Doing pooja on srartham day

my first advice dont search for logic in our customs. elders have prescribed something for better only.
all are beliefs. have we seen GOD almighty. belief only. if you go behind logic, you will never come to a conclusion. either believe, dont believe. telling a still serious matter. Your mother is only true, she has given birth to you. Believing her only, you know your father. (dont misunderstand???)
when on a single day both pithru karyam and pooja there, first pithru karyam. may be seek their blessings first (they are GODS physically seen by you). in upanishads, there is a saying mathru devo bhava , pithru devo bhava.
even in monthly amavasya tharpanam, first tharpanam, then only other poojas.
But in all cases, Sandhya vandanam should be done first.

Srigurubhyo namaha,
Hi,
May be this information could be of some use, Shraddhams come form the word shraddha, So it will have no meaning if we just say shraddha without indicating anything. When you have pitr abbdhika Shraddha[ even amavasya, Tarpana days et al],
You are in a vow[ to your pitru] that day, so you need to complete the Shraddha first, because it's the instruction of bhagavaan[ smriti, shastras] to complete pitr vows first and then attend deva karyams, as devata are fulfilled one and pitr are not, so that's why even bramha Yajna is done after shraddha.
The logic behind here is you are directly descended from them, so if any Bhagavath vishaya etc, are done is because of this birth. So, you are worshipping paramatma [only] through them. Just like worshipping vishvaksena or Ganapathi[vighneshwara] before any puja/event.

In SriVaishnava Sampradayam on the Sradham day Perumal Thiru Aradhanam has to be done either by the Kartha or somebodyelse. Then Sradha rituals has to be started and performed. All the food items prepared have to be offered to Perumal first and the Prasadam has to be served to the Bhoktas.. This procedure is different for Smarrtha Brahmins.

Since you too have a leaf left for Mahavishnu with food, it is enough. If the srada is done with devotion, that is to get the blessings of your ancestor but through Lord Vishnu. Of the atma has reached his abode, you can the atma via the Lord. If on the other hand, the atma is in different Yoni - in different person's house as a child etc., still you can not reach that atma directly. That is why, the Srarda has significance for Lord Vishnu. The fear of GOD is unwanted. He neither punishes nor appreciate rather, your Karma is the one that decides. HE/SHE is pervasive and emanates as Love.
GOD never behaves like a human being. Ramayana, Mahabarada tells us that do punish the being depends on the Yoni in which it is born- as Rakshsha like Ravana, Kamsa, etc., Unfortunately we do rituals out of fear, rather it should be thanking our ancestors for the best they gave and not blame the for the worst we get through our Karma.
