there is an interesting news item in todays HT. french conservative party chief Joseph Daul says improved access to porn movies across europes many borders isone of the merits of the european union.he has offered freer movement across borders to watch porn as convincing argument for young voters in EU elections scheduled on may 5th
He says when he was young ,he could not freely go to kohl in germany across the border to see porn movies due to customs delays and forgetting to get deutsch marks for seeing the movies.. he could reach cinema houses only after the movies were over. he says ,if youngsters are explained this way, they understand what european union means. lol

Wow!

A multiple wow . this is most convincing statement that porn has nothing to do with crime and is a basic requirement of the young and the old.no political party in india has included that in their manifesto. If they had ,they would have swept the polls . no one would have talked about caste ,religion at all.

Porn on the Mind

By Ingrid Wickelgren | August 3, 2011 |

If you like to surf porn on the Internet, you’ve got company. In a 2008 survey of college students, 90 percent of males and 60 percent of females had been there, done that. The practice is only half as common among people in their 40s, but still hardly rare, and the habits of youth are better predictors of what’s to come. No longer is there any real risk of exposure when you want to take a peek at a racy photo or video. Sitting at your computer is just about as private as you can get. So a lot of people figure, “Why not?”
Via Wikimedia Commons

Maybe because this porn watching is perturbing male minds, engendering sexist, even misogynist attitudes toward women? Maybe its use portends a rise in violence against us, the weaker sex?

A new report (The Sunny Side of Smut) in the current issue of Scientific American Mind by Melinda Wenner says nah, let the guys (and gals) have their porn. Sure, porn gives a lot of us bad vibes. At best, it is in bad taste and worse, flatly immoral. But engaging in a tasteless, sleazy diversion is different from doing something dangerous. In fact, it’s very difficult to find backing for the argument that porn is harmful. And there is at least as much data to support the contention that porn might be doing its fans—and even the rest of society—a bit of good. (Hear me chat about this on the radio.)

First of all, the guys who watch mainstream porn seem to be just normal guys—not total creeps—which, given that porn watching seems pretty darn common, does not surprise me. But to give the research its due: in a 2007 survey of 650 young men, scientists found that users of mainstream, nonviolent pornography were neither more nor less sexually satisfied than nonusers. Both groups felt the same degree of intimacy in their relationships and had similar sexual experiences.

The men with a penchant for violent or fetishist porn did have a few quirks: they masturbated more frequently, had more sexual partners in their lives, and were not as close to their partners as the average, non-porn-watching male (whoever that is). But, of course, people do vary in these characteristics in ways that are not necessarily pathological or bad. Other studies Mind columnists described in a previous article (Sex in Bits and Bytes) have shown that men who view a lot of violent porn are more likely to display sexually belligerent behaviors such as holding a woman down against her will. But think about it. Guys who like to view violence tend to be more violent. Not sure what the porn had to do with it.

My take: a lot of things happen to males during their development to shape their brains one way or the other, to be nice guys or jerks. By the time they start watching porn, their habits are more likely to reflect who they are than to shape their personalities in any significant way.

But Wenner’s story goes beyond saying porn is safe. It suggests that it might actually be beneficial. I am not sure I buy this, but some coincidences worth mentioning back up this view. First, as access to Internet pornography grew in this country, rates of rapes and sexual assault went in the opposite direction. Those stats are at their lowest levels since the 1960s. And something similar happened in Japan, China and Denmark. Along those lines, the U.S. states in which rapes rose by 53 percent had the least Internet access between 1980 and 2000—and so the least access to Internet porn. States with the most access saw a 27 percent drop in reported rapes. These opposing trends don’t prove anything. It could be that they are unrelated to each other or that a third factor underlies both. But it makes you wonder.

If porn somehow reduces rape, why would that be? Wenner suggests that pornography may be a safe outlet for deviance. Exposure to it correlates with lower levels of sexual repression, experts say. And people seeking treatment in clinics for sex offenders commonly say that it helps them keep their abnormal sexuality in their minds. Otherwise, maybe these folks, and others, might have been contributing to those rape stats. I don’t really know, but that’s the idea.

Relationship-wise, watching porn could have drawbacks. Guys, if you overindulge and advertise it, you are unlikely to score points with your wife or girlfriend. In a study of female partners of heavy porn users, 42 percent said it made them feel insecure; 39 percent said it had a negative impact on their relationship and 32 percent said it negatively affected their lovemaking.

On the other hand, maybe more of us gals should see what it’s like. Peeking at porn is probably not going to make us violent toward our partners, after all. Maybe we’d get it (and be one with the guys). Maybe we’d be grossed out. Maybe both. In any event, it might spark ideas. And those can be good for a relationship.

it is a very interesting post.
it totally negates the the thinking of indian judges and general perception of pornography which is seen as abnormal associated with violent behaviour and rapes.
western thought and society has come to terms with it . but india is unable to accept this as a normal phenomenon. and still most see it on the sly and would not like to talk about it.
I am unable to accept that it can be good for any relationship . certain preferances such as porn are best left private to the individual who is best equipped to come to terms with it.
.

.

That depends on the MOU(Memorandum of Understanding) between the partners...if partners are consenting than it can be taken as an educational tool.

Our Movies are now a days worse than porn movies..the standards are getting relaxed...if they are blue films ours are red or green films...(IN THE GARB OF REALISTIC MOVIES)

Dear Vaithehi,

Glad to know that you ave compared and contrasted watching porn and watching commercial movies..its good to have exposure to every type of movie so that we can guide our kids about movies and its ratings. It takes quite a lot of mental stamina and a good attention span to be able to sit thru porn and come to a good comparison.I admire you for that. Its nice to know you are opening up and sharing your thoughts with us.

