Can Birds Predict Your Future? By London Swaminathan

Kili Jothitam (Parrot Astrology)

South Indians, particularly Tamils, have some strange beliefs. It is ironic that they believe in nuclear physics and astrophysics and at the same time believe in the following four as well:

Birds can predict your future
Lizards can predict your future
Eyes can predict your future
Sneeze can predict your future

Is there any science behind it? Well, as far as I know, birds and animals can predict earth quakes and weather. Lot of scientific proof is available for both weather and EQ. Just before the onset of South West Monsoon certain kind of birds are seen in Kerala. All the Indian news papers report it every year and the rains also start in the next few days. If animals behave strangely, then some natural catastrophe like earth quakes will happen. This is also documented by the scientists.

People in the western countries have some beliefs about at least 15 types of birds. In Tamil also we have lots of proverbs on birds and animals. Crow is praised and insulted in Tamil proverbs. I have posted 200+ Proverbs on elephants from among the 20,000 Tamil Proverbs.

Tamil Panchang (traditional calendars with Hindu festival days etc.) has got two pages devoted to Pancha Pakshi Shastra (Prediction by Five Birds) and Lizard Predictions. Nobody has done any scientific research into it to prove it or disprove it. The Bird astrology divides the day into five parts allocating one each to vulture, owl, crow, cock and peacock. Actually there is more to it. They tell you what would happen depending upon the nature of flights of birds. It is an interesting area for research students.

If we go to the Lizard astrology page, the Panchang divides it into two parts. It tells you what would happen if a lizard falls on you and if the lizard calls (makes sound). It tells you something good or bad would happen depending upon the part of the body it touches or the direction of the sound. Big tabular columns are in the Panchang for birds and lizards predictions.

Fluttering Eyes
Flutter of eyes also is taken into account to find what is going to happen next. This is supported in Sanskrit literature as well. Tamils are not alone in it. One thing is common in all these strange predictions. Left is good for women and right is good for men. Probably the logic for this is Ardhanari principle of Lord Shiva, i.e. Shiva’s left side is shared by Parvathy. Bible also supports it by saying the woman is made from the left rib of man (For more, please read my Sanskrit in Bible posts).

Sneeze

If a person sneezes they say “Bless you” in western countries. Actually it started in India. We have enough proof for this in Tamil and Sanskrit literature.
Tirukkural, the most famous book of the Tamils, says in Chapter FEIGNED:

When I continue to be receding, he sneezed and thought I would then wish him long life (Kural 1312)
I sneezed; “Live long”, she blessed. Then suddenly she wept saying, “You sneezed thinking of some other lady” (Kural 1317)

I stifled my sneeze. She wept saying, “Is it to hide from me the thought of thee in the mind of thy beloved” (Kural 1318)

(Ladies! Beware of your husband’s sneezes! Watch him and count the number of sneezes!!)

Parrot Astrology

Let me finish with Parrot Astrology. In nook and corner of Tamil Nadu you can see Parrot Astrologers sitting under a banyan tree or by the side of the temple wall. No foreigner misses a photo with them. Parrot astrologers carry a cage with three parrots. If you are ready to spare a few Paise (olden days) or rupees (modern days), he will predict you whether you would pass in the exams, get a promotion, succeed in the job interview, cure your cancer or get your heart throb!!
He simply calls the parrot to pick a card from the deck of cards he keeps ready. Say for example, if I go to him, he will ask my name first and tell the parrot, get good a card for Mr Swaminathan. The parrot walks majestically and picks a card, gives it faithfully to the astrologer, gets a bribe of one or two nuts or grains and walks back into its cage (slavery again for a faithful service!). He reads the card and Voila, You know your future!

Singapore Pyschic Bird Predicts Netherlands to win World Cup 2010! – FAIL

Yes, Prasad. It is interesting. After the Octopus predicting the Word Cup results, here in London, we hear such animal psychics. But this is the first time I hear about Singapore parrot.

The Daily mail of London has published an interesting story yesterday about a racing pigeon that flew to Bahamas--instead of Leeds in the UK. it is 4500 miles away from its target. Because racing pigeons carry a ring with the ownes's address they informed the owner in the city of Leeds that it was safe in Bahamas. But pigeon specialists bellieve it went on a cruise ship instead of flying across the vast sea.It is possible.

When I worked for the BBC Tamil service I did a programme on London pigeons. They are clever. They use the underground trains to go from one station to another station to get food! Men are making the animals lazy with their modern vehicles. I read another news item of birds taking boats instead of flying aross sea. Probably they also want some fun like human beings.

If some one wants to start from house and some one else sneezes(thummal) then he should not start from house. He should drink water and after rest for some time then only he is allowed to leave the house. If it is two thummal then it is ok.

If cat crosses road from left to right then it is not a good oman but if it crosses our way from right to left it is a good oman. If a snake crosses our way it is a good oman.

If we see two snakes dancing together it is auspicious to watch and if some body dare to put a handkerchief on them and retrieve later and keep it in a pooja room he can get wealth.

