Smt M.S.Subbulakshmi & Smt Radha Viswanathan were invited to render the invocation on the eve of the inaugration of the 6th Afro-Asian Congress of Ophthalmology, held in Madras, on 04th January, 1976. Since the delegates to the conference were from different nations, this invocation was rendered in 5 languages - Sanskrit, Arabic, Japanese, English & Tamil - with extracts from the Quran, the Bible and other sacred texts. The last section in Tamil is on Kannappa Nayanar, a great devotee of Lord Shiva, who removed his own eyes, when he saw the Lord feign eye-sore. We at Paramparaa1916 are very glad indeed to share this very rare recording with all our subscribers and followers.

Tributes to Madurai MANI IYER(October 25, 1912 – June 8, 1968)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEM97nN4D8g

Madurai Mani Iyer (Tamil: மதுரை மணி ஐயர்) (October 25, 1912 – June 8, 1968) was a Carnatic music singer, who was famous for his unique style. He was one of the most highly celebrated carnatic vocalists during the first half of the 20th century. He was renowned for his adept skills at singing kalpana swarams, neraval, and raga alapana.

Madurai Mani Iyer, whose original name was Subramanian, was born to M. S. Ramaswamy Iyer and Subbulakshmi in Madurai on October 25, 1912. His father, a Sub-court Clerk, was the brother of the famous Vidwan Pushpavanam, who was a great classical musician himself.

He received many awards like The Ganakaladharar in 1944, Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1959, President's award in 1960, Isai Perarignar in 1962 and many more came his way.

Madurai Mani Iyer was indeed passionate about music but he had other interests too and one of them was the English language. Though a school drop out, Mani Iyer mastered this language and an anecdote goes that he would trudge from his house in Mylapore all the way to the Connemara Library to pick up books in the Queen's language. He loved Bernard Shaw and was a fan of Charlie Chaplin

Tributes to Suchindram Shri S P SIVASUBRAMANIAM (12 September 1917-8 June 2003)

Tributes to Suchindram Shri S P SIVASUBRAMANIAM (12 September 1917-8 June 2003)

SPS-rs.jpg

Tributes to Suchindram Shri S P SIVASUBRAMANIAM (12 September 1917-8 June 2003) a multi talented Carnatic Musician on his Death Anniversary today. Born in Vagaikulam in the Tirunelveli District, he was introduced to the world of Carnatic Classical Music by his mother Smt Valliammal, an ardent music lover.

Initially, Sivasubramaniam did not undergo any formal training, but came up solely through his sheer talent and passion for music. He rapidly imbibed the nuances of Carnatic music just by listening to recordings and concerts of the great musicians of the time. Soon, the family moved to the temple town Suchindram, where Sivasubramaniam became a musician of repute.

On one occasion, Sivasubramaniam was approached by a gentleman requesting him to teach music to his son. He then decided that he should first undergo formal training himself, so he approached Shri Arunachala Annavi, a great musician and composer from a nearby town called Boothappandi in the Kanyakumari District, and requested him to teach him. Within a few years, Sivasubramaniam had grown immensely in his musical knowledge and abilities, and also became a well-known teacher in his own right.

With his robust style, extensive repertoire, and creative flair, Sivasubramaniam became a regular performer in the district. His concerts were featured on All India Radio, and he performed extensively in South India and Sri Lanka. He was noted for his incredible grasp of rhythm and his ability to adapt to any situation. A multi-faceted genius, he could play the violin, veena (Indian lute), harmonium, mrdangam (a percussion instrument), and even the piano. In fact, he took to the violin as his main instrument after suffering problems with his voice, and became a highly sought-after violin accompanist for many great musicians. His unbridled creativity took him even to the realm of instrument workmanship; he could build instruments of the finest quality, and had once repaired a violin that had been shattered into several pieces. He also used his skills to craft elegant cases for his instruments.

A gifted composer, Sivasubramaniam’s many masterpieces in Tamil touch the hearts of countless people around the world. Apart from his compositions in praise of various deities, he also wrote very inspiring and moving pieces on social issues and patriotic themes. In addition, he wrote the songs for many Harikathas (musical discourses that relate stories from Hindu culture). His wife, Smt R Sornambal, became a renowned Harikatha exponent through his tutelage, and they would perform together, with him accompanying her on the harmonium or violin. He had also composed the music for many Tamil plays.

Sivasubramaniam’s compositions brimmed with brilliance; an independent and creative thinker, he incorporated unique features and ideas into his compositions. A beautiful example is the charanam of his composition ‘Ananda Tandavam’ in the raga Vachaspati from the Harikatha ‘Karaikkal Ammaiyar Charitram’, featuring swaraksharas (wherein the sol-fa note and the syllables of the lyrics are one and the same) commencing with middle-octave ‘ga’ (3rd note) and moving step-by-step to the upper-octave ‘pa’ (5th), and using this poetic feature in his narration of Karaikkal Ammaiyar approaching Lord Shiva dancing upside-down! Another composition in the raga Kalyani features all the six yatis (the basic patterns of music, such as expansion, contraction, even progression, etc.). In short, Sivasubramaniam was a great composer who could visualise a situation clearly and respond with a creative masterpiece with absolute ease.

