A 51-year-old woman in Uttara Kannada district is being called 'Lady Bhagiratha' after she single-handedly dug a well and yielded water.
Gouri S Naik of Ganesh Nagar, Sirsi, wanted a readily available source of water to feed her coconut and areca plants, but she did not have enough money to build a well. So the bold lady took it upon herself and started digging. After 3 months of toiling hard, she succeeded in getting water.
Everyday, she would dig for 5-6 hours, delving four feet into the ground. Only in the last leg of digging the well did she take the help of three other women to lift out the dirt. Now, she has a 60-foot deep well, with 7 feet of water in it.
Gouri, a mother of one, is a daily-wager and works as a labourer in Ganesh Nagar. She has also grown around 150 areca, 15 coconut and some banana trees around her home.
