According to the Grhya Sutras, this Samskara called Choodakarna or Choulam (குடுமி வைப்பது) should be performed for the child at the end of first year or before the expiry of the third year, but the later authorities extend the age to the seventh year. The child’s hair is shorn, frequently leaving only the śikhā or cūḍā, a tuft (குடுமி) at the crown of the head. In ancient days this is performed near rivers or water sources.
Choulam and ear piercing known as Karnavedha are important Samskaras for followers of Hindu (Vedic) religion.
