Zomato Founder Had The Best Response For Customer Who Complained About A Muslim Delivery

The hate and bigotry that we usually see on social media against minorities seems to now have spilled on to real life. And not for the first time. With the political climate in the country fanning communal fires, people seem to have problems with even interacting with certain communities.

A Twitter user @NaMo_SARKAAR on Wednesday took to Twitter to tell food delivery app Zomato that he was cancelling an order because the delivery person was a “Muslim fellow.”

This is not the first time such an incident has taken place. In April 2018, a man from VHP had cancelled an Ola cab because the driver was Muslim, saying he did not want to give his money to “jihadi people”. Twitter had outraged over this incident asking Ola to block this user’s account.

Ola had responded saying, “Ola, like our country, is a secular platform, and we don’t discriminate our driver partners or customers basis their caste, religion, gender or creed. We urge all our customers and driver partners to treat each other with respect at all times.”

In June 2018, a woman on Twitter had told an Airtel customer service executive that she had no faith in the service provided by him because he was Muslim and had requested for a Hindu representative.

“We absolutely do not differentiate between customers, employees and partners on the basis of caste or religion. We would urge you to do the same,” Bharti Airtel had said in a response to her.

Whether one likes it or not,the least paying jobs like courier ,food delivery etc calling for no skill than driving a

two wheelor are taken up by muslim youth . They work long hours with minimal compensation.

Companies which project that they do not discriminate on basis of religion employ them as it is most cost

effective. They hide behind a facade of non discrimination against minority religion.Utterly hypocritical.

This post is about discrimination and insult on an individual, let us not change the conversation.
If the company is exploiting poor people please write a separate post.

"I am hurt, but what can I do... we are poor people," said the Muslim delivery executive from food aggregator Zomato who is a key character in the raging debate on social media over bigotry.

Faiyaz, a food delivery executive with Zomato, was assigned the task of completing an order placed by Amit Shukla, a resident of Jabalpur.

Food delivery app Zomato won hearts all over the social media with its reply after a man cancelled his order because the delivery person was a non-Hindu. Reports said Amit Shukla from Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh took to social media to express his dissatisfaction after he learned that the rider is non-Hindu. Shukla demanded his order to be cancelled or allocated the new rider to deliver food. The food delivery app responded quickly and tweeted they can’t change rider and can’t refund on cancellation.

Decency and rationality are still alive in India in general with some exceptions.

Food has no religion selectively!

Ujjain: Madrasas refuse mid-day meals from ‘Hindu’ organisations

Ujjain Madrasa: Parents of Muslim students believe the trust used to offer the food to Hindu gods before sending them to schools!

They are against Prasad - the hindu practice
of offering the food to hindu gods first & then distributing to devotees as Prasad !

Apples and oranges.
If you are opposed to doing business with say a Muslim restaurant it is your choice.
But if the organization that you ordered food from uses a Muslim or a widow you do not have the right to tell the organization who they can hire.

The Durga moorties and decorations for the Gods are made by Muslim craftsmen, would you say that Hindus should stop worshipping?

You can educate an Ignorant as long as they accept their ignorance, but alas.

Would you refuse to accept money because it touched a Muslim hand?

If you have Islamophobia, you may want to migrate to Antarctica or the moon. Unless all Muslims are eliminated from the world, you have to find a way to coexist.

There are people who prefer only food marked halaal.
Megabites can be wasted writing about halaal and about how the chanting of a few words from some holy book can make the killing involved a non-violent one. But the fact remains that some people who think their load of sin gets less going for halaal food prefer to order for only halaal foods.

Same way someone who thought he nwould prefer to get his food handled by only some specific people ordered and expressed his preference. There is no need to make a holier than thou case out of this quoting secular values. For all that the man who ordered the controversial food delivery may have friends who are from various other religions and may be sipping his tea in their company. It is just his preference and he stated that. It is his right. If the supplier can not meet the demand the business transaction does not take place. Someone else may fill the gap and deliver as needed.

But in an atmosphere every one is competin g with everyone else to get branded a secularist, no wonder the matter has become talk of the media.

It is a mad mad world.

Zomato has been quick to encash on this episode (I hope it was not stage-managed) and made a good publicity for itself, from where it all started by some individual refusing to accept food brought by a muslim. So many individuals in different households have funny stereotypes and biases. Zoamato found this a good opportunity to promote itself unmindful of a controversy being created.

Again some people do not understand the basis of "freedom of choice" and "Free speech".

Yes, you have the right to free speech, but you do not have the right to shout "Fire" in a crowded theater and cause panic and chaos.

Similarly one has the freedom to choose your friend, associates, and business, but you do not have the right to deny the same freedom to others.
Dr. Kalam was the President of India, even a staunch Hindutva person can not say that he/she would not accept the president's orders because he was a Muslim.

In a democracy, you can choose your food. But you can’t insist that an enterprise discriminate against a delivery man/woman on the basis of his/her religion just because many people, even a majority, sees such discrimination as kosher.

