Delhi considers shutting schools as toxic smog continues

Many schools have already restricted outdoors activities as record levels of air pollution in the Indian capital are expected to last for months to come
Authorities in Delhi are considering shutting schools in the sprawling Indian capital as a bout of toxic smog stretches into a second month.

The megacity, already the world’s most polluted by some measures, has been suffering record levels of pollution which exceed recommended WHO guidelines by between 15 and 30 times.

The smog, a combination of exhaust from cars and lorries, dust, smoke from fires and industrial output which is intensified by cold temperatures, is predicted to last for months to come.

Pollution & Corruption should be treated with the same vengeance and acted upon...Let us look at Tokyo which is the most populated at 38 million against Delhi's 25 million..The air pollution Index in Tokyo is 139 now while it is 431 in Delhi at Anand Vihar which is more than 3 times..Let us learn from Japan and use technology to reduce pollution!

Chennai rains was not sulphur/ brimstone rain but yet devasting But in Delhi I am sure Lord will rain with brimstone with so much smog mainly oxides of S and N ! Delhi has to correct itself to avoid this tragedy due to acid rains!

Delhi schools have always been opening late first week in delhi in winter around 5or 6th jan. Taking it to 15th jan does not make an earthly difference.

Only office goers would be wondering what to do with their kids home. during this period.

normally those with working mothers are dumped in creche after school.

Now creche will get over burdened to conduct pollution control experiments

Delhites do not take pollution seriosly .

They will try to circumvent it by all means at their disposal.

If it still persists they will get rid of the local govt which is creating nuisance without realising the hardships people are likely to face.

I think well meaning unrealistic ways of limiting pollution will be a big failure like the swacha bharat .

These things are only tokenism not to be taken seriously

Delhi people probably would have been outraged by this idea initially, irrespective of its feasibility in the long run.

While study reports confirm that Delhi is the most polluted city with more toxic blend, it is implied that Delhi citizen are literally breathing poison which is something very serious and cannot be compromised.

In fact Delhi High Court was very serious on this issue and hence passed scathing comment that Deli Citizen are literally live in a gas chamber.

It is the duty of responsible citizen to co-operate, support the initiatives of the Government to curb pollution level.

It is high time and Delhi citizen and to make changes in their life style and attitude in the interest of their own city and their own health.

If they don’t change, it will be too late.

Will they change????

Now it is the cold wave and mercury plummeting to 6 degrees celsius.

One slum in shakur basti destroyd by railways whose poor occupants have been left literally in the cold to suffer.

A big row between delhi govt and railways on this.

A small child died also there .

It is this callousness of the central govt which drives all up the wall.

Do you know more money is lost by people in delhi in thefts than the yearly budget of delhi govt.

Even my neighbour in the back street { we share a common wall} had his flat burgled.

During my trip outside delhi in winter couple of seasons back my flat got the same treatment.

Now I feel safe as It is highly unlikely that the same flat will be burgled twice.

Delhi is an interesting place.

There is excitement about something or the other holding ones attention.

One has to be a local to appreciate delhi with all its issues.

During my trip outside delhi in winter couple of seasons back my flat got the same treatment.

Almost all independent houses in Chennai and other parts of TN are also target of robbery in case the occupants leave the house locked and go on a holiday for 1-2 weeks . In Apartments it is usually the ground floor that gets robbed more . I find apartments relatively safer in Chennai compared to Independent houses . Even during this flood Crisis in Chennai many independent houses were the target of thieves after the occupants left to other places for safety and many house owners took turns to montior their streets at Night inspite of the water to prevent thieves from breaking into their houses and looting .

And while a member sitting at Delhi can comment on Chennai and its recent devastation, rescue, relief, etc without absolutely no idea of ground reality, why not a Chennaiite comment on Delhi which has the highest crime reported against women and which suffers with highest level of pollution.

I have my reservation about mention of corruption as we have to wait and see how this Government perform during its tenure.

It is too much attachment to material things which make people over protective of their possessions.

To become paranoid about this and losing sleep besides having multiple levels of security to safeguard against intruders can cause damage to people.

Best is to take it in stride and move on.

These kind of things happen perhaps once or twice in a lifetime.

I would not like to lose faith in basic goodness of human beings due to a stray incident.

Here is a typical declaration of grief-stricken Delhi-ites which are highly pathetic.

If one knew such pollution already exist, why the responsible are all sleeping over it and allowing other Delhi-ites to die slowly?

