hi JR,

i remember one story recently in my son's school....he is in middle school in USA...last month he got grade report.....he got

As and some Bs too.....in his class an american white gal got some Cs and Ds tooo...so her parents were upset and yelled at her..

she was upset in the class..she told her story to my son....then my son told her that MY PARENTS ARE VERY PROUD OF ME....

even though he got some B's ....we never yelled at him instead we got HAPPY MEAL FROM MCDONALDS.....so im not top

on my class in india...i was medium/average in my school.... in college i was OK....SO I GOT PH D ADMISSION in delhi

university.....so i dont beleive first rank in my life.....infact many first ranking students failed in their life....

Dear TBS ji,

Agree that when coming to practical life, many rank holders might still fail. However we should acknowledge that this is not because of them earning a rank before. The Rank was a distinction - a merit of sorts that made brows raise on their performance before - unfortunately they did not sustain the same in practical situation for some reason or other. However their accomplishment of having earned a rank before still counts... So I will see this as, "though they did not reflect the same behavior in their job or real-life performance, they atleast got to somewhere with their rank". So similarly I see that an atmosphere that promotes a healthy competitiveness is good for the performance of students.

Applicants must undergo a rigorous application process in which four tests (three tests with three subsections each, one large test) and an essay are administered. A combination of grades, recommendations, and test results determine the applicants' overall score. All applicants must have completed and passed at least Algebra I or equivalent, and are expected (but not necessarily required) to have completed Honors English, Earth Science and at least one year of a foreign language,[SUP][/SUP] although it is not uncommon for incoming students to take their 3rd or even 4th year of a language in their freshman year. On the other hand, many students begin language instruction in their freshman year. About 9% of applicants actually get into MLWGSGIS out of an average of 2000 applicants from all the participating localities, making the freshmen class usually around 180.
.......................
Students are required to take 4 years of a primary language, and 2 years of another to make up 6 total years of foreign language instruction. Five foreign languages are offered through a 4 year, 5 year, or AP level, including French, German, Spanish, Latin, and Chinese. Japanese, Ancient Greek, Italian, Russian, American Sign Language, and Arabic are taught in a two- or three-year sequence. Many students take courses that are two or three years ahead of their grade level. In order to provide adequate course offerings, the administration also offers a plethora of Dual Enrollment courses through Virginia Commonwealth University.

Believe me it is competitive.

I am sure there are many more of such competitive programs throughout the country. Many PIO children compete and get admission to such programs. In USA there are multiple avenues open for kids. The children here are not under the intense pressure. It is upto to the child to take on as much pressure they want. There is difference as the stress depends on the child's ability.

hi

i agreed....much more competetive.....

My first stint with sports started when I was aged 11..I liked high jump and wanted to try..but somehow I did not even qualify to participate cos I could not jump well but I kept trying.

One teacher told me "you cant jump...just face it"

Then I told her "give me 1 month..I will train myself and let me compete"

Then I trained myself daily in the hot blazing sun and within 1 month I was ready for competition and I won first place.

Then there was no stopping me and I started winning the 1st place every year till the age of 17 and even won at a state level.

At no stage I felt that I am competing with anyone..others did not matter..I wanted to give it my best shot.

So one can still win without the need to be competitive.

Thanks! How surprising! The feelings are "mutual"! (Not only that, I also find your "agenda" and your "friends circle" useless too... I too didn't mention this too.

I wouldn't speak about someone (and his job) when I know nothing about it! Its better again, "not to poke one's nose" into things they don't know anything about!

Hey JR, I dont care what you think! Just don't present your thoughts as gospel truth. And who I am friends with is none of your business.

Unfortunately thanks to your propaganda, I do know more about you than you about me. And what I see is not a pretty picture.

Where exactly did you reach with your competitiveness anyway?

Frankly speaking everyone one of us has a motivating factor to set our goals.

For me I am not at all competitive cos in my world only I exists.

But I have a motivating factor to set my goal and that is fashion!

It sounds weird that fashion is my motivating factor..the reason is I love to be trendy and be in sync with fashion and its no use looking hot but having zero brains.

So in order to be trendy and look good I made sure I studied hard and set my goals and I believe in seeking as much as knowledge as possible both Laukika and religious knowledge too.

My motto in life is "Look like a model but have brains of Einstein"

Hi Renuka JI –

Pl take my post in the right spirit !!

for a lot of people, the competitive spirit is not required as they have decent jobs & they are happy to get by in life except for the super ambitious. The problem starts when the economy goes down or the company they are working for lays off people.

Once one is out of a job in later years, or the business does not do well, there is no way to recover if one does not have the competitive spirit – go getter attitude to come back to work again.

So lets not “generalize” based on “limited – one person example” !!

