Sandhi(सन्धि): Sandhi means the sound chages in combination of two letters coming in immediate contact with each other.
As for example- पौ+अकः=पावकः, शिव+छाया=शिच्छाया etc.

There are three types of Sandhi:

1. अच् सन्धि or स्वरसन्धि (The combination of final and initial vowels)
2. हल् सन्धि or व्यंजन सन्धि (The combination of final consonants with vowels and consonants)
3. विसर्ग सन्धि (Visargasandhi) -

स्वरसन्धि(Vowel Joining): Vowel sandhi means the changes occur in a word because of the combination of final and initial vowels.

It is of various types. Such as :

1. यण् सन्धि
2. अयादि सन्धि
3. गुण सन्धि
4. वृद्धि सन्धि
5. सवर्णदीर्घ सन्धि
6. पूर्वरूप सन्धि
7. पररूप सन्धि
8. प्रकृति भाव

सवर्णदीर्घ सन्धि : If a simple vowel, short or long, be followed by a similar vowel, short and long, the substitute for them both is the similar long vowel, is known as दीर्घ सन्धि, ( अकः सवर्णे दीर्घः ६/१/१०१)

गुण सन्धि : When अ or आ is followed by इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ॠ and ऌ, the गुण letter corresponding to the letter takes the place of both अ and आ (as: ए=अ+इ, ओ=अ+उ, अर्=अ+ऋ and अल्=अ+ऌ) is known as गुण सन्धि, (आद्गुणः ६/१/८७)

वृद्धि सन्धि : When अ or आ is followed by ए or ऐ, ओ or औ and ऋ or लृ are respectively substituted for both अ and आ (as: ऐ=अ+ए or अ+ऐ, औ=अ+ओ or अ+ओ, आर्=अ+ऋ and आल्=अ+ऌ ) is known as वृद्धि सन्धि, (वृद्धिरेचि ६/१/८८ )

यण् सन्धि : When इ, ई, उ, ऊ, ऋ, ॠ or ऌ, at the end of a word followed by a dissimilar vowel, य् व्, र्, and ल् are respectively substituted for them,then it is यण् सन्धि, (इको यणचि ६/१/७७)

अयादि सन्धि : When ए, ऐ, ओ, and औ followed by a vowel, they are changed into अय्, आय्, अव्, आव् respectively, then it is known as अयादि सन्धि, (एचोऽयवायावः ६/१/७८)

पूर्वरुप सन्धि : When ए or ओ at the end of a word is followed by अ, the latter merges into the former and the sign ’ऽ’ is written in its place, then it is known as पूर्वरुप सन्धि,(एङः पदान्तादति ६/५/१०७)

परसवर्ण सन्धि (अनुस्वारस्य ययि परसवर्णः ८/४/५८) : An Anuswara, followed by any consonant except श्, ष्, स् and ह् is changed to the nasal of the class to which the following letter belongs, necessarily when in the middle and optionally when at the end of a word.

1. (क) An Anuswara, followed by the any letter of ’कवर्ग’ is changed into ’ङ्’.

v.जश्त्व सन्धि : When the last letter of a word is the first, second, third and fourth one, then it changed into the third letter of the same class. For example - क् becomes ग्, च् becomes ज्, ट् is ड्, त् is द् and प् becomes ब्.

Very helpful and useful Sandhi rules - all explained in one place (with examples too!). Sometime the separation is not unique (where to split the Sandhi is the tricky thing). So many Sanskrit poets/ have utilized this to their advantages!

Here is an example where the same two liner becomes the question as well as the answer (depending up on where you break the Sandhi)

Here are the Questions

कं संजघान कृष्णः ? का शीतलवाहिनी गङ्गा ?
के दारपोषणरताः ? कं बलवन्तं न बाधते शीतम् ?


Here are the answers

कंसं जघान कृष्णः । काशी तलवाहिनी गङ्गा ।

Thanks for ur inputs Renuka .I have to get back to my Sanskrit learning that I stopped after completing my First Level in Samskrit Bharati in Chennai few years back . This forum has rekindled my interest in Sanskrit again .

I just realized that that line I wrote has a grammatical error.

It should read as "Ekam Sat Vayam Bahuda Vadaamah"

meaning that Truth is One We call it many.

As far as I remember it is from one of the Strictly For Brahmins Forums.
I have a Brahmin friend who is in that Forum who sends me all important material from that website (since I am not a Brahmin by birth I am not allowed into that Forum)

Thanks for ur inputs .I will contact u via pm once I get the permission through the forum . No hurry .My basic interest in learning Sanskrit is not just for some aesthetic or literary purpose but for me to read and chant and understand our Stotras , Scriptures properly . I am adopting a Phonetic based approach to learning Sanskrit i.e learning to pronounce the words properly while learning and collecting all possible Sahasranamas of various deities to help me in this process .
I will keep sharing my inputs when ever I find some interesting thing to be shared .
