Diseases caused by poorva janma karma - Part 1

Part 2 can be read here (on diabetes)
Part 3 can be read here (on rheumatism)
Part 4 can be read here (skin related diseases)
Part 5 can be read here (digestive system related)
Part 6 can be read here (head and face)
Part 7 can be read here (heart, kidney etc)

In the previous post we saw how Mrithyu reaches one by means of disease. Any disease does not spring up suddenly one day. The death – causing disease is ingrained at birth itself in the form of some weakness and vulnerability. When the respective planetary dasa or bhukthi runs, it triggers the blow-up of the disease.

Though the cause of a disease is traced to a deficiency or some such factor, the kind of suffering one experiences can not happen unless a related karmic reason is there as a causative. Ayurvedic system traces such causes for certain diseases so that in addition to medicine, the related propitiatory remedy can also be suggested to reduce the impact of the karmic cause. The book called 'Vaidhya Chinthamani" traces the acts in previous birth that follow one in the next birth and gets manifest as a disease. In other words, certain acts (karma) are identified as causatives of certain diseases. Such karmic diseases have to be treated with remedial measures in addition to medicine. The wisdom of Vaidhya Chinthamani is given below as a table.

I will write part 2 of this topic soon and post the link here. The basic texts for that part will be Prasna Marga by Neelakanta and Karma Vipaka by Veerasimhavaloka. There are Nadi texts which also reveal the Karma vipaka of diseases for the individuals.

Though all diseases are caused by some karma of purva janma, not all are specifically related to specific acts. Those that are specifically related to a past karma is given in the above article. Part 2 also will deal with such specific acts.

The rest are found out from individual horoscopes by analysing the 6th house, its Navamsa dispositor and the sign lord in Rasi of that dispositor, the 8th lord and the related planets to 6th and 8th houses. The diseases for which no known causes are seen can be known from Baadhaka lord and 5th lord and 5th house. A whole-some analysis must be done to know the planets that cause the disease and based on that the past karma is deduced. This varies from horoscope to horoscope. It is a tough task too and there is no way to know the authenticity of the derived conclusions. But the specific diseases listed out in the above article and that are to be written in part 2 are based on olden texts and developed by sages. Any reader of this article is advised to keep this in mind.

@ Jayaprakash Reddy
I have mentioned the names of texts above. Remedies must be decided on the basis of individual horoscopes. Karma vipaka remedies are given in the article.

@ Durai Raj

Please consult the same swamiji to know more. Usually any skin related disease of long standing and debilitating nature that makes the native to feel embarrassed, is related to some karma in matters of sex. It could be anything like, illegitimate sex, rape, sex with others while wife is alive, ignoring the wife, multiple partners, adultery and all the like. The only kind of sex that does not attract any karmic retribution is being to loyal to one's own wife. Based on the degree of the offense in every other kind of sex, the resultant karma will certainly have a disease related to the skin and some embarrassment on account of it. One Nadi text said that a man got leprosy due to ignoring his wife and desiring another woman. Another Nadi text said that a man (king's family) in a previous birth who had affairs with many woman had uncured itching problems in his next life. Generally the planets associated in these cases of skin related ailments are Mercury and Ketu. They must be propitiated. You said right ribs. Check the 3rd and 4th house, their lords, the signs Gemini and Cancer to arrive at the afflicting planets and remedies from them.

@ Indira Gajadjar.
Diabetes is a karmic disease. It is known as Prameha. One of the karmic causes is illicit and illegitimate sex in a previous birth. Other causes are stealing food, mis appropriation of agri produce of others etc. The logic is that if one makes an offence in the food to be taken by others, one's own food will not be absorbed by his body. Karma vipaka remedies are gifting water and food, gifting gold and cow. Chanting of Varuna mantra. Google search for Varuna mantra.

@ Bala subramanian.

Parkinson's disease is not found mentioned as such in texts. But the nature of that disease shows that it is very much a karmic disease. Since brain and nervous system are affected in the disease, the related karma vipaka could be that of having caused immense damage or suffering to brain related faculties of others. You can derive any number of such offences starting from poisoning to deliberately hampering the chances of others in achieving the fruits of the efforts of brain (thought, deed and action). The planets involved are Sun (brain / head) and Mercury (nervous system). Others must be deduced from the horoscope. Do remedies for them.

For hyper tension, the karma vipaka texts speak about Raktha pittham or blood related pitta. usually the karmic cause is unscientific preparation of medicines or careless treatment of people with diseases (in previous birth). Propitiation of mars is one remedy.

This thread is in General discussion: Should it be?

What is not caused by poorva janma karma?