Sivasubramaniam was deeply devoted to the Lord Murugan (Subrahmanya). He was very fond of the Murugan temple situated atop the Velimalai mountain, and often spent his time sitting near the sanctum of the temple and composing songs. A much sought-after teacher, he ran an institution called ‘Sarasvati Gana Vidyalayam’, where he taught music to many children, many of whom now teach in various musical colleges and institutes.

He passed away on the 8th of June, 2003, and left behind a rich musical legacy through his family and students.

Tributes to PADMINI (12 June 1932 - 24 September 2006) Indian Actress

Tributes to PADMINI (12 June 1932 - 24 September 2006) Indian Actress

Tributes to PADMINI (12 June 1932 - 24 September 2006) Indian Actress and trained Bharathanatyam Dancer, who acted in over 250 Indian Films, on her Birth anniversary today. She acted in the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi language films. Padmini, with her elder sister Lalitha and her younger sister Ragini, were called the "Travancore Sisters".

Padmini was born and raised in Thiruvananthapuram in what was then the princely state of Travancore (now the Indian state of Kerala). She was the second daughter of SreeThankappan Pillai and Saraswathi Amma both comes from noble Nair families. Her sisters, Lalitha and Ragini, were also well known film actresses. Together, the three were known as the Travancore sisters. Padmini and her sisters learnt Bharathanatyam from Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalingam Pillai.

The trio were the disciples of Indian dancer Guru Gopinath. They learnt Kathakali and Kerala Natanam styles of dancing from him. N.S. Krishnan noticed her talents while she was presenting Parijatha Pushpapaharanam in Thiruvananthapuram. After that performance, he said that in the future she would become an actress. She was thus cast as heroine in his own production Manamagal.

The Travancore Sisters grew up in a joint family tharavadu 'Malaya Cottage' in Poojappura, Trivandrum. The matriarchial head of the family was Karthiyayini Amma whose husband was PK Pillai (Palakunnathu Krishna Pillai of Cherthala) alias 'Penang Padmanabha Pillai'. PK Pillai had six sons of whom Satyapalan Nair (Baby) was a leading producer of many early Malayalam films. Another son, Raveendran Nair's daughter Latika Suresh, is a leading producer of Malayalam TV programs. They performed at the 1955 Filmfare Awards.

At the age of 14, Padmini was cast as the dancer in the Hindi film Kalpana (1948), launching her career. She acted in films for nearly 30 years.

Padmini starred with several of the most well-known actors in Indian film, including Sivaji Ganesan, M. G. Ramachandran, N. T. Rama Rao, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Sathyan, Prem Nazir, Rajkumar, Gemini Ganesan and S. S. Rajendran. She appeared with Sivaji Ganesan in 59 films.

She acted mostly in Tamil films. Ezhai Padum Padu released in 1950 was her first film in Tamil. Her association with Sivaji Ganesan started with Panam in 1952. Some of her noted Tamil films include Thanga Padhumai, Anbu, Kaattu Roja, Thillana Mohanambal, Vietnam Veedu, Edhir Paradhathu, Mangayar Thilakam and Poove Poochudava. Some of her popular Malayalam films include Prasanna, Snehaseema, Vivaahitha, Adhyaapika, Kumara Sambhavam, Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu, Vasthuhara and Dolar.

In two of her popular Hindi films — Mera Naam Joker and Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai — she was paired with Raj Kapoor. She did another film with Raj Kapoor Aashiq (1962). Her other Hindi films include Payal (1957), Afsana (1966), Vaasna (1968), Chanda Aur Bijli (1969) and Babubhai Mistry's Mahabharat (1965). In Mera Naam Joker she played very bold role of a girl who used to dress like a boy till accidentally her real sex is noticed by the hero of the film Raj Kapoor. The film had hot scenes involving Padmini.

Her most famous was Thillana Mohanambal, a Tamil film, where she plays a dancer competing against a musician to see whose skills are better. She also acted in a Indian-Soviet film Journey Beyond Three Seas (Hindi version: Pardesi) based on the travelogues of Russian traveler Afanasy Nikitin (called A Journey Beyond the Three Seas, which is now considered a Russian literary monument), in which she plays the role of Lakshmi, a royal dancer.

Both Padmini and Vyjayanthimala, trained classical dancers, vied with each other. They were at the height of their careers and there was professional rivalry between them! Interestingly, the real-life envy did creep into the reel-life dance drama which added its own sugar and spice to the impact of the sequence.

After her marriage to Ramachandran, a U.S.-based physician in 1961, she retired temporarily from films and focused on family life and refining her classical dance. She settled in the United States and in 1977 opened her classical dance school in New Jersey, the Padmini School of Fine Arts. Today, her school is considered as one of the largest Indian classical dance institutions in America.

Actress Sukumari is the trio's maternal first cousin. Shobana, the famous dancer, is the niece of Padmini. Malayalam actress Ambika Sukumaran is her relative. Actors Vineeth and Krishna are relatives.
Padmini died of a heart attack at the Chennai Apollo Hospital on 24 September 2006. She is survived by a son, who is settled in the United States.

Padmini was well known for her professional rivalry with actress Vyjayanthimala, the successful dancer-actress. They performed a dance number in the Tamil film Vanjikottai Valiban; the well known song was "Kannum Kannum Kalanthu" which was sung by P. Leela and Jikki. In the song they were pitted against each other. Due to their professional rivalry the song has a cult following since the film was released; the popularity of the song surpasses the popularity of the film.
