is needed.
I do not know about orthodoxy part of it.
It might be to show the extent of cleanliness that they are expected to shover. In Bengal where water is not a problem, everybody used to bathe after going to the toilet (outdoor). It has changed since the advent of indoor toilets. Even today I have seen orthodox bengali women take shower after going to toilet and walk into house in wet cloths to change.

Dear Kunjuppu Sir,
It is said that less liquids and no solids are to be consumed after bath, during rituals / poojA. This is to avoid any visit to the
toilet, before the ritual or poojA is over. My great-grandma used to have a bath, if she happens to visit the toilet after bath and
before finishing her poojA. That is the rule of 'madi'. The idea may be because there might be some splashes on the dress!
And after bath another neat 'madi' dress is worn!
The 'poochi's and 'puzhu's are (by God's grace) not seen outside. After all human body is abode of impurities in all the nine 'vAsal's!
So, a bath will at least clean all the external impurities, if not the bad thoughts in the mind!!

considering the depth of our logic, the superficial cleansing of the skin, does not hold water, atleast to me. sorry to say.
one explanation given to me, but by a very prejudiced person, was that brahmins went more with the concept of ritual purity, rather than cleanse the dirt off our body.
this might explain, why we stil chombu ganga thanni and drink it. and also, we do prokshanam of holy water, after a ganapathy homam and such. so a few drops of water, sprinkled over the head, purifies the person, atleast in our concept of ritual purity.
still, theetu on seeing, fellow humans?

BTW, when I see the plight of toilets in the aircraft, where many mAmAs and mAmis are aboard, I think it is necessary to have a bath
after a visit to the toilet! I wrote once in forum that in my relative's house in West Virginia, during a function, I had to clean the toilet
each time I visited it, before using it, because the earlier visitors had soiled it so badly! I usually clean the toilets in my house before
head bath. But what can I do there? I had to grin and bear it. The idea of cleaning it is because I needed a neat seat!

Actually I wonder why ancients always only thought of males ..you see Nine Gated Abode is for a male body.
The female body is 10 gated.
So someone should correct this and make it gender specific or may be females did not really matter at all or the guys who wrote it never learnt human anatomy.
BTW some men are also 10 gated or more in cases of a Congenital deformity of the male organ called Hypospadias with Multiple Openings.

BTW the umbilicus (navel) is patent(open) while in utero and after birth it is open till the umbilical cord falls off.
So why is this orifice or ex orifice not included in the list?
So that means it can be 10 for man and 11 for woman.

I discussed this with a doctor of friend of mine and that doc said that women are 12 gated cos the breasts produce milk during lactation and its flows through 2 openings in the mammary gland.
I told that doctor I need to tell one Raji Madam this.
I think that doctor has a valid point!LOL

of late i have taken the BA flights london/chennai/london.
as a rule, i have found, even at the end of the long flight, the bathrooms in reasonable condition. except this time from chennai to london. for whatever reason, the crowd was unused to using western toilet and there were a fair number of mamis (accompanying daughters with infants).
not saying i attribute it to that, but one gets the concept of using water sparingly, and not sprinkling it all over the toilet, only in the west. afaik. indian bathrooms are still wet after use all over the floor and people accept it. no one even dreams of cleaning the wash basin after use and it remains messily wet till the maid cleans or it dries on its own.
this is always a dread for us, when we have visitors from india. they are so touchy that we cannot tell them anything. one literally flooded the bathroom, as he put the curtain outside the tub. and he was boasting about how well versed he was with western stuff. he is a big shot in india, and travels abroad a lot. i shudder to think of the lot of the hotel room cleaners after he has booked out. and he is not the type to leave any tips for cleaning. brings indians a bad name.
