Ntv News: South Indian actress Sharada got NTR Film Award - Sharada Special Interview

She originally hails from Andhra Pradesh. She has achieved success through Malayalam movies. Initially she did many supporting roles in Telugu films and later on moved to Malayalam film industry and gained success there. She is also known as Urvasi Sharada because earlier the National Film Award for Best Actress was officially designated the Urvasi Award. Sharada has been selected for the prestigious NTR National Award instituted by the Andhra Pradesh state government for the year 2010.

Sharada was born Saraswati Devi in Tenali, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her parents Venkateswar Rao and Satyavathi Devi belonged to a family of agriculturalists. She has a brother, named Mohan Rao. Sharada was sent to Madras in her childhood to live with her grandmother Kanakamma. Sharada describes her grandmother as a strict disciplinarian who in the later days wouldn’t even let the heroes touch her and allowed rehearsals only on Sundays.

Sharada started to learn dance when she was six. She used to perform during Dasara and other temple festivals. It was because of her mother's desire that she learned dance. Her mother wanted her to become a big star in cine field. Though Sharada's father was not too interested in the idea, he didn't stop her.

Sharada married Chalam, a famous Telugu hero, producer and comedian. He was her co-star in her debut film Tandrulu Kodukulu. They divorced later on.

When she grew up, she started acting in theatre, under the supervision of her grandmother. In Indian theatre and cinema, the female lead stars used to leave the field as soon as they are married. So, most of the female lead stars were very young compared to the male leads. Sharada remembers in one of the plays she acted as the wife of a person 30 years older than she was when she was just 13. Her debut in films was with a minor role in the Telugu film Kanyasulkam. However, she returned to theatre after it and did a major role in the Telugu version of Rakta Kanneeru, a Tamil drama. The play went to get staged over 100 times in Tamil Nadu.

In 1959, she began her career as Sharada. The change in name was attributed to the presence of a few other actors in the industry with the name Saraswati. She came under contract to L.V. Prasad, a Telugu producer. Though she didn't get to act in any of his films, she got her formal training in acting under him, including the Navarasa lessons. She largely attributes her performances and growth in the field to this training. Her first break came with the Akkineni Nageswara Rao starrer Iddaru Mitrulu, which was a major hit. Noted for the role in the film, she got chances from Tamil and Malayalam films as well.

The year 1965 changed her career as Sharada carved her niche for herself in the Malayalam film industry with her performances in Shakuntala, Murappennu, Udhyogastha by P. Venu, Kattu Thulasi and Inapravukal. After that, she focused in Malayalam films, acting only a few roles in other languages.

Recognition came in 1967 in the form of a national honorary award for her performances in various films of 1966 including Iruttinte Athmavu. The award was the predecessor to the National Film Award for Best Actress, which was instituted in 1968. In 1969, she won her first National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Thulabharam. She went on to win the award 2 more times, for Swayamvaram (1972, Malayalam) and Nimajjanam (1978, Telugu). She also won the Kerala State Film Awards for Best Actress one time.

Later she saw success in Telugu films in protagonist roles. She was so popular that she did lead roles in films starring most of the successful heroes of Telugu film industry. Post 1993, she became choosy and did only a few films. Her major films off late were Mazhathullikkilukkam (2002, Malayalam), Rappakal (2005, Malayalam), Nayika (2011, Malayalam) and Stalin (2006, Telugu).

She owns a chocolate factory named Lotus Chocolates. She was elected as Member of Parliament on Telugu Desam Party ticket from her native town of Tenali.

Tributes to Palghat T S MANI IYER (12 June 1912–1981) one of the leading Mridangists in the field of Carnatic Music, on his Birth Anniversary today. and the first mridangist to win the Sangeetha Kalanidhi and Padmabhushan Awards of the Government of India.

