Why Tamil Brahmins Successful In life?

Status

Have you wondered why this small community has prospered and done well for itself?

It is despite being in a minority in terms of numbers in their own state.

That is according to some is because of certain characteristics.

1. The community is fairly networked and well knit to be close among themselves keeping others out. They are proud about their culture.

This isolation is its strength. They are very particular that their girls do not marry outside the community. They get concerned when such things happen.

They feel it will break their network.

2.TBs are very sensitive about their standing in their own society of brahmins around. They tell their children to concentrate on education to outdo other

brahmin kids. They tell the children to be sensitive about money and make them value money . That makes them good in certain professions like finance.

3.Being in a minority, there are clear that they should not confront the majority and stay out of trouble. when other groups fight each other , they keep away

from it with a muted response. Most TB tell their children not to pick up a fight over any issue. They know to survive confrontation is not an option

Being small in numbers, they have the option to go elsewhere to the north or west in india or abroad for better pasture. Most have done that.

4..TBs are not active in politics of their own state. They realise they do not matter. Yet they are able to do much better in life than political active bengali

brahmin for example

5. Wherever they go TBs based on their education and work become wealthy communities , retaining as much of their culture in alien lands and civilisation.

What do you think?

1. Tamil brahmins feel that they are an elite group. And hence anybody who marries outside the caste dilutes the elitism. Hence the need to keep the flock within the fold.

2. Affluent TBs generally care two hoots about the economically backward TBs. Money is a strong yardstick to measure the elitism of TBs (nowadays).

3. True. This is so ingrained in the psyche that most generally turn into cowards. Their only aggression would be expressed in the form of domestic violence.

4. True. This is because of a feeling of isolation - both from the state and from the society.

5. Partly true to an extent. Inside India and wherever it is conducive they try to retain the original traditions provided sufficient strength of numbers exist. Otherwise they would be happy to accommodate a mixed bag of traditions provided the managing committee is dominated by brahmins (as in the UAE). Strict TB tradition is not followed. It becomes a satsang.

What do you think?

This is more of a vanity and bragging type!

1. Networking is the least among the community when we rate Marwari, Banias, Gujarathis, Punjabis, Kayasths..The author seems to live in a dream world and building castles in air...We do not want to think beyond our own family these days..In fact we have to network with other Tamil communities for success

2. True

3.We are seen as cowards by the rest of society ..In any case does anyone care for what society thinks?

4. This is related to 3....If we change our attitude & develop fearlessness we will be successful in politics too....Admire the Bengali Brahmin for his networking skills and fearlessness!!

5. TB's retaining culture in alien lands is no comparison to what Bengali Brahmin or Gujarathi Brahmin achieve...We are a far cry! Again this is more an utopian dream