From TamilBrahmins search:

GOD has nothing to do with punishing the person and his/her team, indulging in something among themselves. BUT, the repercussions of their act as a reaction would for sure surface some day or other, in some way or the other, for which they would be responsible on their own.

Sangomji Wrote:

Again, you seem to have a fixation that Karma is something like crime & punishment. IMHO, this is farthest from the Truth. Even the Bhagavadgeetha refers only to "phala" of Karma (mā phaleṣu kadācana). Now suppose someone throws a stone on to a mango tree (with the hope of a ripe mango falling down, of course). A mango, or some mango leaves or even some dry twigs, or nothing may fall to the ground, but the one sure "phala" of this Karma is normally that the stone has to fall down to earth. We today know that this is due to earth's gravity, etc., and so we will not call for some God who is catching that stone and throwing it back at the thrower.

It is very similar with any Karma. Taking the JD example which you cite, I believe that the liking for JD will survive even after your physical body perishes and in the next birth come latent and expand to its full bloom if circumstances are convenient for that. In fact the next birth will be such as to guide you through whatever the "phalas" of the previous Karmas we are slated to experience.

I hope you are now clear that there is neither any charge-sheet, nor any punishments but it is more like a system of self-assessment, self-guidance and, of course, self-experience of the results also. As you sow, so you reap. There is a Malayalam saying which means 'if you sowthe pumpkin seeds, you won't get to harvest the winter-melons'.

Kabir das says:
Dukh Mein Simran Sab Kare, Sukh Mein Kare Na Koye
Jo Sukh Mein Simran Kare, Tau Dukh Kahe Ko Hoye

दुख मȂसुमिरन सब करे, सुख मेकरेन कोय ।
जो सुख मेसुमिरन करे, दुख कहेको होय ॥

[In anguish everyone prays to Him, in joy does none
To One who prays in happiness, how sorrow can come]

If one thinks they get away from the results of their Karma, they are deluding themselves.

Karma is the memory of our souls, which means it’s often long-standing, even stemming from prior lives. Indeed, the course of our current life is mostly predetermined by earlier lifetimes: what we didn’t finish then we come back to finish now.

What we didn’t “make right” in our last life will persistently present itself in this one, like an uninvited guest who won’t leave. Unpleasant situations are the consequence of lingering karma, which can always be reversed and resolved. Acknowledge these five properties of past-life karma that still affect you, in order to erase the energy carried over from former lifetimes.

Without even knowing it, you may be experiencing karma that originated several lifetimes ago.

1. Karma has no expiration date.
Karma is the luggage your soul carries on its trip from life-to-life. Unfortunately, unlike luggage at the airport, this particular baggage never gets lost, which means you’re stuck with it until you open it up and sort through its ancient contents. Without even knowing it, you may be experiencing karma that originated several lifetimes ago. But when you do dig through your karmic suitcase, then finally, you can confront your outstanding karma and lighten your energetic load.

2. No person in your life — from your mother to your spouse to your mailman — is a coincidence.
Everyone is placed into your life strategically for a reason. While you have the free will to walk away from or remain with a certain person, karma overpowers free will.

This means that the course of karmic relationships will play out as planned despite your best efforts. Acknowledge the role of each person in your life: Why are they there? What have they come to teach you and vice versa? What is the karma you’re meant to experience with this person? The sooner you acknowledge the truth of the karma you share with someone (whether it’s good or bad), the sooner you can settle it.

3. What you have done, you become.
Thanks to the media, we often think of karma as “what goes around comes around.” But the reality of karma is more expansive than just being “punished” for our bad deeds — there exists positive karma, just as much as negative karma. If you stole, others will steal from you in following lives. If you nourished, you will be nourished. Your actions throughout your various lifetimes become the circumstances of your being.

4. Roles often reverse.
One of the most fascinating facts about karma is that it often causes us to reincarnate in a reversed manner. This means that your parent may have actually been your child in a former life. Then, before reincarnating in this lifetime, the souls agreed the take on the opposite act. Souls switch genders, too. Positions shift throughout lifetimes based on karmic need; whatever dynamic is needed to repair or heal karma will be manifested through changing roles in our cycle of lives on earth. The people you know now may have had a very different impact on your previous lives!

5. Karma repeats to produce new results.
There’s a greater reason that karma repeats itself, and it’s not to cause you pain; it’s to teach you to take different actions for different results. If you’re attracting the same type of partners into your life over and over again, it’s time to stop and inspect your choices: Why do similar people keep coming in? What should you be doing differently?

If you think doing Shanti or paying someone to pray for you or rearrange the planets in the sky will change this universal principle you are deluding yourself.
You have to bear the consequences of your action.