It is implied that such irresponsible inaction just convey to the outside world Delhi's incompetence and inefficiency to deal with and get over such crisis.

A Delhi-ite may not be more happy to live at Delhi , becos most of his precious time is spent on worrying about the water scarcity, water pollution, air pollution or other umpteen number social economic problems faced in his day-today life. And for a few, their favourite entertainment is eve-teasing women more especially after dark and involve in all sorts of offences and land in 'Tihar' ultimately.

And it is reported that Tamil Nadu Police manages the security of Tihar.

And for one member, it is better to think from the top of his head before clicking the SAVE button in every POST.

A family living in the middle of an eight-lane motorway, an autorickshaw driver struggling to breathe, a young woman who can’t wait to leave ... the foul air of India’s capital affects all sections of society.

For three years Mohammad Yunus, his wife Babli, five children and a handful of relatives have made their home on a patch of concrete in the middle of an eight-lane motorway, near a stretch of road named after Mahatma Gandhi. As lorries, buses and motorcycles roar past on either side of the family’s cramped bit of south Delhi pavement, and a modern, concrete flyover carries several more lanes of traffic overhead, their evening routine unfolds.

A young woman in a pink dress squats to kindle a fire from wooden sticks and plastic bottles, then breaks a lump of dough into pieces to bake into chapatti bread. A three-month-old baby and a toddler sleep on a dirty mat just a few feet from the curb. The incessant blaring of horns makes conversation difficult, but does not rouse the children.

Delhi’s horrendous air pollution – the worst in the world, according to the World Health Organisation – is far from the only worry facing the Yunus family. But the poisonous fumes are doing them serious harm, and the children are particularly vulnerable to its health-wrecking effects.

But the city’sdestitute – poorly nourished, often suffering from chronic illnesses, andunable to afford medical care – are the most severely affected. “These peopledon’t get any respite from the pollution, even at night, so yes I think it does[cause more death and illness among the poor]”, says Dr Neeraj Jain, arespiratory consultant at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. “It’s just their economicstatus that makes them more vulnerable.”

For how long? It is not at all a solution to the pollution control in Delhi. Delhi's air is basically dependant on atmosphere of neighbouring states. So along with measures whatever is being taken by Govt of Delhi, Delhi's neighbours also should behave responsibly. More than motor vehicles, industries emissions from neighbouring Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Kundly industrial areas contribute a large amount pollutants in Delhi's air. Joint effort of all the neighbouring states alongwith Delhi could only bring some respite to the Delhi"s condition, Again deisel and all other types of vehicles are allowed to run in these cities. They also needs to be checked. Closure of two power plants in Delhi may help in reduction in emission from Delhi but unless and until these neighbouring cities also contribute their part.

It is a matter of a few weeks of winter when it is extreme in every thing.

Some winter rains with dust settling down and a cold wave can shift focus away from pollution.

It is the usual night shelters for the homeless.

Sky rocketing prices and shortage of something or other mostly artificially created.

All these are yearly features.

Most accept these and move on with life.

For tomorrow is another day to be lived in full.With the cup of something warm and special overflowing , with lilting music and thinking of omar khayyam is a way out.

Unlike few who have a tendency to comfortably sleep over burning issues and simply pass the buck on other agencies at crucial hour, Kejriwal’s AAP Government has seriously took some initiative like ‘Odd-even scheme’ and a ban on diesel vehicles, besides other measures,


There are Governments which keeping doing nothing on burning issues and will take a stand of ‘let us cross the bridge when it comes’.

Now let us wait and see how such measures of AAP Government works out practically and how far Delhi-ites co-operate in impementation of such schemes to combat air pollution in the interest of their own and State in general.

One more option is that Delhi employers can try ‘work from home model’

An obliging colleague would punch the attendance card for you .Most lower level staff follow this rule.

Higher level officers go away on tour to enjoy five star lives in other metros

More than half of MCD workers are ghost employees drawing salaries.

If all turn up for work, The govt would not be able to take it.

Their contribution will bring down the govt.

At about 30% efficiency with laid back life govt works best

Like 'Odd-Even- Scheme, thee will be more schemes, more legislation and activities will be initiated by Government or by the NGOs or even by the public themselves or by Courts.

It is high time, Delhi-its need to change, instead of taking a rigid stand.

Recent dropping of temperature changed delhi air.A big drop in particulate matter reported.

If it rains[normal winter rain}, it will drop further as the dust will settle

Nature itself has a good correcting mechanism.

Of course AAP can take credit for reduced pollution.lol