5+Palghat+Mani+Iyer+2012.jpg

He was born and raised in the old Kalpathy village of Palakkad, Kerala. He first studied with Palghat Subba Iyer, Kalpathy Viswanatha Iyer and later with Thanjavur Vaidyanatha Iyer. Mani Iyer came into prominence after accompanying Chembai Vaidanatha Bagavathar in a music concert at Madras (now called Chennai).

Mani Iyer accompanied all the leading vocal artists of his era. He was also the guru for later mridangam players such as Late Palghat R. Raghu, Late Mavelikkara Velukkutty Nair, Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Kamalakar Rao, Palghat Suresh, and Anand Subramaniam. He also taught mridangam to children at the Rishi Valley School started by Jiddu Krishnamurti.

Before Mani Iyer’s arrival in the music scene, the two mridangists Alaganambi Pillai and Dakshinamurthy Pillai (who played the kanjira also), dominated the art of percussion playing.

The innovations of Mani Iyer changed the style of mridangam playing from just keeping beat for the main artist's music to being an instrument in its own right. A comment from Y. G. Doraisamy: "It was Mani Iyer who started the now prevalent trend of the mridangam, not just keeping the time with tekkas and moras, but actively accompanying the musical phrasing, so as to be a rhythmic running commentary, reproducing on the drum all the subtleties and rhythmic complexities of the musical composition."

Palghat R. Raghu, a disciple of Mani Iyer, describes his guru as a genius in that he showed music followers the manner of blending with the music of the main artist in handling the kritis of every conceivable mood and tempo. By his consistent excellence he could raise the concert to thrilling heights. He also took his arangetram at age of 8
He was the father of the noted carnatic musician Mrs Lalitha Sivakumar and was the grandfather of the noted singer Nithyasree Mahadevan.

Tributes to Alangudi RAMACHANDRAN (22 June 1912-15 June 1975)

Tributes to Alangudi RAMACHANDRAN (22 June 1912-15 June 1975)

Tributes to Alangudi RAMACHANDRAN (22 June 1912-15 June 1975) exponent of GHATAM, the Carnatic Classical Music percussion instrument, on his Death Anniversary today.

If today, ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram is synonymous with the ghatam, there was a time such giants as Tiruvilvamalai Vilvadri Iyer and Umayalpuram Kodandarama Iyer added lustre to the magic mudpot of Carnatic music. Alangudi Ramachandran was one such exponent of the ghatam, someone who made significant changes to its practice. K Ramachandran was born on 22 June 1912 at Koduntarapalli, Kerala and passed away on 15 June 1975. Learning the art of percussion and ghatam playing from Kuttalam Kuppuswami Pillai, Kuttalam Sivavadivelu Pillai and Needamangalam Meenakshisundaram Pillai, Ramachandran first ascended the performance stage as an accompanist of Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar. Even as a child, Ramachandran had unusual interest in music, percussion in particular, and after his father Krishna Iyer settled down at Alangudi, often walked a few miles to listen to radio concerts at Terezhundur town. Fascinated by the tavil prowess of Meenakshisundaram Pillai, he took up a job in a restaurant at Needamangalam to facilitate his joining him as a student. It was Pillai who persuaded him to take to the ghatam. Ramachandran later took lessons from mridanga vidwan Mayavaram Kuppuswami Pillai.

Big-made Ramachandran had the right physique, potbelly and all, for the effective demonstrative style of ghatam playing. Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar was very fond of him; he would not hesitate to add him as an unscheduled second ghatam artiste to his cutcheri ensemble. A believer in meaningful collaboration on stage, he underplayed his role if he thought it necessary for the success of a concert. Known for his precision fingering, “the sound of his fingers would resemble hitting with steel, that too on a Manamadurai ghatam” (Centenarians 2012, Chennai Fine Arts). Eventhough he used a very heavy ghatam, he invariably tossed it up for dramatic effect in concerts and composed special korvais for the act, according to mridanga vidwan TV Gopalakrishnan, a friend, colleague and admirer.