If crow (karayardhu) shouts sitting in East of our house it is a good oman and bring fortune to our house and it is in reverse if the same is done sitting in north. Seeing One crow(Andangkakkai) bring sorrow, two for joy, three for letter and four for friend.

If a dog shouts(Oolalyiduvadhu)at night is not a good oman.

Around my house near an ashram , surrounded by bushes, there are many snakes
of different kinds. I have seen them locked together and standing upto five or
six feet and hissing. I watch them from the first floor, but even if one of them
see you, that is it.

But the main question here is - do they know what is to come and make
gestures or sounds to alert us ? The answer is - yes. Dogs cry aloud when
something bad is to follow. Birds fly when before earth tremors. You can see
flies before it rains.

Here we have a better predictions, called meteorologist. They are more consistant.
If you beat a dog, it will cry, but its timing is off. Birds fly in the evening and morning, it is called roosting, or migration.

Believe it or not. If my second son sneezes one time, It is a definite NO. Immediately my wife will abandon that proposal. This thummal (sneeze) belief was with my mum as well.

The second thing I wanted to say is about a proverb on ants: Erumbu muttai kondu thittai erinaal mazai varum (If ants in a row carry eggs to higher ground, it is going to pour down soon. Probably they have inbuilt barometers!!!

Indian Myth About Sneezing

In India, it is generally believed that if someone sneezes before going somewhere or doing some work, there will be some obstacle in the way. It is usually advised to stop for five minutes after sneezing; after the waiting period, the individual believes it's okay to resume the work.

Fact: A sneeze is the result of a reflex; it's an action that's automatic and beyond an individual's control. Normally, people sneeze when an irritant enters the nasal cavity; sneezing can also result from congestion. Through sneezing, the body rids the respiratory system of harmful germs, irritants and congestion.
In Roman times people believed that a sneeze could release your soul to the world. To bless your sneeze was to offer a blessing to your soul to release your soul instead of holding it in in some sort of internal struggle. In another story, sneezing was used to bless the sneezer during the time of the Black Death Plague in 1348 AD. Sneezing during this time became a sign of the sick and infected and saying “God Bless You” became customary law to all. Blessing the sneeze would also be an attempt to stop the spread of the plague.

Ignorance is the cause of Superstitions.

If you believe that, these poor ants did not get the memo. Please send an urgent e-mail to them.

Dogs cry aloud when
something bad is to follow.

Dogs cry aloud when they want to convey some message to a fellow canine.
If you listen carefully..you will hear the feedback from other canines after the initial cry.

It is their mode of communication.
I have lived before in an area just next to a jungle and I have seen my dog communicate even with monkeys.

So I do not think that when dogs cry..its a bad omen.

For all you know they are telling each other:

I love you
I miss you
My master has gone out..wanna come over tonight?
Guess what dog..they are even discussing about us in forum!!LOL

Dear Renuka

It is not they are just communicating. There is more to it. Biologists say that the dogs' smelling power is 3000 times more than human beings. That is why they are used by the police and the army. They can "smell" lot of other things as well, like earth tremors which humans cant hear. That is how animals and birds find what humans fail to find ( I mean earth quakes, Tsunamis etc). Elephants communicate with a different wave length of sound inaudible to human beings. Snakes use infrared rays to "smell" food. That is why Tamils call it Kat Sevi (Eye Ear). It has a special organ in the eye. I have written about it in the Nagaratnam (Cobra Jewel) article. So don't treat animal sounds as what we believe it is. An interesting debate is going on in western science journals whether Dolphins have "language". Reading such articles, I believe they don't just communicate to expresslove and pain.

My mum used to say dogs can see Yama ( God of Death). If it howls for days, a death is certain in that area she and others believed. They can smell adrenaline rush more than any other creature in the world.

By the way, Tamils installed a Nadu Kal (hero stone) for a dog 1500 years ago. Japanese installed a dog statue in front of Tokyo railway station for a faithful dog who waited and received its master everyday from that station. Why did we do it. They are special creatures.

True Shri N. R. Ranaganathan, When you see lots of Thumbi (flies with a long tail) flies here and there, it is sure there will be rain with in an hour or two.

If you are lucky enough to see white owl you will get wealth (In bengal white owl is the vahan of Lakshmi). Other way round If the owl (other than white) comes to your place you can expect some bad things will happen. In the year 2002 we saw an owl outside our office and it moved and stood at the window of the 4th floor. (our office is in the 5th floor) and New India is in the 4th floor. Withi in a week, the office in the 4 the floor was gutted by fire during office hours and we faced difficulty in vacating our office since entire building was covered by thick smoke. (May be kaakai utkara panam pazham vizndha kadhai).

Dogs can see Ghost for sure cos once my younger brother heard dogs howling outside the house and he looked out the window and saw a ghost flying about and the dogs were chasing it!!

My brother was so scared that he just stood there without saying a word.
Only the next few minutes he told us what he saw.

