Why is our Hindu / Indian tradition under constant attack

With dissociation of tamil brahmins from social issues in tamilnadu, It is devoid of brahmin think tanks which can push the cause of tamil culture and other issues

affecting tamils. The decimation of tamil eelam activists with india turning passive after arming them first was a betrayal of sorts . Agreements on katchtheevu ignoring

livelihoood of our fishermen is again a ill conceived action.Repeatedly the interests of the state are subordinated making tamils feel alienated.

Now yielding to youth power on jallikattu is not going to resolve the basic alienation.

It will return in another form .

Unless economic prosperity is ushered in guaranteeing employment along education , restive youth will take to the streets again.

Next time they may not be non violent

In social media as well as on the streets, passion almost always trumps over reason. But within the space afforded by a newspaper column one can at least try to redress the balance. So let me say first of all that there are reasonable grounds to oppose a ban on Jallikattu. One can seek to conduct the practice in moderation, and within parameters that minimize animal or human suffering.

That said, the extreme claims made on behalf of the agitation are untenable. It was certainly not an uprising of the Tamil people. It was active only in a few districts, and here, too, dominated by men, often of particular castes. Dalit intellectuals had spoken out against Jallikattu, since the practice tied Dalits down to the rearing of animals, closing down their avenues to a dignified livelihood. And as some Tamil feminists pertinently asked, why were there no such ‘mass protests’ against the widespread attacks on women?

Untenable, too, is the attempt make Jallikattu a signifier of the authentic or true Tamil identity. Surely aesthestically-minded Tamils should be far prouder of their great heritage of art, architecture, literature and music. Surely socially conscious Tamils should and would be prouder of the great traditions of progressive social reform represented by, among others, Iyothee Thass and Periyar. In a state still rife with caste and gender discrimination, a state reeling under the impact of a severe drought, did this defence of an archaic and sometimes oppressive practice merit such massive and disproportionate attention, so much passion and energy?

Nationalism allied with emotion can make people do strange and sometimes stupid things. There is certainly a case for continuing Jallikattu in a modified form. Animal rights fundamentalists are often wrong, and even the Supreme Court can occasionally be mistaken. But the manner in which the Jallikattu protests are being furthered and represented does the Tamil people no justice. To reduce Tamil identity to Jallikattu is as farcical and tragic as the ongoing attempt to reduce Indian identity to the worship of the flag.

Beating up Wife and children, or Kicking the dog after a drunken bout may be "venting out" the machismo. Should it be allowed?

If the same guys are not allowed to torture the bulls will kill Human beings so they should be allowed this inhumane practice? The same argument was promoted to kill all whales in the ocean. Till the world body intervened to save them. The Indian Tigers would disappear, except a world body thought of Save the Tiger project. Some times in the name of Culture, ignorant people destroy their own environment. Like setting uncontrolled fires in the woods, has to be regulated.

A practice is acceptable if it averts something more undesirable compared to the one it allows. We have to accept that all humans are not enlightened or possess the sagacity of Shri.Prasad to think and act with clarity. Some are by nature violent and would in some way display that violence. A practice that channelizes the violence into something less undesirable for society is welcome. That is the logic I think by which nature functions. Can we shed tears because a lion kills a deer? It is in the nature of lion to kill a deer.

Avert something that is a greater harm and it is the logic by which a culture is generally shaped.

Shri Prasad, your example of husband beating a wife is misplaced.

Tamil nadu was in the bottom of the heap 5 decades back when Congress was in power..But now in 2016, among the big States it is at No 2, next only to Maharashtra..TN has made rapid strides in manufacturing & services...The current Arab spring movement had support from well educated folks...If TN is getting support from the Center on an issue involving regional pride why should another such moment arise...I guess such movements are possible only in BIMARU states which are lying at the bottom of ranking (Bihar, UP, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa etc)

Today I happened to meet a young TN based IAS officer in his late 30's..Incidentally he is a Tambra ..He is from TN cadre, brilliant & very vocal in communication...After interacting with him, my confidence on TN reaching higher heights has gone up several notches

Tamilnadu is being mostly lead by IAS officers who are a handpicked dedicated lot..JJ was wise enough to bank on them for all welfare measures.

Similarly the politicians she promoted are basically those without base of their own living off her charisma. The state cabinet ministers were brought in and thrown out as

she fancied. Now they are orphans. In course of time they might drift to other dravidian parties or bjp might tempt some to join them.Power will keep them together

for sometime. After two years or so political changes will take place.

Two people were killed and 83 others injured during Jallikattu event in Pudukottai district on Sunday as the bull-taming sport was held in the absence of government representatives at a few places across Tamil Nadu.
Protesters, however, forced the cancellation of a Jallikattu event that chief minister O Panneerselvam was supposed to inaugurate.
The government initially considered moving the event from the original venue – Alanganallur in Madurai – to Kovilpatti in Dindigul, but was forced to withdraw its plans completely after protesters made an appearance there too.
The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the Jallikattu ordinance promulgated by the government, dubbing it as a “stop-gap arrangement” that’s vulnerable to legal scrutiny. They demanded a more permanent solution to ensure that Jallikattu was held without any hassles year after year.
Panneerselvam decided to return to Chennai after protesters prevented him from entering the venue. Before leaving Madurai, he told mediapersons that Jallikattu will be held in Alanganallur only if the residents want it. The assembly will pass the relevant legislation for amending the law on Monday, he added.
“It is a permanent solution, but now it is up to the protesters and people of Alanganallur to hold the event,” the chief minister said.
However, Jallikattu events were held at Pudukottai, Tiruchirapalli and even Puducherry.
Sunday’s developments came as a setback to the AIADMK government, which was keen to appropriate credit for “winning the Jallikattu battle” by forcing the Centre to pass an ordinance to this effect. Even local BJP leaders like Union minister Pon Radhakrishan were quick to take credit for the ordinance, professing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s love for Tamil traditions and culture.

Was it worth the victory?

IMHO it is worth the victory.

Unless states fight to be heard ,they are likely to be ignored.

India is a big country with multiplicity of issues.

A confrontation like this forces the powers that be to find a solution -though adhoc it might be.

A working relationship with the centre and neighbouring states will aid tamilnadu to resolve outstanding issues.

Courts are no solution to every issue.

Who unleashed the police on the jallikattu protestors on seventh day?

It will remain a subject for speculation with no ready answers.

They have tried to bottle a genie which had come out of the bottle.

This will boomerang.

Now youth power is one more power to reckon with in tamilnadu.

The missing link or point is : The invasion by "interested elements" on the basic culture/ belief/ custom/ tradition of Indians is under strain for a long time... This started with 1976 famous Kessinger Project. Only in the past couple of years, majority of the "MAJORITY" opening up their eyes - all these days, everything get brushed aside under a HUGE CARPET which Indira Gandhi manufactured in 1976 called "SECULARISM" - the original Constitution which was discussed/ debated over 6-7 years didn't have SECULARISM in preamble but it was pushed in arbitrarily during EMERGENCY into the constitution. Same is the case the word "SOCIALISM". Someone talked about sabarimala women entry. Its a wrong belief that women "as a class" is prohibited entry - except for the 41 days restriction (that too for a age group), women has entry to the mountain and there is no age restriction except this period. This issue went through a full bout in Kerala High Court long time back & under the constitution, it was concluded "this practice is not discriminatory in nature". Interestingly, supreme court is hearing the matter not on APPEAL from this Kerala High Court judgement.. And Hali Ali "restricted women"' all of a sudden in 2011 - and the trust couldn't come out with solid/ valid argument for this change - interestingly, only country where government own/ operate religious place & call themselves SECULAR NATION...