Among Ramachandran’s happy accomplishments was his longish stint as an accompanist of MS Subbulakshmi and popular musicians KB Sundarambal and MK Tyagaraja Bhagavatar. He had the rare blessing of dying in harness, immediately after his tani avartanam for a DK Jayaraman concert at Shanmukhananda Sabha, Bombay.

A highly talented dancer . Kamala Laxman entered films at a very young age of four . She danced her way from Tamil movies into Hindi films . Her style was near perfect , something rare in films and footwork and speed incomparable . But her histrionics were limited . That's why her presence got limited to dance numbers . Her three numbers in the film Konjum Salangai ,left an undeliable effect on the audience . It was pure dance and the adavus in every number were unique and unrepetitive .)
Wishing KAMALA LAKSHMAN or Kumari Kamala (born 16 June 1934) Indian Dancer and Actress, on her Birthday today. Initially featured as a child dancer, Kamala appeared in almost 100 Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada films throughout her career. In the 1970s, she became a teacher of the Vazhuvoor style of dance in which she specialises.

She was born into a Brahmin family in Mayuram, India. Her sisters Radha and Vasanti are also dancers. At an early age Kamala began taking lessons in the Kathak dance style from Lachhu Maharaj in Bombay.

She also took lessons in Hindustani classical music from Shankar Rao Vyas. She was discovered at age four by Tamil film director A.N. Kalyanasundaram Iyer when he attended a dance recital. He cast her in small roles in his films Valibar Sangam (1938) and Ramanama Mahimai (1939) where she was billed as Baby Kamala. Her dancing was noticed by other Filmmakers and she moved to Hindi films with Kismet and Ram Rajya in 1943.

Kamala's mother moved to Madras so her daughter could train under the Bharatanatyam teachers Kattumannarkoil Muthukumara Pillai and Vazhavoor Ramiah Pillai. Kamala's first role in a successful Tamil film came in 1944 with Jagathalaprathapan where she performed the Paampu attam. Kamala played a double role in her next film Sri Valli (1945) and also played Krishna in the film Meera. However, it was her film Nam Iruvar that would make an impact on Tamil cinema. Nam Iruvar was full of patriotism and Gandhian songs, and its dances helped to revitalize and legitimize Bharatanatyam. The film is credited with sparking a "cultural revolution" throughout the Tamil speaking areas of India.

In 1953, Kamala was invited to perform for Queen Elizabeth II during her coronation festivities. In the late 1950s she toured internationally, performing in China and Japan. In 1970, the government of India awarded her the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award. She also taught dance for two terms at Colgate University after being awarded its Branta Professorship in 1975. In 1980, Kamala moved to New York permanently and began teaching classical dance. She established a dance school in Long Island, Shri Bharatha Kamalalaya. In 2010 she received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts for her contributions to the arts.

She was married to cartoonist R. K. Laxman, but the marriage ended in a divorce in 1960. Her second husband, T. V. Lakshminarayanan, died in 1983. She has one son from her second marriage, Jainand Narayan, an officer in the United States Army.

Tributes to R K SHEKHAR, full name Rajagopala Kula Shekhara (21 June 1933 - 30 September 1976)

220px-R._K._Shekhar.jpg

Indian Music Composer, who worked mainly for Malayalam Movies, on his Birth Anniversary today.. He composed music for 52 films (23 in Malayalam with 127 songs), and was the Music Conductor for more than 100 films. He is best known as the father of music composer A. R. Rahman.

His debut song as a Music Director was "Chotta Muthal Chudala Vare" ("from cradle to grave") which was a big hit in Kerala. This was composed for the film Pazhassi Raja (1964).

He was born to Rajagopala Bhagavathar, a harikatha exponent, in a Sengunthar family in Tiruvallur. His entry into film music was opened through his extra ordinary performances on harmonium for Theatre Plays. He started his career in film industry as an assistant to music director M. B. Sreenivasan. Later on he conducted, arranged music for famous Malayalam Music directors G. Devarajan, M.K. Arjunan and V. Dakshinamoorthy. He was so much fascinated by the tunes created by these legends, that he would work very hard single-handedly to create the BGM of the songs they tuned to match its purity and standard thus making the song evergreen on par.Their association lasted till his death.

