I could not find literal meaning of the word "Pillai". It is a sir name of Saiva Vellala Community in South India, who are considered high caste. In Southern Travancore, Nairs call themselves as Pillai.

Brahmanyan.

" Pillai " Community in Old Tirunelveli Dist, (inclusive of the present Tuticorin Dist also) Pillais are very famous.
They are very high Orthodox Shaivaits.
" Tirunelveli Then Indhiya Saiva Siddandha Noor Pathippu Kazagam " is still run by Pillais.
Many Mutts like Thiruvaduthurai Aatheenams,Kundrakkudi Aadhinams, Madurai aadhinams are all Pillais Dominated Aadhinams.
Even there are many more Aadhinams..belonging to Pillais.
The Word ," Saiva Pillai" means Sons of Lord Shiva.