It might give you some mental satisfaction to do meditation or some charity.
See a good medical doctor, have good nutrition, do some excercise and bear the fruits of your action with dignity.

hi

i have a book called MEDICAL ASTROLOGY....it is based on astrology....the details medical problems

about individual karma phala...

To ascribe a direct punishment for a Karma is totally wrong.
Yes you have to have the results of your karma and that can not be mitigated.
But there is no scientific correlation between disease in this life with poorva janma Karma.
Assigning guilt to the suffering does no good and it is cruel.
We Hindus abandoned our own family (for instance Leprosy), and a Christian Lady had to come to open our eyes.
That is a collective failure on us, to believe such ignorant Hogwash and superstition.

These are known cause and effects.
If a person starts heavy drinking in this life, they will have liver damage.
If a person smokes cigarettes in this life they will have lung disease.
People exposed to Mica dust or asbestos will have a serious health condition.
If you come in contact with HIV positive blood you will develop HIV.

Illness enters the body through the agency of our karma. Our karma creates weaknesses in the aura, and through those weaknesses, illness can enter. There isn’t anything we can do about the existence of that karma. We can’t banish it. But we can we can offset karmic law by spiritual means.

You will not be anything but hopelessly diseased until you realize the truth of your own nature, the reality of your oneness with God. Ignorance of your oneness with God is the supreme disease of which all others are merely outward and limited manifestations. Banish that ignorance and know who and what you really are.

Karma Cubed – Three Views of Karma
Posted on November 18, 2013 by Sitara
Quoting from S.N. Sastri’s Terms and Concepts in Vedanta:
“The word ‘karma’ is used in two different senses in vedAnta:
(1) the results of actions performed, in the form of merit and demerit (puNya and pApa), which produce their effects later on, usually in another birth, and
(2) the action itself, whether secular or religious.”
After reading Swami Narayana Muni Prasad’s superb booklet “Karma and Reincarnation” I would like to point to a third sense in which the word karma can and needs to be understood, especially for advanced students of Advaita.
karmaKarma as puNya and pApa
At some point every seeker comes across the concept of karma in this sense. If he follows Western Advaita he may dismiss the concept as something altogether irrelevant or, if he is not yet an advaitin, he may subscribe to the Western version of karma as an assignment for this lifetime ( which, if successfully absolved, will produce the kind of life that everyone is wishing for: safe, pleasant and ethical.

Followers of traditional Advaita Vedanta will learn what S.N. Sastriji describes like this:

“Karma, in the sense of results of actions performed, is divided into three categories:

(1) saMchita karma—the accumulated results of actions performed in past births,

(2) prArabdha karma– those results of past actions which have given rise to the present body and

(3) AgAmi karma—the results of actions performed in the present birth.

On the dawn of Self-knowledge the first category is completely destroyed along with the third category acquired up to the time of attainment of knowledge. After the dawn of Self-knowledge any action performed does not produce any result in the form of merit or demerit. The second category is not destroyed on the attainment of Self-knowledge, but has to be exhausted only by being actually experienced. On the exhaustion of this category of karma the body of the enlightened person falls and the jIvanmukta becomes a videhamukta.”

This concept of karma can help a person to mature and eventually become a karma yogi. How? In the beginning of the spiritual search we cannot even assume an attitude of karma yoga (see below). Instead the religious person is mostly occupied with finding practical solutions for his life – not anymore on his own accord but now with the help of supernatural powers. His main questions revolve around “how to …?” Even though he may talk of heaven, calling it moksha, he does not have a Vedantic concept of moksha yet. The beginner basically seeks to fulfil the first three puruShArtha-s, artha, kAma and dharma, i.e. he would like to feel safe and happy in this world and go through his life with a clear conscience. Religion is his means to fulfil these needs.

From the standpoint of Vedanta this attitude is childish. The person is the helpless victim of his own whims and foibles and keeps turning to the gods to get him out of the mess he finds himself in. The above concept of karma helps him to take responsibility for what he does and for what befalls him. Thus it lifts him out of dependency on the gods to the understanding that it is up to himself to improve his life. Gaining an understanding of the law of karma he will automatically mature. He will get a broader understanding of his own life in a broader context.

In this way he becomes ready for karma yoga.

Diseases like polio have been eradicated because of research and dedication of people who were not enamoured by superstitions.
Does it mean that karmas associated. With polio was wiped out?
NO, that can not be true as it is against karma theory.

What is Superstition? It is a term signifying derogation that is used by the religious and non-religious alike, superstition is the deprecated belief in supernatural causation.Faith is belief in revealed truth. Superstition is, therefore, the absolutely opposite of true faith. Curiously enough, some people manage to believe in the teachings of religion and to be superstitious at the same time. They are either not aware of the striking contradiction of faith and superstition, or they do not understand what superstition really is.