His career as an independent music composer started with the 1964 film Pazhassi Raja of which the philosophical song Chotta muthal chudala vare became a big hit. After his next work in Aisha, he turned back to arranging and conducting for other composers.

After a gap of 7 years, he returned to music composing through the film Anaathashilpangal in 1971. He composed music for Taxi Car by P. Venu in 1972. Then he went on to compose music for about 20 films. Due to the failure of these films in the box office, his songs went unnoticed and he lacked to get more opportunities for composing. His close friend in the industry was composer M. K. Arjunan. Starting from Arjunan master's first film, Shekhar assisted him in all his films till his death. Continuous hard work made Shekhars health condition worst. In all these days, Arjunan master was the care taker of him and his family.

He composed tunes for his last film, Chottanikkara Amma when he was on bed for treatment and he died leaving the project incomplete. Later on M.K.Arjunan completed the project by arranging and recording the songs that Shekhar composed.

R. K. Shekhar was married to Kasthuri (Known as Kareema Begum after conversion to Islam). Their marriage took place in the most prominent shrine in India, the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple located in Tirupathi, Andhra Pradesh in Southern India. Shekhar & Kasthuri had four children, A. R. Reihana, A. R. Rahman, Fathima Rafiq and Ishrath Qadri. Shekhar died at the age of 43.

Tributes to Chittoor SUBRAMANIAM PILLAI (22 June 1898 – 1975) eminent Carnatic Music Vocalist on his Birth Anniversary today.

Chittoor Subramanyam was born to Perayya and Mogilamma, on 22 June 1898 in a village near Punganur in Palamaner taluk, Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh. His parents first taught him carnatic music and he later became disciple of Nayana Pillai of Kancheepuram. Under Nayana Pillai's tutelage, Subramanyam learnt and honed his skills by doing Gurukula seva to his Guru (teacher/master) for more than two decades.

From the age of five, Subramnayam was performing Harikathas (musical renditions of mythology) and music performances. He completed his training with Pillai when he was aged 20 and at that time began his major performances.

Chittoor Subramanyam settled in Madras but performed throughout India during a career lasting over 50 years.

He was well known for his repertoire of Thyagaraja Keerthanas (compositions) and mastery of Laya (rhythm). He had his own style called 'Kancheepuram School'. He was popular in Swaraprasthanam and Kalapramanam, noted for singing very rare keerthanas of Thyagaraja, Muthuswamy Dikshitar and other composers.

At a time when recording technology was in its infancy, his two discs for Columbia Records, which contained his own compositions such as Madhura nagarilo Challanamma bonu, Kulamulona golladana and Mavallagadamma - demonstrated his originality as a composer and lyricist.

He realised the need to spread the art and taught disciples through the Gurukulam tradition. Many of Chittoor Subramanyam's disciples became well-known carnatic musicians. These include Madurai Somasundaram, Bombay S Ramachandran, Chittoor Ramachandran, T. T. Seetha, Tadepalli Lokanatha Sarma and Revathy Ratnaswamy. He started the Saint Thyagaraja Utsavam in Tirupathi and awarded the title of Sapthagiri Sangeetha Vidwanmani to deserving exponents of carnatic music.

While in Tirupathi, he composed music for a number of kirthanas of Saint Annamacharya. Noted among them are – 'Ithadokade', 'Narayanathe'

Recognised as an ambassador for Carnatic music, he died in 1975. To commemorate his Birth Centenary, the annual Subramanya Sangeetha Kalakshetra was established and a three day festival of music was held at Hyderabad.

He was Head of the Music Department at Annamalai University and was connected with the music boards and committees of various other universities in South India as well as state and central government bodies.

Among his official positions were