Mr. London,
You have been in western world. There are thousands of dogs, and dog lovers, but no stray dogs here. Dogs are trained pets and people are responsible owners of dogs. How many times have you heard dogs howling in USA.

You are mixing science with superstitions. Chairman Mao famously said "you mix some lies with truth and keep repeating it, then people will accept your lies".

Just for a moment think logically, even if it is difficult for you.

Dear Prasad

The very word Shakunam (good or bad omens) came from the word for bird Shakuni.
No smoke without fire. Unless our forefathers noticed something significant for generations, they wouldn't write about birds or lizards in book formats. But I agree with Shri Brahmanyan, that we should NOT fear for every thing and attribute anything to Maya, Mantra, Pilli Sunyam, ghosts etc.. Only great people like Shankaracharyas have authority to say Yes or No in these matters. But no one is compelled to believe in it. Lot of people know that No 666 and No 13, particularly on Friday is hated by westerners. An Irish lady who works with me is scared about Friday 13th. Even the Vedic scriptures and Mayas are against No 13. I have already written about it. 13th month is called Mala matham and all good things are avoided. Some of these beliefs remind you certain bad anecdotes. Some of them really cause havoc.

Strange it may look, Today's London Metro Newspaper carry a two page article about superstitious beliefs of sports personalities. The colour of the shirt, the number they are given etc. cause them to fear or feel good.

I have already about Swami Vivekannada's encounter with ghosts. In one of the blogs, I dont know this or the other site where I am a member I wrote about a Madurai School headmaster suffering from ghost attacks (Pilli Sunyam). He invited the most famous Kerala (malayala) mantrikas and they couldn't help. When Sringeri Mahasannidhanam ( the previous pontiff) visited Madurai, he begged to him to cure this evil. Swamiji gave him a mantra to recite and all troubles vanished in thin air.

I am not saying that people do not have superstitions. But your dog howling symbolism should be explained. Have you heard digs howling in USA or London, have you ever wondered why?
Are they missing this omen you talk about?

I have nothing against swami's. But would you allow a wonderful wood carver to operate on your brain? A specialist in one field may not talk about something they know nothing about. We have our own guilt, and would not admit our failings, so we need an external even to blame. If you have absolute faith in God, and do your action to the best of your ability in the field of your specialization you can succeed. You do not need a dog, ant, or cat to perform. Their acts are independent of your results.

By quoting all these omens you are setting something else to blame for your failure. The swamiji giving mantra is "confidence" that he lacked. Mind over matter.

Dear Prasad ji,

Ghost attacks are not easy to handle.
Some Ghosts fear almost nothing.
The desires of these ghosts are very strong and they sometimes really bother others till they get what they want.

Even out here sometimes Mantrikas dare not handle certain types of Ghost.

People who are murdered or who commit suicide become ghosts --says the book on departed souls.
It was written by the Head of Madhurai Adheenam, Madurai, India. The previous head of Madurai Adheenam was great Saivaite scholar and wrote a book in Tamil IranthavarkaL Vazum Nilaiyum Pesum Muraiyum. It gives lot of factual information (anecdotes). Dr Banerjee, Professor of Parapschycology, Rajasthan University gives 600 cases of Rebirths.

My favorite topic.

But not everyone who is murdered become Ghosts.

It also depends on the nature of the person who is dead.

No doubt murder is a shock to a person and his/her mind might not even know they are dead(see Night Syamalan's movie Sixth Sense).
But after a while the person comes to terms with it and moves on.

It is only those who are earth bound and have strong desires that have a problem moving on even in normal death of old age.

That is the reason why we need to keep our desires under check while we are living.

I like the study of electromagnetic changes that take place when paranormal entities are around.

Watch lights flicker,TV changes channels, temperature drops and some might even feel nausea and vomiting feeling when a paranormal entity is around.

It is very strange sometimes when departed souls sometimes make contact with those who are not even related to them and do not contact their own loved ones to convey a message.

I feel as if these entities know who has the capability to sense their presence and hence appear to them in a lucid dream.

Sometimes I wonder how does the Astral world look like?

Do the entities there have a solid form in their own Loka and only appear Subtle in Bhu Loka ?

From birds' prediction, we have come to ghosts!

It is said that King Vikramaditya knew the language of birds. Birds use to talk
of some impending event .

About ghosts , souls wandering around till they rise upto their destination
depending upon their actions, and other such incidents have been exhaustively
dealt with in many books, both eastern and western. But we are still unable
to figure it out correctly.

We indians from a long time in the past have believed on bad omens. Whether current generation does not believe on these or question them. In mahabaratha when Draupadi is brought to the hall full of men and disrobed she seeks justice. When duryodhana heckles and calls draupadi a "vesi" vidhran admonishes him and tells him of impending war and his defeat, as though in response to his warning, a jackal howls, donkeys bray, and grisly birds shriek. The men in the assembly see in these omens portents of evil, and the blind Dhritarashtra. So there you have. BTW while on birds, can some one throw some light on the vanishing of the cute little sparrows that used to create a havoc with the chirrups.
