Small correction if you don't mind cos the spelling is a bit confusing..some might confuse Aishvaram in this line with Ishvara

ऐश्वरमं is aishvaram

Sathya Sai Baba has further elaborated on this stanza..

What a devotee should truly offer to God is the Patram (leaf) of the body,
Pushpam (flower of the mind), Phalam (fruit of the heart), and Toyam (sacred
water) of the tears of Bliss.

Thanks for a nice comparison.

There are dilemmas to such a metaphor.

1. If taken literally, It would be considered cannibalistic/zombistic these days, if any parts of the body is offered or tortured.
2. People can just claim they are true internally, and don't have to prove otherwise [like most bogus yoga/bhoga, tantra/mantra gurus like the 'actor turned leader']. Thus, the latter kind may escape from the real actions/responsibilities.

Lord Krishna is very simple but clever. In verse 9.26, He expects a real offering of a leaf or flower or fruit or little clean water, not for some benefits but with true devotion. So, He meant those things literally and they are not abstract or illusory. In the next verse 9.27, He was more precise in saying, every action you do and every offering do, must be made to Him, to escape good/bad karma. This again, translates to 'Every sense-organ must function in the interest of the Lord', thus what we see, hear, eat, speak of, do, think, that our heart yearns, must be related to Him. Period.

So, that metaphor may be translated to represent the abstract functions [not physical organs], like ' Offer the functions [leaf] of our body/karma-jnana indriyas , Offer the thoughts (flower) of the mind, Offer the bhakti/love/devotion and Offer one self/bliss, to know/seek/surrender to Him'. In verse 9.28. Krishna re-instated the YOGA of total Renunciation, 'sanyaasa-yOga-yukta-aatma'.

We also have similar concepts in our scriptures like 'Maanasika Araadhana', but that means
offering complete worship/pooja mentally, ONLY in situations where the real/physical worship is not feasible.

Ha Ha Ha...you sound just like my female cousin who once asked me why I never offer flower, fruit ,water or any Naivedyam when I pray and I said what Sathya Sai Baba explained and she said "Akka how to cut out my heart, cut my body and collect tears and the mind and place it on the altar?"

I was telling her not to take the meaning literally and she still didn't get it.

That was just a lol! But, nevertheless we have examples of Aghoris, and recent Zombies around the world. Never know, there are people to take literally. Just, don't leave room for people to speculate or explore.

So, do real pooja/offering, and do real renunciation through real qualities, no suspense ;)

Dear Mr.Govinda, could please let me know the vaishyas part here...are these traders? which class of people are called as such... any why they are specifically mentioned here by the lord.

Duties of Vaisyas are described in Verse 18.44 as
'कृषि गोरक्ष्य वाणिज्यं वैश्यकर्म स्वभावजम्'
- Agriculture, cattle-rearing and trade, according to their inherent nature.

In Verse 9.32, "By taking refuge in Me even men of evil birth, women, Vaishyas
and also Sudras attain the supreme state.
", Men of evil birth - may be those born to evil parents, butchers, live among criminals etc. Even those men, by taking refuge in Krishna, can be driven towards the right path. Similarly Women (due to their physical conditions and attaching responsibilities) and Vaisyas (due to their tiring/money-bound jobs) are exceptions to practising austerity and sAttvika natures, even those can attain supreme state of Vaikunta, with the sincere devotion to Lord Krishna. As per verse Verse 9.30. 9.31, all that is required from us is to accept our in-abilities and Surrender to Him with true devotion.

As a pre-cursor to this, in the earlier verse Verse 9.29, He clarifies that He is impartial to all creation :

"samO aham sarva-bhUtEshu na mE dhveshyO-asthi na priya: |
yE bhajanthi tu maam bhaktyA mayi tE tEshu ca api-aham:||

I am the same to all creation. There is none hateful or dear to Me.
But, those who worship Me
with devotion abide in Me and
I do abide in them
.

Wow, those original verses are already in logical order.

I have a question here...it is pretty clear in this verse that those who worship the Pitrs go to Pitr Loka..so is there really a need to do Shraddha for departed ancestors cos that is also still a form of worship.

Lord Krishna is quite clear here that to surrender unto Him and everything else will fall in place.

To the best of my knowledge the above verse only points out the limitations of worshiping minor gods and doing vedic karmas with the intention that it will confirm Moksha .
Later on Lord Krishna will say that Vedic Karmas are a means for purification and to maintain harmony in society ( refer Chapter 3 talking about exchange between Devatas and Yagnas performed by Humans to produce rain etc ) but one needs to not get struck in that and move towards Bhakti and Jnana for Moksha .
Once one gains spiritual maturity most of the external worship/ rituals comes down but still it is advised to continue them for the sake of Society as very few people are competent to understand the inner maturity of a spiritual person and will take his exterenal actions as proof of not doing any Vedic rituals . Even now the Shankaracharya's of Kanchi and Sringeri Mutt perform daily Chandramouliswera pujas and other rituals are followed in many spiritual Organizations even though they conduct classes on Bhagawad Gita and Upanishads .

Dear Renuka,

You kind of answered yourself in the second sentence.

He says, "Those who, with the same rites of worship, worship Me, Lord Vasudeva, as the Supreme Self, whose body is
constituted of gods, pitrs and bhUtas, are My worshippers and reach Me only".

All vedic yaganAs has hymns for all gods. Also, the SandhyA(Morning Sun), Gayatri Devi has hymns on them.
All these gods attained their positions through yoga/merits. They are more powerful than us, humans.
Thus, Salute them for their powers/boons.
As, their title and tenure are limited with the yugas, they are not shAsvatham/permanent, hence
worship their inner-self Lord Krishna, indestructible, Supreme Brahman/Self.

During ShrArdha, we dont worship the pitrs, instead we worship/pray their inner self, NarAyanA, for
their and our Yoga-KshemA.

Worshipping other gods as Supreme Source/Origin, Worshipping ancestors (like doing pooja for them,
keeping their picture/ statue in the altar) and worshipping the Spirits (yakshAs, rAkshasAs etc.) are criticised.]
There is no suggestion to stop any vedic rituals or salutations to other divinities or sAttvika acts
or nithya karmAs. Instead, we are advised to perform them, with the intention, that Vasudeva is the Seat of Origin,
abode of all beings/creation, and the receiver of all sacrifices and the grantor of all will and boons.