It is human nature to fall prey to superstitions, says a psychiatrist. "There are many factors that are responsible - cultural and family learning, anxiety related to the important things of life, fear about the untoward, and basically the fact that everything in life is not in our control."
Beliefs and superstitions are passed down from generation to generation particularly by people belonging to Hindu community. These faiths have sprung with an objective to protect from evil spirits, but some were based on scientific reasoning. Astrology is an integral part of Indian culture. Even today many people prefer to do good things such as entering a newly made home (Gruhapravesha) , fixing a marriage proposal, fixing a marriage date, entry of a bride to her new home, starting a new business etc, according to their astrological belief. But are these not the causes of the degradation of the majority of Hindus and have lead to softening of the brain?: In the words of Swami Vivekananda" Brain which cannot think high and noble thoughts, which has lost all power of originality, which has lost all vigour, that brain which is always poisoning itself with all sorts of little superstitions passing under the name of religion, we must beware of them.

India can be free from superstitions only when the masses are educated and beliefs are systematically weeded out by spiritual gurus. The best way of combating superstition is education. A radical change should be brought about in the minds of the people to curtail blind beliefs."

Few points -

  1. Karma theory is focussed on actions and its positive and negative consequences
  2. Karmic actions have to be fulfilled in this lifetime and the next as required or until soul reaches liberation or moksha.
  3. Human Suffering and or prayschittams is the way to resolve these past negative karmas.
  4. Let's say, If people overcome TB, then they will end up suffering something else in life due to the unresolved karmas

In brief, as long as we have bad karmas from the past, we will continue to suffer one way or other. More human advances happen, more terrible diseases spring like HIV, cancer. Etc..

I think that the whole concept of poorva jamna karma is misleading and the concept of pariharam is not there in vedic texts. All of us are like play dolls in the hands of supreme.

Not at all. Karma theory is solid and has stood the test of time, over generations and generations.

If you analyse the vagaries of life, in ones own life and the others, you will see the constant impact of our karmas.

If I have done a lot of good in my younger days, I can see many good things happening now, and vice versa based on bad actions.

hi

even in science proved karma theory....NEWTON'S THIRD LAW....EACH AND EVERY ACTION HAS

EQUAL AND OPPOSITION REACTION WILL BE THERE... so no doubt about KARMA THEORY..

I do not think any Hindu is opposed to karma theory period end.
But to ascribe a specific illness to poorva Janma Karma is illogical.
No one I say no one can come up with a list of punishment for a particular Karma as per Shankara or Vedas. Please do not bring Itihasas, myths, and falsehood.

Disease come and they sometimes get cured. Science finds the cure. Only people who believe that a cure is possible will invest time and money into it.

If you believe the disease is god given or Karma given one would not try to find a cure. Is that the reason we Hindus never have found a cure for any disease? I would hate to admit that.
But these kinds of fatalistic thinking is what keeps us from progressing.

the concept of pariharam is not there in vedic texts. All of us are like play dolls in the hands of supreme.
.

Incorrect and one just has to have a rudimentary knowledge of the meaning of the mantra one recites/chants while doing daily sandhyavandanam, especially the mantra beginning with . "sUryascha, mA manyuscha, manyu pathayascha, manyu kretEbhyAH"

The paraphrased meaning is "let me be absolved of the sins committed (in the night) by my mind, my speech, my hands, my legs, my stomach and my reproductive organ" etc. The theory of karma is based on the accumulation of pApams (sins) and puNyams (benedictions?) and seeking relief from the effects of pApam is nothing but seeking relief from karma theory.

SandhyAvandanam is nothing but parihAram of sins committed and accrued knowingly or unknowingly and gAyatri japam is the catalyst.

Good observation. There are different schools of thought For eg. In a commentary to Brahma Sutras (III, 2, 38, and 41), a Vedantic text, Adi Sankara, who consolidated the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta, a sub-school of Vedanta, argues that the original karmic actions themselves cannot bring about the proper results at some future time; neither can super sensuous, non-intelligent qualities like adrsta—an unseen force being the metaphysical link between work and its result—by themselves mediate the appropriate, justly deserved pleasure and pain. The fruits, according to him, then, must be administered through the action of a conscious agent, namely, a supreme being.

Or in other words when Karma itself originates from a supreme being, there is no question of pariharam by man itself.
The other way of propiation as in Sandyavandanam or tharpanam can be looked as a way of reminding us in right path and removing the layers of ego's over us so as to realize Brahman.