But if we see Tamil movies of the yesteryears..there was actually more physical contact with hero and heroines..old movies show lots of close contact of holding face..hugging..extra emphasis on 1st night scenes.. even though their dressing were decent...but even then the build up is there which can ignite the imagination of the viewers.

These days the hero and heroine just hug and kiss for a short while and then they break into a song and the heroine is scantily dressed that's all...but over all the physical contact is less.
Its more of a visual delight with less imagination when dress is scanty and the emotional build up is also less.

But overall commercial movies have not reach the XX rating yet..its still boy loves girl..boy and girl run around tree..then item number comes in for a scene..then fight scene and the movie ends when villain dies.

Art movies tend to be a little bit more explicit and I am not too fond of art movies cos the story line is often too slow moving and actors/actress do not look good.

I like to see movies where actors/actress look great.

indian laws are dicey . you know many times some unscrupulous lawyers convert consensual relationship cases into rape and women can frame men. men can be shut up in jail under sec 498A without bail.when relationship sours ,man gets badly hurt as laws are one sided
similarly ,watching porn even with consent, man can easily be sent to jail. man can be framed under head of forcing unnatural relationship sections . if the woman desires . no MOU helps. when such things happen , it would be good lesson learnt by man. lol

So its safer to watch with a lawfully wedded spouse..less problems..less hassle!LOL

With the banning of pan sites, as renu correctly told ban old movie songs in which heroine would do all lustful acts and hero would do all atrocious acts which was embarrassing for a family to sit and watch with a young girl or boy...as rightly told by her now a days those objectionable close ups have reduced to a certain extent due to educated youths acting in movies...still more than porn movies and songs are the main culprit..that does not mean that less sinful acts or things which are done hidden can be permitted but there will not be any law which can actually/meaningfully stop them from occurring. Therefore in my humble opinion , it is better to ban all close up scenes of man and woman and scantily glad scenes of man and woman so that young minds will not get this much spoiled. if possible magazines and books which put "KILU KILU " Kadai" or centre spreads and attractive covers (Mostly females or female stars).

Vaithehi,

Centre spreads?? Wow this is getting better!LOL

When I was a student in India there used to be this magazine called Debonair..it was actually a women's magazine with centre folds of the Digambara kind.

I wonder if Debonair magazine is still in sale in India? Is is still on sale??

The first time I saw it I was shocked cos it was sold openly in book shops..railway stations, newspaper stands...that is the time I totally fell in love with India..I was wow..India is great..it has freedom.

That is why I am wondering why now India wants to curb freedom of expression of any kind.

What say you Vaithehi??

what makes you think that legally wedded wife cannot send men to jail . as per law , any such complaint for action for rape or unnatural relationship can be filed by spouse also .In fact whenever a man files for divorce , spouse uses 498A to jail the man to teach him a lession. this is the most common way recommended by lawyers to get even with husband

Why would any good wife want to send her husband to jail?

Isn't it Kallanalum Kanavan Pornanalum Purushan?

You have made a universal statement. May not be true. Remember the fellow who got Bobbitized? Poor fellow. LOL

Have you forgotten?? We are eastern women with eastern values....we do not and will not hurt any man like that...we have a heart to at least give them general anesthesia before performing any Bobbitization.

porn watching has become a way of life. our legislators in karnataka were watching porn instead of participating in useless debates
so why blame doctors alone
we are a closed society
kadavai thirangal . katru varattum . these problems will go away .

similarly prohobition. if there is easy access , illegal hooch deaths will go away.
we have to be sensible .we have to keep pace with the times. a wave of liberalism is sweeping india . we do not come to terms with it we will be swept away and we will become discards .

our children will despise us and keep a distance . they will have multiple personalities. one which we shall see . the other they relish and follow .what is your take on it?

This is where we need to get our priorities right..dont be stupid enough to watch porn while at work!

One should know not to jeopardize their duty.

Yesterday I was at the gym and I saw how so many people are addicted to replying messages on their smart phones even while lifting weights!

One guy was lifting weights in one hand and replying a message with other hand!LOL

I was thinking "what an idiot..the moment the mind is engaged to reply a message..the muscle engagement in the hand lifting weights goes down and one is not going to get a proper work out..another woman was using the exercise bike and each time I saw her reply her messages you could make out her pedaling became less intense..so these creatures are never going to get any proper workout done"

So in life we should learn how to prioritize according to the situation.

BTW what does one get by watching porn at work..you cant even fully concentrate on your work or even enjoy porn to the max.

So work and play should not mix.

It may be way of life for some or may be routine also for some. It seems you miss the point. A duty bound Doctor cannot ignore an ailing patient for the sake of his own pleasure. A sensible person knows pretty well as to which one is more important, either serving the patient or watching porn in rest room. He could have done while he was ‘off duty’ cos it is his personal right. This news item is cited only as a sample case. While the news conveys about the present day’s possible dangers of watching porn while one is on duty, you are preaching about our children discarding us at a later date….!!!

if society were open , people had better access , doctors would not be watching porn during work hours and legislators will legislate instead of seeing porn on the sly at work place . many youngsters would also like free access .I was only pointing the dangers of denial and advantages of freer society .

any professional - doctor, politician, judge, teacher - who is doing or watching and wasting time on anything not relevantly connected with his work during working hours - must be pulled up.