Cheers,

Dear JK,

I do not drink..so no 'spirits'!LOL

Jaykay ..from what I have noted competitiveness is grossly misunderstood.

Most people who claim to have a competitive spirit are downright jealous of others and want to stand out at any cost and at times even paint a bad image of another just to project themselves as the best of the best when they know that they are technically only killing themselves "mentally"

These are the types who eventually think of suicide.
Believe me I have seen many types of people like this.

I have even seen a patient many years ago who was so competitive that he could not even have sex with his bride cos he felt what if his performance is not up to the mark!LOL

Then he told me that in life he wants to always be on top..so I told him that what was his problem here cos he will most of the while be on top in a physical relationship!

I had to give him counselling to make him relax and understand that when he is with his wife no one is giving him marks for sex and he is not in the porn industry to worry about performance.

After a couple of consultations he was fine and became a father of many kids!

He thanked me lots for my advice.

Now Jaykay...what you are saying in your post is being hardworking..working smart and working right.

That is our duty to do our work right and not to slack.

I run my own business..I know how ups and downs of business is all about.

Competitiveness only takes you for a short distance but in the long run equiposed in all situations is what takes us thru life.

When I was in college there used to a student who was extremely competitive.

During exams she would be asking papers non stop to write her answers when it was just less than 5 mins.

One day she told me that she did that asking papers on purpose to make the rest of us good students scared that she knew all answers and needed more paper when she actually only just started.

She told me "you are a good student yourself so if you see me asking papers you might panic that I know more than you and forget some of your work and I can score higher than you"

I found it amusing and started to laugh..I told her "its our individual knowledge being tested here..may be the best man win"

Get what I mean? It was an exam and instead of concentrating on her exam she was trying to bring down others.

This attitude does not take anyone anywhere.

Most so called competitive individuals are so hell bent of bringing others down that they do not realize they slide down the scale of life too.

All these talk about competitive spirit can be made into a movie where 2 females compete with each other for the same man.

They go to any extent to get the man of their dreams and fight tooth and nail and claws and fangs to get him.

He enjoys the attention and encourages both to fight for him cos he loves to be pursued.

It gives him a high that he is so needed and so wanted.

Finally both these females fight with each other and fall off a building and die.

They both go to hell and meet the guy there too.

The ask him "how did you die?"

He replies "I died of HIV becos my partner never told me he was infected..sorry gals I never told you both that I am gay"

Moral of the story :Females! Before competing for any male make sure he is not gay.

I'm honored I painted the right picture about me - a toiling, honest person!

Thanks Sri Praveen.

I would like a clarification. There is a veiled personal attack on members or a almost a vilification. An example is here :

Union Minister and BJP MP from Nawada in Bihar, Giriraj Singh, on Wednesday made a controversial comment on Congress president Sonia Gandhi's "skin colour."
Making the controversial comment in Hajipur, near Patna, Mr. Singh asked, had Rajiv Gandhi married a 'Nigerian woman' and she was not of 'white skin', would the Congress party accepted her as a leader?

Giriraj Singh's 'white skin' comment on Sonia sparks controversy - The Hindu

I suppose many in this site would support Giriraj's racial comment (secretly) and not even accept that they are racist.

I have used the bold font to draw your kind attention to this line. We find a lot of freely thrown innuendos. Does that not qualify as a personal attack? If it falls within the ambit of personal attack, how is it to be dealt with?

Thanks !

Dear Shri Praveen,

Thank you for the intervention. I apologize for posting my personal info. From my previous message, I therefore will edit and remove my personal info.

Thank you.

I have read that thread and from where i stand, it is a regular conversation message. I do not see how it can be seen as a veiled attack.

To all and not just to you:-

This is a common occurence here. Why do you have to think that one member is sending a message to another member through this.
Do not think too much on them. Read them as regular discussion text. More you think = more it seems a personal attack, because you think (and maybe) want it so.

If you think such is the case, the best and the proper way is to get in touch with that member and talk it out. If it does not make progress, then you can report the post. But NEVER counter it with a message of yours. It just sets off a chain reaction.

Australia children

i can't talk about America children but can about my (Australian) children.
i have always told them if you are doing some thing, then why not do your best? As long as they have given it their best shot, we can all be happy. So, I ask them to compete with themselves - do your best or don't bother doing it at all.
Coming from a prestigious educational institution in India, I have also pointed out that some may perform better than anyone and you will have to learn to accept (appreciate) and learn from them. No need to feel a failure just because you come 20th in one off the best medical schools ( or a premier engineering or business school) in the world. Patients do not ask for your mark / rank before you can operate on them :) there is enough space for everyone to make a successful living and do not have to cut each other.

ps:
you can succeed in in life just by cruising in Australia or USA. You will feel better if you give it your best shot!

Well said! You can add India to the list especially for the New Age Services!!
