Wholesale onion price soars 70% in a month

Wholesale onion price at Lasalgoan in Maharashtra, Asia's biggest market for this kitchen staple, has shot up by 70 per cent in just about a month -- hitting its highest level for the month of July in the past two decades.

Prices in July usually tend to be higher because the supply goes down and the onset of monsoon season also affects the onion quality.

The onion was being sold at Rs 25.50 per kg in Lasalgoan market today, while the retail prices are in the range of Rs 35-40 per kg here in the national capital. Lasalgoan accounts for a bulk of the supply in various parts of the country, including Delhi region.

The prices have shot up by 70 per cent since June 27 when the government increased the minimum export price (MEP) for the commodity. Spiralling prices could further fuel the food inflation in the coming weeks.

As per the data maintained by the Nasik-based National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF), the average price at Lasalgaon stood at Rs 15 per kg last month.

A sharp increase is being seen in the retail markets in most parts of the country.The prices in both wholesale and retail markets have been rising in recent weeks due to sluggish supply of good quality onion in the wake of the crop getting damaged in storage across major growing states, including Maharashtra.

Most poor in north , who cannot afford vegetables for curry consume rotis with raw onion and green chillies and salt.

so it directly hits the poorest.

no govt has a right to stay if even onions cannot be provided at reasonable cost to the poor.

most politicians know their fate if onion prices go up.

There is no use of blaming the Governments alone for every thing. Now after the arrival of Super Market chains the prices are controlled by Vegetable/fruit brokers who rule the market. Prices of Onion and Potato fluctuate every year due to hoarding by cartels. Also market prices ruled by demand and supply.Thanks to the IT industry and migrants from all States of India, almost all fields in and around Bangalore which I have seen producing fresh Vegetables and fruits ten/fifteen years ago are now hosting multi-storied Concrete jungles.

I do not know how exactly cartels operate in hiking up prices of Onions and whether they can be really controlled but there is a lot of wastage due to lack of proper storage facility and if we improve our storage facilities and also improve the means of transportation of these essential commodities , then definitely the prices of some of these essential commodities can be kept in check even when there is a shortage of produce due to poor agriculture season .

I do not know how exactly cartels operate in hiking up prices of Onions and whether they can be really controlled but there is a lot of wastage due to lack of proper storage facility and if we improve our storage facilities and also improve the means of transportation of these essential commodities , then definitely the prices of some of these essential commodities can be kept in check even when there is a shortage of produce due to poor agriculture season .

That is why we need some of the distribution technology from others.

We waste so much of food..We make more than what is required be it in hotels, family functions and in office canteens..All this contributes to inflation of vegetables and pulses

With retail price of onion crossing Rs 50 per kg, the Centre on Monday said it is in the process of importing 10,000 tonnes of onions and asked states to crack down on hoarders to ensure adequate supplies in the market.
"We have taken several measures to check prices of onion in the last few weeks. We have tendered for import of 10,000 tonnes of onions, which will help increase supplies in the market," Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan told reporters here.

When onion prices are below the break-even level prices for the producers, they shift to cultivate some other commercial crop. When the onion prices sore up, many agriculturist again return to onion cultivation. The factors like...Rain, over- moisture, hoarding by merchants,etc. also play a havoc. The cyclic activity continues from age old days.

It is expected that it will cross Rs. 100/- per kg. in a short time.

While the wholesale price has tripled in the last one month, the retail price of the crop has doubled with a huge rise of 33% happening in just the last four days.
In the APMC wholesale market of Vashi, the price has risen from Rs 16-17 per kg in the first week of July to Rs 60 – 62 per kg now. Earlier this month it was Rs 35-38 per kg. Just four days back the price was Rs 45-50 per kg.
“Usually around 125-130 vehicles carrying onions come to the market every day. The arrivals at present are however around 80-90 vehicles,” said Ashok Karpe, a wholesaler.
He further said, “40 tonnes of onion from Egypt has arrived at JNPT port but it will make little difference. First it will take a week for clearance from the port and there is no idea of its quality either. Besides there is no crop left in Maharashtra and so there is going to be huge shortage locally.”
