[h=1]WATCH: Huge flash and loud boom lights up the sky as asteroid explodes above UK[/h]A HUGE flash of light spotted above the UK has sparked fears of an asteroid hitting the Earth.


Hundreds of people took to social media to report a bright flash seen in the sky above northern Scotland.
CCTV footage of the phenomenon was captured by Facebook user Wayne McDonald.
Witnesses above the Highlands and Aberdeenshire said they had seen an explosion – but it was not accompanied by thunder.

Speculation is rife on Twitter, with witnesses suggesting it may have been a meteorite or a sonic boom.
The footage has been viewed tens of thousands of times already.
Police said they had received reports of bright flashing lights.

He said: "I was standing in my upstairs room on the phone, blethering away and the next thing there was this big flash. It was a fair size, and a light, greeny colour.
"I phoned the police. They said they had received numerous reports of it.
"It was almost due south from where I am in Westhill. This thing was massive - but there was no sound."