The incident brings to mind another incident last year. A man cancelled his request for an Ola cab because the driver happened to be a Muslim. It became an issue because not only did he cancel his request, he publicly stated that he cancelled the cab because he did not want to give money to “jihadi people”. According to media reports, he flaunted a screenshot of the cancellation, which showed the driver’s name — Masood Alam.

This is not exercising choice. This is bigotry masquerading as freedom of choice. This is signalling that discrimination is good, great and glorious if it is used against groups you don’t like for whatever reason.

Discrimination is not new in India. But if we talk about a “New India”, we need to speak up, and in a new language, in our private and public lives, when we are face to face with bigots, including educated ones, who legitimise the highly prejudicial idea of purity and pollution.

It is this bigotry and prejudice which lies at the heart of many customs, mores and personal habits which are inherently discriminatory. Speaking up also means asking uncomfortable questions like why do so many urban, educated households choose to insist on an “upper caste” cook and think that persons who are from supposedly “lower castes” are best hired for sweeping and swabbing?

Amit Shukla, the man in the Zomato story, says he believes that in the month of Sawan, one should “eat pure and clean food”. Clearly, in his mind, “pure and clean food” can only be served by specific groups of people.
What does it say of New India or its flagship cleanliness mission when people conflate cleanliness with discrimination on grounds of religion? Mr Shukla’s action should be seen as illegal, because it is effectively a case of untouchability.

I know some people admit that they are bigots when it comes to religion or sexual preference, but it must be condemned by all rational people in India.

Ironic twist of fate for a so called party that claims to be flag bearer of Hinduism, to send india on the path of such Adharmam ! The descent into madness is complete with individuals getting radicalised by non stop hatred against Muslims, and Christians via social media groups.

The fiberals have to be either absolutely clueless or lying through their teeth. Muslims accept only halal meat - which by definition has to involve a muslim offering a dedication while the animal is killed. Why is that not a bigotry but a shukla requesting hindu driver is? Either both are bigotry or both are not. The fiberals will not answer this simple question - instead go on their usual rant.

Sometime back these fiberals rejoiced when a driver refused to board a uber car because it had hanuman sticker on it. That was not bigotry for them. But if another person reject a driver with a beard, that is bigotry. Fiberals are becoming a laughing stock everywhere.

What part of that statement is not clear to this non-fiberal, or unsocial thing (it is inhuman).

Shukla is no different a bigot than any person who insists on halal food however may one spin it. That is the point.

Even if one approaches the problem from the enterprise side, the enterprise does discriminate based on religion when it comes to sourcing the meat. Then how can the same enterprise later claim that it does not discriminate based on religion. What the enterprise says is that it will discriminate based on religion when it suits them.

Neither the enterprise nor the fiberals who support it can take the moral high ground here.

Its utter childish to be fighting over who brings our food!
I have even eaten food given to me by a monkey!
When I was young my house was right on top of a hill surrounded by a jungle and lots of monkeys used to come to my house for food...we used to feed them.

Then whenever I walked down the hill some of the friendly monkeys knew Athiti Devo Bhava and when I was entering their domain they used to pluck fruits from the jungle and throw for me to catch.

Some fruits were not edible cos it was jungle fruits but some like wild rambutans were edible and I used to take it home to eat it.

The monkeys knew that when they came to my house they were fed so they fed me when I enter their domain.

I guess Zomato should hire monkeys to deliver food to these idiotic humans who make a big deal who brings what food.

For every action, there is equal and opposite reaction. Face it.

Renukaji,
Just FYI - the protest in #17 was engineered by our fringe elements, as a revenge for zomato correctly calling out the right wing bigot who refused delivery by a Muslim. So not to let the opportunity pass, they engineered a fake protest against pork and beef delivery!!

It would be Hilarious if not so twisted !!

For every action, there is equal and opposite reaction. Face it.

Chandru Ji,
The problem is it is an "unequal" fight and that's what we are worried about.
The right wing has organised itself into a massive political force with multiple sub groups, while the minorities are a very small disorganised team.
And this unequal fight has descended into mobocracy !!

This is like a small group of mexicans trying to fight the White groups in USA.

It will be interesting to see if zomato sacks these employees and teaches a lesson!!

The strike is because of the sentiments of Hindus on Cow and Moslems on Pig - Don't trivialize sentiment! The sepoy mutiny or the first freedom struggle started in Meerut was based on these sentiment - To teach them a lesson is not a liberal national thinking - but a colonial legacy! The.Enfield Riffle misfires!

Zomato Gets A Reality Check From Its Own Staff
If delivery boys were hailed as victims of Hindu bigotry in the earlier instance, they are now becoming villains, assuming one uses Goyal’s statement to judge them by. In north Howrah, West Bengal, Zomato delivery boys are refusing to carry food items that include beef and pork.
